Personal Analysis:

Let’s compare Huang Lian Shang Qing Pian and Niu Huang Jie Du Pian:

Huang Lian Shang Qing Pian, is for wind-heat excess in the upper jiao, with symptoms concentrated in the head and face; the heat evil may be caused by external heat or by consuming spicy or barbecued foods.

Niu Huang Jie Du Pian, on the other hand, addresses heat toxins accumulating in the middle jiao (stomach and intestines), likely due to the consumption of spicy or barbecued foods, but there are other causes as well.

Huang Lian Shang Qing Wan disperses wind-heat from the upper part with a series of ascending herbs, while Niu Huang Jie Du Pian completely expels heat from the lower part;

Thus, if taken incorrectly, it may lead to abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Niu Huang has a strong heat-clearing and detoxifying power; Xiong Huang has a strong detoxifying and swelling-reducing effect; Bing Pian has a strong dispersing ability; together they act quickly, powerfully, and can reach further.

Therefore, among heat-clearing and detoxifying medicines, Niu Huang Jie Du Pian is considered a top-tier option and should not be used lightly;

For severe conditions like herpes zoster, it can penetrate effectively, and for other heat toxin-related sores, it is even more effective;

For sore throat caused by a cold or general sore throat, Huang Lian Shang Qing Pian or Ban Lan Gen granules will suffice; do not hastily call upon the top-tier option.

Key Points for Differentiating Between Excess and Deficiency Heat:

Excess heat is characterized by acute redness, swelling, and pain; deficiency heat is recurrent, with mild pain or severe pain without redness, swelling, or heat, sometimes presenting as dry pain;

Excess heat shows a yellow tongue coating, while deficiency heat does not.

Excess heat responds quickly to heat-clearing and detoxifying medicines, while deficiency heat is difficult to treat and may even worsen.

Heat must be expelled; it can either be released from above or expelled from below.Thus, TCM treatment is akin to Da Yu controlling floods; it is better to guide than to block, reflecting wisdom in all aspects.
