Eight or Nine Out of Ten Suffer from Yang Deficiency and Cold Dampness

I started coming to the south in 2000, first attending a seminar on the theories of Zhang Zhongjing. Since then, I have come three to four times a year, including places like Guangzhou, Nanning in Guangxi, and many others. Now, after about seven years, I have seen over a thousand patients. Among them, there is a very special phenomenon: if classified according to the six excesses in TCM—wind, cold, summer heat, dampness, dryness, and fire—about eight or nine out of ten patients I have seen have Yang deficiency with cold dampness syndrome, while I have encountered almost none with Yin deficiency and heat syndrome.

The climate in the south is particularly hot; people generally say there is summer without winter. In such a scorching climate, it is astonishing that no one has heat syndrome, heat spots, or Yin deficiency syndrome. This has left me very surprised and puzzled.

Therefore, since 2000, I have been paying attention to the living habits of my friends in the south, seeking the root causes of these syndromes.

The First Issue is the Widespread Use of Air Conditioning

Air conditioning is a modern scientific invention. In terms of its pros and cons, I see more cons than pros. This has led to many artificial air conditioning diseases.

These include: one is artificial cold air; when it is extremely hot outside, entering a home feels like stepping into an ice cave. This drastic temperature change occurs multiple times a day, so cold dampness is the most harmful external factor. The artificial cold evil we create is even more severe than the natural cold evil. Therefore, I have found that the invention of air conditioning has first disrupted the natural living conditions and destroyed the rhythm of human life that has existed for thousands of years under normal climatic conditions. The appearance of air conditioning is relatively recent; we have lived very well for thousands of years without it. Since air conditioning became common, Yin and cold energy frequently enter the body. For example, today I will go out, and it feels like a ball of fire outside, then I enter an air-conditioned environment and immediately feel cold, as if one layer of clothing is not enough. This repeatedly compresses cold energy layer by layer within the body, leading to many illnesses, such as headaches, chronic rhinitis, and Yin summer heat syndrome. The so-called Yin summer heat syndrome is a condition caused by cold exposure in summer; it is different from summer heat syndrome. It appears to be a summer illness, but in reality, it is a Yin cold syndrome.

Another condition is chronic colds that are difficult to heal, dysmenorrhea in young women, postpartum illnesses, and infants raised in air-conditioned environments are most prone to asthma. This is a common pattern I have observed in recent years in southern regions; almost all areas have such patients. Another situation is unexplained diarrhea; after eating something and being in an air-conditioned environment, one quickly vomits and has diarrhea. There is also the case of persistent high fever. This high fever should be seen as a good sign; when cold energy enters the body, the Yang Qi must rise to fight back, leading to fever. The likelihood of fever is like this: when we have a fever, we often eat watermelon, consume ice, and take large amounts of antibiotics to suppress the surface symptoms, but in reality, this cold energy has not been expelled. It has entered from the outside. If you let it come out from the outside, the illness will resolve. As a result, prolonged fevers lasting seven to eight days, or even ten days, cannot be resolved. Moreover, after such treatments, the root of the illness remains, and once exposed to a similar or slightly suitable environment, the illness recurs. This situation is very common.

Another more common condition is that people with weak bodies experience muscle and joint pain throughout, and this pain has a cramping nature. This is what TCM summarizes as cold being the master of contraction. After feeling the cold evil, Yang Qi cannot resist for a moment, and it contracts; cold is the master of contraction. Generally, the diseases caused by air conditioning are of this many types. This is a major reason why people in the south do not have heat syndromes, and most belong to Yin syndromes, cold syndromes, and damp syndromes.

The Second Reason is the Lifestyle Rhythm, Some of Which Violates the Ancient Principles and Methods of Health Preservation Passed Down by Our Nation.

People in big cities have poor daily rhythms. They sleep very late or have nightlife, not going to bed until two o’clock. Humans should be in sync with nature; after the sun sets, one should go to sleep before ten o’clock. This is what Teacher Chen Yuqin from Shanghai has mentioned to you; this time is when the gallbladder meridian begins to produce blood and eliminate waste from the body. If one cannot sleep at this time and lacks sufficient deep sleep, the body’s functions will not perform well. This is one situation. The biological clock of the human body will also be altered and disrupted.

