Based on the classification of constitutions, the Wang Qi research team has developed the “Classification Scale for Nine Basic Constitutions in Traditional Chinese Medicine” and established the Wang Qi “Standards for Determining TCM Constitution Classification.” This standard has been recognized by the Chinese Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine and is promoted for nationwide use.
The determination is divided into four steps.
Step One: Fill Out the Form
Answer the questions in the “TCM Constitution Classification and Determination Table,” scoring each question on a 5-point scale.
Accumulating small issues leads to significant damage; accumulating diseases leads to decline.
Disregarding the principles leads to loss.
Be mindful of the small.
Its energy must be deficient.
Where evil gathers.
When yin and yang are separated, essence and energy are exhausted.
When yin is balanced and yang is secret, spirit can be treated.
Step Two: Calculate the Raw Score
Using a simple summation method, add the scores from each item to obtain the raw score. Scoring method: Raw score = sum of scores from each item.
Step Three: Calculate the Converted Score
Scoring method: Converted score = { (Raw score – number of items) / (number of items × 4) } × 100
Step Four: Determine the Constitution
Based on the results of the converted score, make the following determinations:
Example:
Example 1: A person’s converted scores for each constitution type are as follows: Balanced Constitution 75 points, Qi Deficiency Constitution 56 points, Yang Deficiency Constitution 27 points, Yin Deficiency Constitution 25 points, Phlegm-Damp Constitution 12 points, Damp-Heat Constitution 15 points, Blood Stasis Constitution 20 points, Qi Stagnation Constitution 18 points, Special Constitution 10 points. According to the determination standards, although the Balanced Constitution converted score is ≥60 points, not all other 8 constitution types have converted scores <40 points, and the Qi Deficiency Constitution converted score is ≥40 points, therefore this person cannot be classified as Balanced Constitution and should be classified as Qi Deficiency Constitution.
Example 2: A person’s converted scores for each constitution type are as follows: Balanced Constitution 75 points, Qi Deficiency Constitution 16 points, Yang Deficiency Constitution 27 points, Yin Deficiency Constitution 25 points, Phlegm-Damp Constitution 32 points, Damp-Heat Constitution 25 points, Blood Stasis Constitution 10 points, Qi Stagnation Constitution 18 points, Special Constitution 10 points. According to the determination standards, the Balanced Constitution converted score is ≥60 points, while the Phlegm-Damp Constitution converted score is 30-39 points, thus it can be classified as a tendency towards Phlegm-Damp Constitution, therefore the final constitution determination result for this person is primarily Balanced Constitution with a tendency towards Phlegm-Damp Constitution.
