Phlegm-damp constitution is currently a common type of constitution. So how can one identify if they have a phlegm-damp constitution?
What is phlegm-damp? Phlegm-damp is a concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). “Phlegm” can be divided into tangible phlegm and intangible phlegm. Tangible phlegm can be understood as the phlegm produced during coughing, while TCM usually refers to intangible phlegm.
Seventy percent of the human body is composed of water, referred to as jinye (body fluids) in TCM. It transports nutrients to various parts of the body while also carrying waste out of the body. If the circulation of jinye is disrupted, it will first lead to dampness. When dampness cannot be properly transformed, it will condense into phlegm. Therefore, the essence of phlegm-damp is a part of jinye, but it manifests in a pathological state.
Characteristics of phlegm-damp: Phlegm-damp is a condition that affects the entire body. It is characterized by heaviness and stickiness, and once formed in the body, it is difficult to eliminate. Prolonged presence in the body may lead to malignant changes, and phlegm-damp is closely related to the occurrence and development of tumors.
So how can one identify if they have a phlegm-damp constitution?
Look at Obesity
In normal individuals, a fat abdomen does not feel bloated and does not cause significant discomfort.
In those with a phlegm-damp constitution, obesity is characterized by a full and soft abdomen, with a feeling of heaviness in the body.
Look at Stool
Individuals with a phlegm-damp constitution often have sticky stools.
Look at the Tongue
Those with a phlegm-damp constitution usually have a thick and greasy tongue coating and may experience a bitter taste in the mouth.
Causes of Phlegm-Damp Constitution
Love for Cold Foods: Long-term consumption of cold foods harms the spleen and stomach, primarily damaging the spleen yang. When the spleen’s function weakens, the circulation of jinye is disrupted, leading to phlegm-damp;
Prolonged Sitting: Movement promotes yang. Normal circulation of qi and blood requires movement; prolonged sitting can damage spleen yang, resulting in phlegm-damp;
Alcohol Abuse: Alcohol is considered a rich flavor in medicine, and rich and fatty flavors are most harmful to spleen yang. Long-term alcohol abuse can weaken spleen yang, disrupt jinye, and lead to phlegm-damp;
Frequent Consumption of Fatty Meat: Regularly eating fatty meat harms spleen yang, which over time can lead to a phlegm-damp constitution.
Regulating Phlegm-Damp Constitution
Environmental Influence:
It is not advisable to live in a damp environment; during rainy seasons, one should be cautious of dampness invading the body.
Dietary Regulation:
Reduce consumption of rich and fatty foods, and avoid overeating. Increase intake of vegetables and fruits, especially those that strengthen the spleen and eliminate dampness, such as white radish, water chestnut, seaweed, jellyfish, onion, jujube, lentils, coix seed, adzuki beans, and cabbage.
Exercise:
Individuals with a phlegm-damp constitution are often overweight and easily fatigued, so it is essential to maintain regular physical exercise. Walking, jogging, ball games, swimming, and various forms of dance are all good options. The amount of activity should gradually increase to transform loose flesh into firmness.