Additionally, due to the hot air, people particularly enjoy eating cold foods, such as ice water, ice cubes, frozen juices, etc. Or when it is hot, they take cold showers, or when sleeping, they set the air conditioning very low, leading to illness while sleeping.

What are the consequences of this? One is that healthy people, who do not yet feel ill, often have a pale and grayish complexion, not very rosy. We see young staff in various organizations, especially in restaurants, living in such environments for a long time, and their complexion looks very poor, in a sub-healthy state, but they have not fallen ill.

Another is that people’s resistance decreases; they become sensitive to wind and cold, are particularly prone to colds, have poor appetites, or experience diarrhea. This is a very serious consequence after Yang Qi is damaged. Additionally, women’s menstrual disorders, postpartum illnesses, and elderly people’s heart and lung diseases are all closely related to this.

I have participated in the rescue of critically ill patients in Western medicine ICUs. When I entered the ICU, I felt unbearably cold. Patients with heart failure, lung failure, or kidney failure should be the most afraid of cold. However, under those (low-temperature) conditions, it is not feasible. But this is our regulation. Therefore, such patients are very difficult to save. I suggest that it is best to set the air conditioning above 26 degrees; this is one method. Another is to tell the family to let the patient leave the hospital quickly. Under such conditions, using large amounts of antibiotics and my methods to combat the illness is counterproductive.

Particular Attention to Nourishing Yang Qi During the Dog Days

Why is there a saying in the “Huangdi Neijing” about “nourishing Yang in spring and summer”? This is a very correct conclusion drawn from thousands of years of practice.

In TCM, we emphasize treating diseases before they occur. Treating diseases before they occur does not mean treating those who are not ill. Rather, it means finding out if there is an illness and treating it immediately.

This method of nourishing Yang in spring and summer is effective in preventing many diseases. Because humans are a product of the natural atmosphere and are synchronized with nature, the laws of nature are warm in spring, hot in summer, cool in autumn, and warm in winter. All living things must follow this law. In winter, Yang Qi accumulates a lot of energy, preparing for the coming spring. When spring arrives, Yang Qi gradually rises, and at this time, winter animals awaken. Some plants begin to grow slowly, sprouting and developing; this is one phase. Then it further develops into summer when Yang Qi is further released and generated. At this time, both human and animal life grows and develops under such conditions. These two phases consume the most Yang Qi.

Therefore, the ancient people proposed that during the spring when Yang Qi is generated and in the summer when the climate is particularly hot, especially during the hottest days, it is crucial to emphasize nourishing Yang because Yang Qi is consumed particularly heavily. At this time, it is necessary to continuously supplement and protect it; harming Yang Qi is most serious, and this trend is not only severe among southern people but also prevalent in the north.

Due to air conditioning, eating cold foods, and taking cold showers, many people develop very difficult-to-treat illnesses. Therefore, the principle of nourishing Yang in spring and summer is proposed in response to this situation.

Everyone thinks this is very reasonable. At the same time, if each of our friends in Guangdong can follow this method and slightly change their living habits, their health status will improve quickly. Of course, if there have been many illnesses for a long time, after adjustment, but within the scope of protection and maintenance, nourishing Yang in spring and summer is a very important principle and a very effective method. In fact, Yang Qi should not only be nourished in spring and summer; it should not be harmed at any time of the year.

The Harmony of Yin and Yang Under the Dominance of Yang Qi

When discussing the relationship between Yin and Yang, we generally believe that Yin and Yang must be balanced. This concept is not entirely correct.

Why? From the “Huangdi Neijing” and the “I Ching,” it is particularly emphasized that human Yang Qi is the foundation of life. Yin encompasses all the organs of the human body, the food you consume, and various nutrients; these belong to Yin. Yang Qi occupies a commanding position and is the leader, so Yin things are all under the command of Yang; it is absolutely not a matter of equal footing, where Yin and Yang are balanced. The harmony of Yin and Yang refers to the harmony under the dominance of Yang Qi.

