What is Yin Deficiency?
To determine if you belong to the category of Yin deficiency, one of the most obvious examination methods is to check for heat. If you often feel heat in your heart area, prefer to touch cooler objects with your hands and feet, and like to keep your limbs outside the blanket while sleeping, it indicates a Yin deficiency constitution.
Individuals with a Yin deficiency constitution often experience heat in their palms and soles, flushed or reddened cheeks, dry skin, dry mouth and throat, insomnia, and frequently have hard stools. They are mostly extroverted and active, with a relatively irritable temperament. This constitution is more common in windy, dry, and high UV radiation areas, particularly among students and young people, which may relate to their dietary preferences, such as enjoying fried, grilled, or barbecued foods, as well as habits like smoking and drinking, along with increased life stress.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) suggests that the principles of health preservation for those with Yin deficiency should focus on nourishing Yin and reducing fire. Commonly used formulas include Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six Flavor Rehmannia Pill), and herbs such as Mai Dong (Ophiopogon), Bai He (Lily Bulb), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Root), Yu Zhu (Polygonatum), and Sha Shen (Glehnia).
