Poria (Fu Ling)
Fu Ling
Poria, commonly known as Yun Ling or Song Ling, is a fungus that grows on the roots of pine trees. It resembles a sweet potato, with a black-brown outer skin and white or pink inner flesh. The dried sclerotium of the fungus Poria cocos, which belongs to the family Polyporaceae, is primarily found on the roots of Pinus massoniana or Pinus densiflora.
Poria is neutral in nature, sweet and bland in flavor, and enters the Heart, Lung, Spleen, and Kidney meridians. It is a very important herb in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for strengthening the Spleen and promoting urination. Its specific effects are as follows:
1. Promotes urination and reduces edema:Poria is sweet and bland, which can tonify and drain. Its neutral properties allow it to expel pathogens while supporting the body’s vital energy, promoting urination without harming the Zheng Qi (vital energy). It is one of the key herbs for treating edema caused by various factors such as cold, heat, deficiency, or excess.
2. Strengthens the Spleen and stops diarrhea:Poria can strengthen the Spleen and drain dampness to stop diarrhea, particularly effective for diarrhea caused by Spleen deficiency and excess dampness. It addresses both the root and branch of the condition and is often combined with herbs like Dang Shen (Codonopsis), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes), and Shan Yao (Chinese Yam) to enhance its effects. It can also be used as an adjunct herb to tonify the Lung and Spleen and treat Qi deficiency.
3. Nourishes the Heart and Spleen, calms the mind:Poria is commonly used to treat insomnia, forgetfulness, and excessive dreaming caused by deficiency of both the Heart and Spleen, as well as insufficient Qi and blood.
4. Enhances immune function:Poria polysaccharides have been shown to enhance immune function, and consuming Poria polysaccharides can improve cellular immune function in the elderly.
5. Anti-cancer properties:Poria contains vitamins, trace elements, and amino acids that have anti-cancer effects. Consuming Poria can inhibit the formation of cancer cells, damage their DNA, and eliminate carcinogenic free radicals from the body. It is effective for both cancer prevention and treatment.
6. Treats colds and coughs:Poria has certain curative effects on colds, especially those caused by damp-heat, which can lead to cough, phlegm, and symptoms such as weakness in the limbs, fatigue, and back pain. In such cases, Poria can be used in congee or soup for supportive treatment.
Poria has many benefits and can be consumed daily through congee or soup. However, due to its medicinal value, it should not be taken in excess.