The “Neijing” has several phrases: one is “When Yin is balanced and Yang is dense, the spirit is solid.” Another is: “In all matters of Yin and Yang, Yang density is solid.” What is the importance of Yin and Yang? Yang is secret; when your Yang Qi is in a solid state, only then can you achieve the balance of Yin and Yang. Additionally, the “Neijing” has many important viewpoints, such as “Yang Qi is like the sky and the sun; if it loses its place, it shortens life and does not shine.” Shortening life means a short lifespan. The “Neijing” places great importance on human Yang Qi; Yang is like the sun in the sky. Without the sun, there is no life.

For example, we observe the rise and fall of Yin and Yang at different life stages of a person. In childhood, Yang Qi is naturally vigorous, and growth and development continue into adulthood, where the so-called balance of Yin and Yang is in a healthy state. However, in old age, one may experience runny nose, drooling, tearing, or frequent urination; these are all due to the weakening of Yang Qi, which loses its commanding role. During the elderly danger period, especially for conditions like coronary heart disease, rheumatic heart disease, pulmonary heart disease, or acute heart failure, the only solution is to rescue Yang; if Yang Qi is restored, the person can survive. This is like the valve of a faucet; its screw gradually loosens, and it needs to be tightened. The method is to supplement Yang Qi and protect it. At this time, we must also pay special attention to the fact that even if the person is very ill, as long as there is a trace of Yang Qi that does not disperse, this can be saved. Therefore, this is one aspect of the issue.

Thus, there is a saying in medicine: “In life and death, rescuing Yang is urgent.” This is because of the relationship between kidney Qi and middle Qi; the spleen and stomach belong to the earth in the five elements. The ancients had a vivid metaphor: it is like a pot. Inside the pot, there are various living things and water; how can this water and food be sustained? It depends on the fire beneath the pot; the pot is equivalent to the meaning of the cauldron. Therefore, the fire beneath the pot is crucial. Although middle Qi is so important, without the maintenance of the fire beneath the pot, it is difficult to survive. Thus, at the most critical moment, we must take care of the fire beneath the pot. Therefore, the theories of the ancient merchants and Mr. Zheng Qinan from the Qing Dynasty, and Mr. Peng Ziyi’s ancient TCM theories, although each has its focus, if we can integrate them, it would be a very complete system.

I will give you another example. In TCM, there is a saying: “Qi is the commander of blood.” What is the relationship between Qi and blood? They are absolutely not equal; the balance of Qi and blood is not the same. Whether blood can flow smoothly in the blood vessels, circulate, and transport Yin and Yang to various parts of the five organs depends on Qi to push and lead it. If there is no leadership from Qi, if Qi is weak, bleeding can occur, such as gum bleeding. How to treat this condition? It is to supplement Qi; for example, the Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang contains only two herbs: Huang Qi and Dang Gui. Dang Gui is half of Huang Qi; this is a very clear method. Why is Huang Qi used heavily in blood supplementation? Because Huang Qi is twice as much as Dang Gui; this is the reasoning. Of course, this is a relatively clear example. If there is a significant hemorrhage, the person is on the verge of death. The ancients had a method to deal with this: “Blood that has been lost cannot be quickly regenerated; the Qi that has not been lost must be urgently solidified.” In this case, it is necessary to quickly restore the commanding role of Yang Qi, and the bleeding can be stopped quickly, saving the patient. Therefore, the relationship between Yin and Yang is like the relationship between Qi and blood; this way, everyone can understand.

