Poria, also known as Yun Ling, Fu Ling, and Song Ling, is a commonly used medicinal and edible herb, historically regarded as one of the “Eight Treasures of Traditional Chinese Medicine” and is listed as a superior herb in the “Shennong Bencao Jing” (Shennong’s Classic of Materia Medica).
Poria is the dried sclerotium of the fungus Poria cocos. Its dark brown outer skin is called Poria peel, which is used for promoting urination and reducing swelling; the internal light red part is called Chi Fu Ling (Red Poria), used for clearing heat and promoting dampness; the internal white part is known as Bai Fu Ling (White Poria), used for strengthening the spleen and draining dampness. It is important to note that Tu Fu Ling (Earth Poria) is completely different and belongs to the category of heat-clearing and detoxifying herbs, and should be treated differently.
Bai Fu Ling has a sweet and bland taste, and a neutral nature, with effects of promoting urination, draining dampness, strengthening the spleen, and calming the spirit. The “Yong Yao Xin Fa” (Principles of Medicinal Use) states, “Poria is the holy medicine for eliminating dampness.”

Poria has the effects of promoting urination, draining dampness, strengthening the spleen and stomach, and calming the spirit. Its neutral nature and slightly sweet taste nourish without being greasy, and promote without harming fluids, making it suitable for treating edema, reduced urination, spleen deficiency with poor appetite, loose stools, and restlessness.

Dietary Recipes with Poria

Poria Cake
Ingredients: Bai Fu Ling (White Poria) 250-500g, rice flour 250-500g, white sugar 250-500g.
Method: First, grind Bai Fu Ling into a fine powder, then mix Bai Fu Ling powder, rice flour, and white sugar in a bowl, add water to form a batter, and cook in a frying pan over low heat to make thin pancakes.
Effects: It has the effect of strengthening the spleen and benefiting qi. Suitable for elderly individuals for daily health maintenance, and those with qi deficiency and weakness, or loose stools.

Poria Barley Congee
Ingredients: Poria 30g, barley sprouts 30g, japonica rice 100g.
Method: Wash the above ingredients and place them in a clay pot with an appropriate amount of water, bring to a boil over high heat, then simmer on low heat to make congee.
Effects: It has the effects of tonifying the middle and benefiting qi, strengthening the spleen and draining dampness. Suitable for those with loose stools, diarrhea, and post-meal bloating.

Poria Chestnut Congee
Ingredients: Poria 15g, chestnuts 15 pieces, japonica rice 100g.
Method: Remove the shell and skin from the chestnuts, and place them with the washed Poria and japonica rice in a clay pot with an appropriate amount of water, bring to a boil over high heat, then simmer on low heat to make congee.
Effects: It has the effects of strengthening the spleen, tonifying the kidneys, and draining dampness to stop diarrhea. Suitable for those with spleen and stomach weakness, reduced appetite, and loose stools.

Poria and Chrysanthemum Soup with Lean Meat
Ingredients: Poria 15g, dried chrysanthemum 10g, lean meat 500g, ginger 5 slices.
Method: First, rinse Poria and dried chrysanthemum; clean the lean meat and cut it into large pieces, blanch in boiling water to remove blood; in a pot, add clean water, bring to a boil, then add Poria, lean meat, and ginger slices, boil for 20 minutes, then simmer for an hour, add chrysanthemum, and simmer for another 20 minutes, seasoning with salt to taste.
Effects: It benefits the spleen and stomach, calms the spirit, and is suitable for those with spleen and stomach weakness, irritability, insomnia, and poor appetite with constipation.
