According to Su Xin, I would like to share the 9 types of constitutions in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM):
Balanced Type, Qi Deficiency Type, Yin Deficiency Type, Yang Deficiency Type, Damp-Heat Type, Qi Stagnation Type, Phlegm-Damp Type, Blood Stasis Type, and Special Constitution.
Each type has different characteristics, allowing individuals to infer their own constitution. Once you know your constitution, shouldn’t you also know how to nourish it? Today, let’s take a look at the third type: Yin Deficiency Type.
If you do not belong to the Yin Deficiency Type, please read on, as your family and friends may need this information. If you are a yoga teacher, it is even more important for you to understand this, as your students will benefit.
Common Characteristics
Yin Deficiency Constitution
First manifestation: Insufficient nutrients (Yin fluids) in the body, leading to a decline in nourishing functions and presenting “dryness” characteristics.
For example: dizziness, weight loss, dry and wrinkled hair and skin, dull complexion, or the appearance of many pigment spots, dry mouth, dry and painful throat, or chronic dry cough, dry eyes, rapid decline in vision, sore lower back and legs, tinnitus, forgetfulness, scanty urination, constipation, dry red tongue with little coating, or even a smooth tongue without coating, or recurrent oral ulcers.
Second manifestation: Symptoms of deficiency heat and hyperfunction.
This is due to the accelerated metabolism in Yin Deficiency, increased oxygen consumption and heat production, resulting in a state of continuous hyperactivity..
For example: after exertion, palms and soles feel hot, low-grade fever in the afternoon or evening, easy facial flushing, irritability, fatigue but difficulty falling asleep, excessive sweating during sleep, palpitations, and a rapid pulse; men may experience increased libido or frequent nocturnal emissions, while women may have increased menstrual flow. Laboratory tests indicate typical hyperfunction of the adrenal cortex in Yin Deficiency constitution, reduced immune function, low estrogen levels in middle-aged women, decreased bone density, and increased blood viscosity.
Overall characteristics: Deficiency of Yin fluids, primarily manifested as dryness of the mouth and throat, and heat in the palms and soles.
Physical Characteristics: Generally thin.
Common manifestations: Heat in the palms and soles, dry mouth and throat, slightly dry nose, preference for cold drinks, dry stools, red tongue with little moisture, and a thin rapid pulse.
Psychological Characteristics: Impulsive temperament, extroverted, active, and lively.
Tendency to Illness: Prone to deficiency fatigue, sperm loss, insomnia, etc.; susceptible to heat-induced illnesses.
Adaptability to External Environment: Tolerates winter but not summer; sensitive to heat, hot, and dry conditions.
Nourishing Principles
Supplement Yin and clear heat, nourish the liver and kidneys; for those with Yin Deficiency constitution, the key is to supplement Yin. Among the five organs, the liver stores blood, and the kidneys store essence, both residing in the lower jiao, thus nourishing the liver and kidneys is essential.
Nourishing Methods:
Dietary Nourishment: Should preserve Yin and subdue Yang, favoring light foods, avoiding fatty, rich, and spicy items; it is advisable to consume more sesame, glutinous rice, honey, dairy products, sugarcane, and fish, while minimizing consumption of pungent foods like scallions, ginger, garlic, leeks, chives, and peppers.
Herbal Treatment: For lung Yin deficiency, it is advisable to take Bai He Guo Jin Tang (Lily Bulb Decoction); for heart Yin deficiency, it is advisable to take Gu Fang Bu Xin Wan (Ancient Formula Heart-Supplementing Pill); for kidney Yin deficiency, it is advisable to take Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill); for liver Yin deficiency, it is advisable to take Yi Guan Jian (Linking Decoction); other herbs that nourish Yin and generate fluids such as Nu Zhen Zi (Ligustrum fruit), Shan Zhu Yu (Cornus fruit), and Han Lian Cao (Eclipta) can also be selected.
Mental Nourishment: Individuals with this constitution tend to be irritable and easily angered, which is due to the excess fire from Yin deficiency disturbing the spirit. Therefore, one should follow the principles of “tranquility and emptiness” and “guarding the spirit within” as stated in the Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine). In daily work, avoid arguing over non-principled issues to reduce anger, and participate less in competitive entertainment activities.
Environmental Adaptation: Individuals of this type are often thin, and thin people tend to have excess fire, often experiencing heat in the palms and soles, dry mouth and throat, sensitivity to heat, and a preference for coolness. They are prone to colds in winter and discomfort in summer heat, so they should take care to avoid heat during hot summer months.
Exercise and Health Maintenance: It is advisable to engage in moderate-intensity exercises such as Yin Yoga and Tai Chi. Control sweating and replenish fluids in a timely manner. Avoid high-intensity and high-volume exercises, and refrain from exercising in hot summer or humid environments.
Acupoint Health Maintenance:
Selected Points: Tai Xi (Tai Xi) and San Yin Jiao (San Yin Jiao).
Location: Tai Xi is located on the inner side of the foot, behind the inner ankle, in the depression between the tip of the inner ankle and the Achilles tendon; San Yin Jiao is located on the inner side of the lower leg, 3 inches above the tip of the inner ankle, behind the medial border of the tibia.
Method: Use finger kneading (see Balanced Constitution), pressing each acupoint for 2-3 minutes, once or twice a day.
Dear practitioners, if you have a Qi Deficiency constitution, take good care of yourself, and I believe you will achieve a balanced state.
Every soul is precious, and every body should be cherished.