I will now give a few examples, a few case studies. One patient I saw in the south was a journalist from the Shanxi Public Security Bureau. He came to Guangzhou to help the provincial committee organize the heroic deeds of the older generation during the Anti-Japanese War. He worked in Guangzhou for three months. After returning, he fell seriously ill for three months. What was the situation of his illness? It was due to air conditioning. In the office, everyone was accustomed to this environment, but he could not adapt. He insisted on finishing his writing and returned home, only to fall seriously ill. His illness was so severe that he could only take a breath after walking three to five steps. Additionally, he had a very poor appetite, eating little and experiencing diarrhea. He was not only afraid of wind and cold but also wore cotton clothes, a cotton hat, and a mask in the hot summer when he came to see me. He told me that he could not tolerate even the slightest breeze from opening a door. If I turned a page of a book, he could not bear the wind. This shows the severity of how air conditioning harms Yang Qi. In the end, he said that the Yin and cold were layer upon layer pressed into the deepest part of the three Yin meridians of the body, and it could not come out immediately. I treated him for a month and a half, and he recovered.

Another case is a female university student who, during her menstrual period, took a cold shower and ate a large bag of ice cubes. The weather was particularly hot, and she set the air conditioning very low at night. As a result, from the next day, she experienced amenorrhea; her menstruation stopped. Moreover, she had severe abdominal pain, and taking many painkillers did not resolve the issue. Just as I came to Guangzhou, she sought me out for this condition. I told her to use the method of warming the meridians and dispersing cold, and she quickly recovered. So, the meaning of sharing these experiences is to exchange views with my friends in Guangdong. Of course, it is impossible to stop using these habits immediately, but adjusting the temperature a bit higher is fine, to a level where it is not too hot but also not too cold. This way, your body will not suffer harm.

How to Remove Cold Energy?

For cold damage, the best remedy to support Yang Qi is “Si Ni Tang”. Using a small dose of Si Ni Tang as a health supplement from now until autumn will definitely help expel the Yin and cold you have suffered during summer.

If in clinical practice, you encounter conditions of simultaneous cold and heat, how to handle this? It depends on the specific situation, generally in three cases:

One is Shaoyang syndrome treated with Xiao Chai Hu Tang; one is Jueyin syndrome treated with Wu Mei Wan; the other is Taiyang exterior syndrome. If cold and heat are mixed, it is particularly important to note that in this mixed cold-heat syndrome, heat is often a manifestation. If there is internal deficiency and insufficient Yang Qi, supplementing Yang Qi can help eliminate the heat.

Many patients, over a hundred cases, must place their feet on ice to sleep at night. This situation seems to indicate severe heat, but in fact, it is weak Yang with external heat. This Si Ni Tang can return Yang Qi to the lower part of the body, and it will naturally improve. It works very quickly, using only two or three doses of medicine. This condition is the most difficult to distinguish and can easily deceive; diseases, like people, are very cunning. What they manifest is not necessarily their true nature, so one must think of the deeper issues and the underlying causes to avoid making mistakes. If one does not identify the root cause, the Yang Qi will be completely exhausted, leading to a dead end. Therefore, treating fever involves a very profound understanding. Recently, I heard about a case where someone asked how to treat gallbladder duct stones. There is no ready-made method for this; it depends on whether the patient is more Yin deficient or Yang deficient, whether it is Qi deficiency or other issues. You need to use medicine to treat it; this medicine is called Da Ye Jin Qian Cao, using 120 grams daily, boiled into water for drinking. Additionally, use Yu Nao Shi, about 6 grams daily, ground into powder. If the patient is very weak, whether one dose of medicine can soften it is undoubtedly a sign of Yang deficiency, so add this folk remedy to Si Ni Tang.

Moreover, I have summarized this disease: regardless of whether it is internal or external, in the limbs, joints, or the nine orifices, as long as Yang Qi is not in place, that is the disease. It is very simple; just one sentence. Because this Yin and cold energy, for example, tumors, the earliest occurrence of tumors is Yang deficiency. After Yang Qi is deficient, Yin Qi gradually condenses into a small mass, which then gradually grows into something that affects life. Therefore, when treating tumors, I focus on Yang Qi. First, I ensure the patient’s Yang Qi is preserved and not further consumed, then I find ways to gradually shrink the tumor, allowing the patient to coexist with the tumor temporarily. Once the Yang Qi is strong enough, it can attack and defeat the tumor. This is my formula, and this method has cured many patients with tumors.
