【Manifestations】Thirst with a desire to drink, dry throat and tongue, five hearts heat, yellow urine and dry stools, or night sweats, red tongue or thinness, scanty or even bare red coating,fine and rapid pulse.
【Treatment Principle】Nourish Yin and increase fluids.
【Formulas】Liu Wei Di Huang Tang (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Decoction), Zeng Ye Tang (Fluid-Enhancing Decoction) modified, or Qing Zi Tang Ning Fang (Clear and Nourishing Decoction). For those with Shaoyin Kidney Yin Deficiency, especially with Lung and Kidney Yin Deficiency, useMai Wei Di Huang Wan (Ophiopogon and Rehmannia Pill); for Heart and Kidney Yin Deficiency, use Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan (Heavenly Emperor’s Heart-Supplementing Pill); for Jueyin Yin Deficiency with Liver Yang Excess, and Liver and Kidney Yin Deficiency, useQi Ju Di Huang Wan (Goji and Chrysanthemum Rehmannia Pill) or Gui Shao Di Huang Wan (Return to Shao Rehmannia Pill).
02Qi and Yin Deficiency
【Manifestations】Fatigue and weakness, thirst with a preference for drinking, shortness of breath and reluctance to speak, dry mouth, five hearts heat, soreness and weakness in the lower back and knees, dry stools, frequent and copious urination, pale red or tender red tongue, scanty coating, fine and weak pulse.
【Treatment Principle】Tonify Qi and nourish Yin.
【Formulas】Shen Qi Di Huang Tang (Ginseng and Astragalus Rehmannia Decoction), Yi Lao Mai Men Dong Yin Zi (Easy Aging Ophiopogon Decoction), Sheng Mai San (Generate Pulse Powder) modified, or Qing Bu Tang Ning Fang (Clear and Nourishing Decoction). For those with Shaoyin Kidney Deficiency, especially with Yin Deficiency, can use Zeng Ye Tang, Liu Wei Di Huang Wan with Qi tonics; for those with Taiyin Spleen Deficiency, especially with Qi Deficiency, useShen Ling Bai Zhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Powder) or Qi Wei Bai Zhu San (Seven-Ingredient Atractylodes Powder) with Yin tonics.
03Both Yin and Yang Deficiency
【Manifestations】Dry mouth with excessive thirst, frequent night urination, five hearts heat, aversion to cold, fatigue, soreness and coldness in the lower back and knees, weakness in the limbs, excessive sweating and susceptibility to illness, diminished libido, male impotence, irregular bowel movements, enlarged tongue with scanty coating or white coating, deep and thin pulse, or deep, thin, and weak pulse.
【Treatment Principle】Nourish Yin and assist Yang.
【Formulas】Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan (Golden Cabinet Kidney Qi Pill), You Gui Wan (Right Return Pill) modified, or use Zhi Bu Tang Ning Fang (Nourishing and Supplementing Decoction). For those with Shaoyin Kidney Deficiency, especially with Yin Deficiency, add Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena), Huang Bai (Phellodendron), Huang Lian (Coptis) etc.; if Yang Deficiency is prominent, with aversion to cold, male impotence, or women with clear and thin discharge, treat with tonifying Kidney and strengthening Yang, using Wu Zi Yan Zong Wan (Five-Seed Pill) or Xuan Tu Wan (Black Tortoise Pill); if combined with Kidney Yang Deficiency with cold dampness invading, abdominal distension and pain, preference for warmth and pressure, diarrhea, or even undigested food, treat with warming and tonifying Spleen and Kidney, dispersing cold and regulating the center, using Fu Zi Li Zhong Wan (Aconite Regulating the Center Pill) or Si Shen Wan (Four Spirit Pill).
