Yesterday in the clinic, a patient asked me this question:
“Director He, why have I been feeling anxious and irritable lately, with a quick temper and sometimes wanting to throw things to vent? I often can’t sleep, and I’ve taken a lot of medicine without any effect, and now I’m feeling even more heat. What’s going on?”
After hearing this, I told him: Actually, many times, these symptoms in the body are likely related to Yang Qi. If the wrong areas are supplemented or the wrong methods are used, the results may be counterproductive. Today, I will explain this issue in detail.Remember to like and share!
• Why do we say that the stagnation of Yang Qi and excess phlegm-dampness are the “culprits”?
Think about it, when Yang Qi becomes stagnant and phlegm-dampness accumulates in the body, it is like a river blocked by silt, preventing the water from flowing normally. Naturally, the body will also experience various problems, and the described anxiety, irritability, and insomnia are typical manifestations.
Stagnation of Yang Qi can lead to obstruction of Qi flow, preventing Yang Qi from nourishing the heart and spirit, making one prone to anxiety.
Phlegm-dampness, as a pathological product, obstructs the flow of Qi and blood, affecting the function of the organs. The heart governs the spirit; phlegm-dampness obstructs heart Qi, causing irritability and palpitations, and can disturb the spirit leading to insomnia. Prolonged obstruction of Qi and blood, along with phlegm-dampness disturbing the spirit, results in emotional dysregulation, liver Qi stagnation, and irritability, even leading to extreme behaviors.
• Is there any way to improve this situation?
The answer is yes! Today, I will share with you a herbal remedy that can invigorate blood, remove stasis, and effectively improve symptoms such as distress, palpitations, insomnia, and irritability caused by stagnation of Yang Qi and excess phlegm-dampness. Remember to like and share!
Dan Shen (Salvia miltiorrhiza)
Dan Shen enters the heart and liver meridians, and has the effects of invigorating blood, removing stasis, relieving pain, calming the heart, and clearing heat.
It acts like a diligent “river cleaner,”able to clear the blocked pathways of Yang Qi and promote smooth circulation of Qi and blood. Its properties of invigorating blood and removing stasis can dissipate the stasis formed by the stagnation of Yang Qi and phlegm-dampness, allowing Qi and blood to regain vitality.
At the same time, Dan Shen can also calm the heart and relieve irritability, helping to alleviate issues such as irritability and insomnia caused by obstructed Qi and blood and phlegm-dampness disturbing the spirit, allowing the spirit to return to tranquility. With the smooth flow of Qi and the dissipation of phlegm-dampness, liver Qi can gradually relax, effectively improving irritability.
However, it is important to note:
Everyone’s constitution and condition are different. Normally, the formation of stagnation of Yang Qi and excess phlegm-dampness does not happen overnight, and the course of the disease is often prolonged.
Relying solely on Dan Shen may be insufficient for patients with more severe conditions.
If there is also liver Qi stagnation, it can be combined with Chai Hu (Bupleurum) and Yu Jin (Curcuma) to soothe the liver and regulate Qi, further alleviating irritability; if phlegm-dampness is particularly severe, it can be combined with Ban Xia (Pinellia) and Fu Ling (Poria) to enhance phlegm-resolving and dampness-removing effects, better improving various discomforts caused by phlegm-dampness.Or other issues, such as poor spleen and stomach function, may require adjustments to the formula.
Traditional Chinese Medicine emphasizes following the physiological and pathological rules of the human body. When symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, and insomnia occur, analyzing the problem from the perspective of Qi and blood and organ function can help quickly identify the root cause, allowing for more targeted adjustments.
However, TCM treatment emphasizes syndrome differentiation and treatment. If you are not clear about your constitution and condition, it is essential to consult a professional doctor before using any medication, and do not blindly self-medicate.
Do you have any questions? Feel free to ask me, and after reviewing your situation in detail, I will provide you with suitable adjustment suggestions.
