Everyone desires to maintain eternal youth, and the essence of vitality lies in the balance of Qi and Blood! Only when Qi is abundant and Blood is sufficient can the skin appear rosy and radiant, and the spirit be vigorous.
As we age, our Qi and Blood begin to decline, leading to dull complexion, body shape changes, weight gain, and various conditions of Qi deficiency and Blood deficiency… Don’t worry, just look here!

Have you ever experienced this: squatting on the ground for two minutes, then suddenly standing up, and everything goes black for a moment? If so, you are likely suffering from Blood deficiency!
Eight Major Symptoms of Blood Deficiency1
People with Blood deficiency have a pale complexion, lacking the rosy glow;
2
Those with Blood deficiency are prone to insomnia, known as “Blood not nourishing the Heart,” which leads to sleeplessness; this is quite common among modern individuals;
3
People with Blood deficiency often experience forgetfulness, easily forgetting names of people they just met, which is also due to “Blood not nourishing the Heart”;
4
Individuals with Blood deficiency have pale mucous membranes, such as the color of their nails, lips, and eyelids, which are often very pale;
5
Those with Blood deficiency easily feel fatigued. Generally, women enjoy shopping, but women with Blood deficiency can feel exhausted after just a short walk. Additionally, during fatigue, they may experience palpitations, a weak heartbeat, and dizziness;
6
In summer, their hands and feet may feel warm, but in winter, they become immediately cold. Even when entering an air-conditioned room in summer, they may feel the same; this is due to Blood deficiency failing to nourish the limbs. Such individuals are sensitive to cold and need to wear more clothes in winter;
7
Squatting for two minutes and then standing up suddenly can cause a momentary blackout; this often indicates insufficient Qi and Blood. However, TCM theory states that Qi and Blood mutually generate each other, so supplementing Blood can often yield very good results;
8
People with Blood deficiency have a pale tongue without a rosy appearance.

Many people think that Blood deficiency is the same as anemia, but in reality, there are certain differences. Many individuals with mild Blood deficiency may not show anemia in blood tests; however, those with severe Blood deficiency often meet the criteria for anemia.
Consequences of Blood Deficiency
01
Harm to the Heart
Blood deficiency can affect the heart. Symptoms such as palpitations, shortness of breath, and chest tightness indicate that the heart is not receiving enough blood. Medical treatment is necessary to avoid delaying the condition and leading to unpredictable consequences.
02
Harm to the Brain
Blood deficiency can damage the brain. Dizziness or memory decline are initial signs of insufficient blood supply to the brain.
The brain is the command center of the body; issues with the brain can cause significant problems for our body, so we must pay enough attention.
03
Harm to the Liver
Fatty liver and high blood lipids can be said to result from long-term insufficient blood supply to the liver. To prevent liver issues, it is essential to ensure adequate blood supply.
Of course, there are many ways to protect the liver, such as avoiding staying up late at night.
04
Harm to the Kidneys
The kidneys are organs responsible for detoxification in the body. If creatinine levels are elevated, it indicates that toxins are not being expelled from the body, partly due to insufficient blood supply to the kidneys, which lack the power to eliminate all toxins.
05
Harm to the Digestive System
Blood deficiency can affect digestive function because the normal operation of the digestive system requires sufficient blood supply. When Qi and Blood are insufficient, the digestive system will suffer from a lack of blood, weakening its function and leading to gastrointestinal disorders.
06
Breast Diseases
Women with Blood deficiency are more prone to breast diseases, the most common being breast hyperplasia, which is caused by Qi stagnation and Blood stasis due to insufficient Qi and Blood.
Thus, breast diseases are also common consequences of insufficient Qi and Blood.
07
Menstrual Disorders
When there is insufficient Qi and Blood, the flow of Qi and Blood in a woman’s body becomes obstructed, leading to Qi stagnation and Blood stasis, which can affect menstruation. Common symptoms include delayed menstruation, reduced menstrual flow, and even irregular menstruation or amenorrhea.
