As spring blossoms, social media is filled with photos of peach blossoms, pear blossoms, and cherry blossoms… but for those with allergies, it can be a nightmare.
Cupping in the Triangle Area
If you are suffering from skin allergies and unbearable itching, and are concerned about developing a dependency on topical steroids, you can perform cupping in the itch-relief triangle area located above the knee joint.
This area contains three acupuncture points: Qū Quán (曲泉) – the He Point of the Liver Meridian, Xuè Hǎi (血海) – the Blood Sea Point of the Spleen Meridian, and Bǎi Chóng Wō (百虫窝) – an Extra Point.
Since the liver governs blood storage and the spleen governs blood regulation, the combination of Qū Quán and Xuè Hǎi can nourish the blood, allowing the wind to dissipate as the blood flows, thus alleviating itching.
Bǎi Chóng Wō is an empirically effective point for relieving itching, located along the pathway of the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian, and has the effect of invigorating blood and stopping itching, which can quickly relieve itching when combined with Xuè Hǎi.
If cupping is not convenient, you can also use hot compresses or gua sha on these points.
- Xuè Hǎi (血海): Bend the knee, located on the inner thigh, 2 cun above the medial end of the patella, at the bulge of the inner head of the quadriceps muscle.
- Bǎi Chóng Wō (百虫窝): Bend the knee, located on the inner thigh, 3 cun above the medial end of the patella.
- Qū Quán (曲泉): Located on the inner side of the knee, at the end of the inner transverse crease when the knee is bent, at the depression just anterior to the tendons of the semitendinosus and semimembranosus muscles.
Tip
Cupping: Also known as sliding cupping, involves applying a layer of petroleum jelly or other lubricant to the skin or the rim of the cup before suctioning the cup onto the selected area of skin. Then, hold the cup with the right hand while using the left hand to pull the skin taut, moving the cup up, down, left, and right over the area until the skin becomes red, congested, or even bruised, at which point the cup can be removed.
