In daily life, many people often suffer from gastrointestinal issues, which are often due to dampness in the body. So, what can we eat to eliminate dampness? The correct answer is — Fu Ling (Poria)!

Fu Ling has been regarded as one of the “Eight Treasures of Traditional Chinese Medicine” since ancient times. Its effects and functions are numerous, and when combined with various herbs, it can exert unique benefits, earning it the title of “Divine Medicine of All Seasons”.

As early as over 2000 years ago, the Huai Nan Zi recorded, “The thousand-year-old pine has Fu Ling beneath it.” Today, I will share a story about how Fu Ling helped win a battle.

It is said that when Genghis Khan was fighting in the Central Plains, it rained continuously for several months, and most of his soldiers suffered from rheumatism due to the unsuitable climate. Seeing the imminent defeat, Genghis Khan was very anxious.

Later, a few soldiers who accidentally consumed Fu Ling recovered from their rheumatism. Upon hearing this, Genghis Khan was overjoyed and quickly sent people to transport large quantities of Fu Ling from Luotian County, a place known for its abundant supply, for his soldiers to consume.

After eating Fu Ling, the soldiers’ symptoms of rheumatism were alleviated, and Genghis Khan ultimately won the battle. From then on, the miraculous effect of Fu Ling in alleviating rheumatism became widely known.

Fu Ling has the functions of promoting urination and draining dampness, strengthening the spleen and stomach, and calming the mind. It is neutral in nature, slightly sweet in taste, nourishing without being greasy, and diuretic without harming fluids. It can treat edema, reduced urination, spleen deficiency with poor appetite, diarrhea, and restlessness.

Fu Ling is particularly suitable for those with physical weakness. Elderly individuals with poor spleen and stomach function, lack of appetite, frequent diarrhea, prolonged depression, and weakness in the limbs can consume it regularly. How can we cleverly incorporate Fu Ling into our daily diet? Here are five healthful ways to enjoy it!

There are many ways to consume Fu Ling, and the simplest is to make congee. You can choose some warm or neutral ingredients, such as Shan Yao (Chinese Yam), which has the effects of tonifying the spleen, generating fluids, and nourishing the kidneys, to cook with Fu Ling in rice porridge.

You can also add Fu Ling, Yi Yi Ren (Job’s Tears), and ginger when making rice porridge. Since Fu Ling and Yi Yi Ren have the effects of strengthening the spleen and draining dampness, and ginger can warm the stomach and dispel cold, this porridge not only aids digestion but also alleviates stomach cold.

02

Fu Ling Cakes

In addition to Fu Ling congee, there are Fu Ling cakes. You can dry Fu Ling, grind it into powder, and mix it with flour to make various pastries, which are even better when paired with a cup of Fu Ling tea.

Method: Prepare 50 grams of Fu Ling and 450 grams of flour. Dry the Fu Ling and grind it into powder, then mix it with the flour; add yeast and knead with water to form a dough. After fermentation, shape it into a 5 cm square cake and steam it over high heat until cooked. Consume once daily for breakfast.

Method: Take 30 grams of lotus seeds, 30 grams of red beans, 30 grams of Fu Ling, and 20 grams of honey. Soak the lotus seeds, peel, and remove the heart; wash the red beans and boil them with the lotus seeds in a pot of boiling water. First, bring to a boil over high heat, then simmer until the lotus seeds and red beans are soft; add the powdered Fu Ling, stirring while adding until it reaches a thick soup consistency. Remove from heat, let it cool slightly, and mix in the honey until well combined.

04

Steamed Fish with Fu Ling

Pairing Fu Ling with fish can create a nutritious main dish that is also simple to prepare.

Method: First, prepare 15 grams of Fu Ling, one fish (such as mandarin fish), and some ginger and scallions. Crush the Fu Ling into a fine powder, then make several slits in the cleaned fish. Cut the ginger and scallions into shreds for later use. Next, evenly coat the fish with the Fu Ling powder, both on the surface and inside the belly, and place the ginger and scallion shreds on top. The preparation for steamed fish with Fu Ling is now complete.

Then, steam the prepared fish over high heat for 10 minutes. After steaming, pour the fish juices into a small pot, add some soy sauce, and season with salt to taste. Pour this mixture over the fish, and the delicious steamed fish with Fu Ling is ready to be enjoyed.