Causes of Blood Deficiency
TCM expert Dr. Luo Dalun believes that there are three main causes of Blood deficiency:
01
Spleen and Stomach Weakness
In TCM, it is said that “the Spleen and Stomach are the source of postnatal transformation and generation,” meaning that the Spleen and Stomach absorb the nutrients from food and transform them into Blood.
Modern people often overeat, leading to damage to the Spleen and Stomach. Many people indulge in gourmet food, but the more they eat, the more they harm their Spleen and Stomach, resulting in poor nutritional status.
This is akin to a computer that can open one document without issue, but if it tries to open ten thousand, it will crash. Such individuals often suffer from Blood deficiency due to Spleen and Stomach damage.
02
Excessive Worry
Modern life is filled with stress, and excessive worry about earning money, socializing, and striving can deplete the heart’s essence, leading to Blood deficiency.
Additionally, TCM holds that “worry harms the Spleen”; if a person worries excessively, the function of the Spleen will be suppressed, leading to insufficient Blood production and exacerbating Blood deficiency.
03
Women’s Blood Loss
Women, due to their unique physiological structure and functions, experience many opportunities for blood loss throughout their lives. If they do not understand how to nourish themselves, it can lead to Blood deficiency.
Such women are common; they visit hospitals for their issues but find no results, yet they feel unwell without knowing why.
Blood Deficiency Can Be Treated with Yuling Paste
There are many commonly heard dietary therapies for nourishing Blood, and everyone can easily name a couple of blood-nourishing ingredients, such as red dates, pig liver, brown sugar, and Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin)…
However, many people find that even after trying these ingredients, they still see no effect. This is partly related to the amount consumed, partly due to insufficient duration of use, and also because the efficacy of single ingredients is limited.
Today, I would like to introduce a classic dietary recipe—Yuling Paste, also known as “Dai Shen Paste,” which is a recipe from the dietary work “Sui Xi Ju Yin Shi Pu” by Qing Dynasty TCM master Wang Mengying. It is also a highly recommended blood-nourishing product by Dr. Luo Dalun, suitable for both men and women.
Preparation Method:
Take ten parts of longan flesh and one part of American ginseng (adjust the amount as needed, ensuring the ratio is maintained);
Grind the two ingredients together until well mixed (most pharmacies can grind them into powder), place in a bowl, and steam in a water bath for over four hours;
After preparation, take one spoonful daily, dissolve in hot water for consumption;
Store any remaining paste sealed in the refrigerator.
The longan flesh in the recipe is a key herb for nourishing the Heart and Spleen, with the effects of nourishing Heart Blood and calming the spirit. At the same time, longan flesh is sweet and enters the Spleen, nourishing the Spleen and Stomach, which can help the Spleen and Stomach generate new Blood.
Therefore, Yuling Paste is beneficial for sleep, regulating menstruation, relieving constipation, and nourishing Qi and Blood. If you have symptoms of Blood deficiency, it is worth a try.
However, please remember that pregnant women should not take it, nor should those with Blood stasis, and it is not suitable for those without symptoms of Blood deficiency.
If you are unsure about your physical condition, it is advisable to consult a qualified TCM hospital for diagnosis and guidance.
If you experience symptoms of heat after taking Yuling Paste, it indicates that it is not suitable for you, and it is recommended to stop taking it promptly.
Little Doctor
Wang Mengying recorded in “Sui Xi Ju Yin Shi Pu” that Yuling Paste should be steamed for “a hundred times,” approximately 40 hours. Due to the lengthy time, Dr. Luo Dalun simplified it to 4 hours.
In fact, if it can be steamed for more than 10 hours, the sweetness of the longan can be diminished, and the efficacy of Yuling Paste will be even better, leading to no heat symptoms and significantly improved sleep.
The specific steaming time should be chosen based on individual circumstances~
