Children’s Cupping Therapy
Cupping therapy can be divided into two types: air cupping and fire cupping.Air cupping is safe and easy to operate.Fire cupping comes in many varieties, including ceramic and glass cups, which are relatively hard and can cause more pain. Cupping made from Bian stone is relatively delicate and fits better with the skin, providing a more comfortable and gentle experience.Bian cupping has a dual adjustment function, allowing for both cooling and warming effects.【Operation】Before use, disinfect the cups with alcohol swabs or 75% alcohol.Air cupping is generally performed on the back acupoints. For example, Dazhui (大椎), Feishu (肺腧), Gan Shu (肝腧), and Pishu (脾胃腧).Adjust the pulling technique according to the child’s tolerance.Additionally, air cupping can be moved along the skin, similar to gua sha, which has a cooling effect. It is important to control the strength, as moving the cup too vigorously can easily cause bruising. The pressure should be light and slow, and the cup should only be moved in one direction, not back and forth.Fire cupping can be performed as stationary or flash cupping, and disinfection should be done beforehand. Then, use a clean cotton ball soaked in 95% alcohol, ensuring it is wrung out to prevent dripping. Be careful not to burn the child when igniting.Warm the cup until it is close to skin temperature.Flash cupping should be done quickly, with the cup touching the skin for about one second before removing it.If the cotton ball catches fire or the flame turns slightly yellow, it indicates that the alcohol has burned out; blow it out and re-soak it in alcohol. Then switch to a new cup, warm it, and perform flash cupping until the skin feels slightly warm. The main effect of flash cupping is warming and tonifying. It can be used for conditions like wind-cold colds with cough and clear nasal discharge. Stationary cupping is more effective for cooling, such as for wind-heat colds with cough, heat excess, or food stagnation. After warming the cup, find the corresponding acupoint and apply the cup, adjusting the duration based on the child’s tolerance, which can be a few seconds or 10-20 seconds.Do not force the cup to produce bruising.Always ensure that alcohol and flames do not burn the child; check the cup’s temperature with your hand. Inexperienced parents should practice on themselves before performing on their child; safety first.
