Wen Xiao Shu says Making Traditional Chinese Medicine more beautiful, interesting, and closer to lifeMany people enjoy moxibustion; did you know that summer is the best season for it? Why is that?In summer, the Yang energy of heaven and earth is very abundant, and moxibustion is also a way to replenish Yang energy. When Yang energy is strong, our meridians and blood vessels are more easily unblocked, and with the help of the Yang energy from heaven and earth, the effects of moxibustion in warming the meridians and unblocking the channels are enhanced. In summer, we need to dispel dampness, and moxibustion can help with that. During moxibustion, sweating occurs, which helps to expel the dampness from the body. It is appropriate to sweat during summer because this season is about dispersing; our pores are open, allowing us to release the turbid energy that has been trapped all winter. Moxibustion can facilitate this dispersal. If you sweat a lot during moxibustion, you can drink some sour plum soup to replenish.“Winter diseases are treated in summer” refers to ailments caused by cold. In summer, with abundant Yang energy, it is easier to disperse cold energy, making moxibustion particularly effective for this purpose. Therefore, moxibustion in summer is more effective for dispelling cold than in winter. In summary, autumn is for gathering, winter is for storing, and the skin should not be open to release. In summer, we should grow and disperse; the skin can open and release, making it the most suitable time for moxibustion. As part of daily health maintenance, which acupuncture points should be moxibustioned to replenish Yang energy? The first point is Guanyuan (CV 4). Summer is particularly suitable for moxibustion at Guanyuan. This is the most important point on the Ren meridian and can greatly replenish Yuan Qi (original energy), strengthening our innate foundation. Guanyuan can address all issues related to kidney deficiency, such as women’s gynecological problems, excessive leukorrhea, uterine bleeding, cold in the uterus, dysmenorrhea, uterine polyps, uterine fibroids, infertility, etc. For men, it can help with premature ejaculation, impotence, nocturnal emissions, lower back and knee weakness, low sperm motility, frequent urination, etc.I remember a fan who used to suffer from dysmenorrhea. I suggested she moxibustion at Guanyuan every two days for half an hour, and after a month, the results were excellent; she has not experienced dysmenorrhea since. When moxibustion is applied to Guanyuan, the pure Yang nature of mugwort enters the uterus, warming it, dispelling dampness and cold. The uterus must be warm like spring, and letting go of emotions is crucial, as most dysmenorrhea is caused by cold.
There is a legend about an old general who, at ninety, was still vigorous, leading troops into battle and frequently taking concubines, showing vitality comparable to that of young men. After his death, someone was curious and examined his body, discovering deep scars at his Guanyuan point, which were left by moxibustion. This illustrates how effective moxibustion at Guanyuan is for replenishing energy. However, this is just a legend; take it with a grain of salt, but it tells us that moxibustion at Guanyuan has many benefits. The second point is Zusanli (ST 36). Zusanli strengthens the acquired foundation. The innate foundation is the kidneys, while the acquired foundation is the spleen and stomach. Zusanli can address all issues related to the spleen and stomach, and any type of gastritis can be treated with moxibustion at Zusanli. Zusanli is a major point for strengthening health, longevity, and wellness. It is said that the Japanese particularly enjoy moxibustion at Zusanli, as this point is crucial for health. Moxibustion at Zusanli can enhance our immunity.
The third point is Mingmen (GV 4). This is a point on the Du meridian. Guanyuan is on the Ren meridian, which can unblock the Ren meridian. Mingmen can unblock the Du meridian, thus opening both the Ren and Du meridians. The Ren meridian nourishes Yin, while the Du meridian nourishes Yang, achieving Yin-Yang balance. When Yin and Yang are balanced, all diseases dissipate. People who are sensitive to cold, with lower back pain and coldness, especially need moxibustion at Mingmen. In addition to these three points, another effective moxibustion method is to moxibustion wherever there is discomfort or cold sensitivity; this is called Ah Shi moxibustion.Alright, these are the three treasures I’m sharing with you. If conditions allow, you can moxibustion yourself; if not, you can visit a moxibustion clinic. Stick with it throughout the summer and see what surprises await you.Special reminder: A beautiful day begins! I hope my article brings you a good mood for the day.
