There are two diagnostic points here: one is that stomach pain worsens after anger, and the other is that stomach pain worsens after eating. If either of these triggers is present, it can be diagnosed as Qi stagnation stomach pain.Throughout life, a person may only experience a few types of illnesses, and thus use a few types of medicines repeatedly. As long as one finds the few suitable medicines, they will benefit for a lifetime. In today’s society, there are too many patients with suppressed liver Qi; we say this is due to emotional frustration, where their desires cannot be fulfilled and remain suppressed.Last time, when discussing depression, I recommended Xiao Yao Wan or Jia Wei Xiao Yao Wan (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer). Here, when encountering Qi stagnation stomach pain, it is still effective.Xiao Yao Wan can be used in many situations; as long as the pathogenesis is liver Qi stagnation, it is definitely applicable. If a person experiences stomach pain when angry, it is certainly due to liver Qi invading the spleen; Xiao Yao Wan, Jia Wei Xiao Yao Wan, and Xiao Chai Hu Granules are all effective. However, people sometimes find it difficult to summarize accurately; they may have forgotten about eating when angry, but stomach pain after eating is also a typical Qi stagnation issue.Of course, if one experiences stomach pain after eating cold food, it should be attributed to stomach cold; here, the food referred to is regular food.During Qi stagnation, one may also experience bloating; Xiao Yao Wan, Jia Wei Xiao Yao Wan, and Xiao Chai Hu Granules are also effective. If bloating leads to pain, indicating intestinal Qi stagnation, then one should additionally take Mu Xiang Shun Qi Wan (Aucklandia Qi Regulating Pill).Traditional Chinese Medicine | Stomach Pain (II): Qi Stagnation Stomach PainThis involves emotional issues, specifically related to the liver and gallbladder. Among the five flavors, sour corresponds to the liver. Here, I will introduce the sour flavor and discuss how to cleverly use the five flavors to solve bodily issues. In China, there is a place called Zhenjiang, which is famous for its vinegar production, with various types of vinegar. Shanxi also produces aged vinegar, while Zhenjiang’s fragrant vinegar is particularly well-known.Consuming vinegar is very beneficial for the gallbladder as it can stimulate bile secretion from the gallbladder. It is said that people from the Zhenjiang area have very few cases of gallstones; consuming vinegar promotes bile secretion, thus alleviating gallbladder inflammation and pain. The sour flavor can help soothe the liver and benefit the gallbladder; one can resolve gallbladder issues simply by drinking some vinegar without needing medication.Interestingly, it is said that people from Qinghai have fewer kidney stones because they consume a type of salt known as Rong salt from Qinghai Lake.Qing salt is a medicinal herb used in treating kidney stones; sea salt does not work, as seen in places like Wafangdian, Yingkou, and Pikou, which use sea salt and cannot treat kidney stones, but Qing salt can. People from Qinghai use Qing salt as table salt, making it difficult for them to develop kidney stones. If we often get angry, we can consume some sour foods in moderation, such as Wu Mei (Mume), Wu Mei, Bai He (Lily Bulb), Bai Shao (White Peony), and Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice). These four items are similar to food-grade herbal slices and are also very good for resolving emotional issues, although their efficacy may be somewhat limited for severe cases.Xiao Yao Wan, Jia Wei Xiao Yao Wan, and Xiao Chai Hu Granules can all address Qi stagnation stomach pain. What if a person is often angry? This is often due to kidney essence deficiency; one should tonify the kidneys to strengthen their resolve, so it is not only about soothing the liver and regulating Qi but also about remembering to tonify kidney essence.Next, we will explore how to address “Blood Stasis Stomach Pain” issues.
