For some common physical ailments, one of the most frequently asked questions is “What should I eat?” Indeed, besides medication, many common foods in daily life can play a significant supportive role in the recovery of the body. Today, I will introduce some foods that have “good effects”.
What to eat when the body is unwell?01For poor liver function, eat red dates
Red dates are rich in trace elements and can promote the liver’s synthesis of albumin, as well as adjust immune dysfunction. Eating three red dates a day can help regulate symptoms such as physical weakness, neurasthenia, spleen and stomach disharmony, and indigestion. Moreover, red dates are warming foods that can harmonize qi and blood, achieving a warming effect on the body.
02For poor heart function, eat apples
Apples are heart-protective fruits that benefit cardiovascular health. Studies show that apples have effects similar to statin medications on cardiovascular health; eating one apple a day can help reduce the risk of stroke and heart disease, especially in people over 50.
03For spleen and stomach weakness, eat white lentils
White lentils have the function of strengthening the spleen and harmonizing the stomach, and can be used for those with spleen and stomach weakness who have poor appetite, vomiting, or diarrhea.
Take 100 grams of japonica rice, wash it clean, soak it in cold water for half an hour, then drain it, put it in a pot, add an appropriate amount of cold boiled water, and boil over high heat; add 100 grams of fresh white lentils to the pot, then switch to low heat to simmer into porridge. Add brown sugar (or rock sugar), stir well, let it sit for a while until the sugar dissolves, and then serve.
04For liver and kidney deficiency, eat goji berries
Goji berries enter the liver and kidney meridians, and eating them can effectively tonify kidney qi, benefit essence, improve vision, nourish blood, and delay aging.
Goji berries can be cooked with fresh yam to make porridge, which has the effects of benefiting qi, nourishing the lungs, and tonifying the liver and kidneys, making it an excellent food therapy for those with lung deficiency and cough. They can also be brewed with chrysanthemum tea to clear the liver, brighten the eyes, and delay skin aging, suitable for office workers who sit for long periods.
05For poor stomach health, eat pumpkin
Pumpkin is sticky and rich in pectin, which can protect the stomach from irritation. You can add some pumpkin when cooking porridge or make a simple and nutritious pumpkin soup.
06For kidney deficiency and lower back pain, eat chestnuts
Chestnuts, whether eaten raw or cooked, are sweet and delicious, and can stave off hunger. Eating 6 to 10 chestnuts daily is very beneficial for strengthening the spleen, tonifying the kidneys, and alleviating lower back pain. Those who often experience lower back pain can also try this.
07For poor lung health, eat tremella soup
Tremella has a lung-moistening effect similar to bird’s nest, containing gelatin that keeps the throat and lungs moist. Tremella soup is recommended; first, soak the tremella, wash it, tear it into small pieces, blanch it, then cook it with goji berries, red dates, and rock sugar in water until the tremella is soft. Finally, add sweet corn kernels and cook for another 15-20 minutes.
08For constipation, eat brown rice porridge
Brown rice has carbohydrates wrapped in coarse fiber, which slows down digestion and absorption, increases satiety, and is beneficial for controlling appetite and blood sugar, making it a good choice for those who are overweight, have “three highs” (high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high cholesterol), and suffer from constipation. However, brown rice is particularly difficult to cook; it should be soaked for two hours in advance, and using a pressure cooker is best for easy cooking and digestion.
09For insomnia, eat mulberries
If you have trouble sleeping or wake up early, consider eating some mulberries. Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that mulberries can nourish the liver and kidney yin; when kidney yin is sufficient, sleep will improve. Additionally, fresh mulberries are rich in dietary fiber, which can promote intestinal peristalsis, and regular consumption can help with bowel movements and detoxification.
10For high cholesterol, eat hawthorn
Hawthorn is the fruit with the highest pectin content, around 2%. Current pharmacological studies on hawthorn indicate that it can lower blood cholesterol, enhance myocardial contraction, increase coronary blood flow, and promote bile secretion. Hawthorn is quite sour; it can be made into soup, boiled in water, or cooked into hawthorn sauce with a little sugar.
11For high blood pressure, eat celery
Celery can lower blood pressure and reduce liver fire; hypertensive patients can eat some. Since celery can cool the blood and stop bleeding, it can eliminate liver fire, calming the liver and mind. With the liver fire gone, blood pressure will naturally not rise, and celery can also promote bowel movements and clear the intestines. You can choose to stir-fry celery with eggs or tofu.
12For high blood sugar, eat cinnamon
Eating 3 grams of cinnamon daily can help control blood sugar levels. The reason cinnamon can lower blood sugar is that it contains flavonoid polyphenols, which can improve insulin resistance, enhance insulin sensitivity, protect pancreatic cells, and promote insulin secretion.
13For dry skin, eat pine nuts
Older adults are prone to skin itching; consuming pine nuts can moisturize the skin and prevent and assist in treating dry skin. Additionally, pine nuts contain 681 kilocalories per 100 grams, and regular consumption can provide high energy, especially beneficial for the elderly and those with physical weakness during the cold winter.
14For excessive gray hair, eat black beans
Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that black beans can dispel exterior heat, nourish blood, calm the liver, tonify the kidneys, and restore black hair. Therefore, for home kidney tonification and hair darkening, you can try black bean porridge.
Take an appropriate amount of black beans, yam, sesame, glutinous rice, goji berries, and black dates. Soak the black beans in advance, then put them with the other ingredients into a clay pot, add an appropriate amount of clean water, bring to a boil over high heat, then switch to low heat to simmer until the black beans are soft. Add salt or sugar to taste, which can tonify qi and blood and generate body fluids.
15For sore throat and cough, eat radish
White radish has the effects of clearing heat and generating fluids, cooling the blood and stopping bleeding, relieving qi and promoting digestion, and enhancing appetite and spleen function. Therefore, white radish is very effective in assisting the treatment of acute and chronic pharyngitis, alleviating symptoms such as sore throat, dry throat, and cough, and is also effective for children.
Boil a large pot of white radish soup and drink it morning and evening. For chronic pharyngitis and chronic tonsillitis, regularly consuming this soup can also clear the throat.
16For anemia, eat black-boned chicken
People with anemia often feel dizzy and fatigued, and their complexion is pale. You can make black-boned chicken soup, using chicken broth as the base for porridge, adding a small amount of shredded chicken and fragrant rice to cook into porridge, which can supplement various nutrients and tastes good. Black-boned chicken is an excellent food therapy for nourishing the body and tonifying qi and blood.
