Warm 2017: Healing with Acupuncture and the Aroma of Mugwort

He is young and accomplished, bearing the dual responsibilities of administrative management of a department and being a leading figure in his field; he holds multiple positions, but his only goal is to safeguard the health of the people! This issue takes you into the world of Zhao Qingbo, Assistant Director, Head of the Medical Department, and Director of the Rehabilitation Department.

Zhao Qingbo graduated from Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Over the past twelve years, he has progressed from an ordinary doctor to the head of a department, becoming a pillar of strength in the hospital and a promising young physician.

Upon first meeting Director Zhao, one is struck by his scholarly demeanor, but as you get to know him, you will be amazed by his superb medical skills and profound inner qualities. He has considerable insights into the treatment of chronic diseases, cervical spondylosis, and lumbar spondylosis, and has developed a unique acupuncture technique focusing on hand acupuncture points, complemented by herbal formulas, which has received unanimous recognition from patients for its clinical effectiveness.

Under his leadership, the department continues to grow and expand, becoming a well-known brand department in Zhangwu and surrounding areas. In every upper-level inspection and evaluation, the Rehabilitation Department is a key focus, and leaders have given high praise for the department’s current development status, future plans, and overall strength. Our Rehabilitation Department has now developed into a specialized (Acupuncture and Rehabilitation) department recognized as a characteristic TCM specialty in Liaoning Province during the 13th Five-Year Plan, and a regional TCM rehabilitation center. The modern rehabilitation treatment room of the Rehabilitation Department is the earliest established, largest in scale, and most advanced rehabilitation base in the county, with equipment synchronized with the Liaoning TCM Rehabilitation Center, and has also become an important platform supporting the hospital’s development.

Every morning is the busiest time for Director Zhao, with patients continuously seeking his treatment. After completing acupuncture for one patient, he moves on to perform moxibustion for another, and soon a nurse comes to inform him of another patient waiting for diagnosis. He always manages to calmly attend to each patient seeking treatment. Among the patients entering and exiting his office, many come in grimacing in pain, but leave with relaxed brows and smiles, relieved from their ailments.

During a recent free clinic in the countryside, he treated a patient with a herniated disc. When the patient arrived, she was supporting her waist with her left hand and using a crutch with her right. After understanding her condition, Director Zhao performed acupuncture treatment at specific points and informed her that the pain would significantly lessen after treatment. The patient initially showed skepticism (later expressing that she had little hope for this visit, merely trying it out, as she knew her condition was due to years of hard work), but after 20 minutes, when Director Zhao removed all the acupuncture needles and allowed her to walk, she was overjoyed, as her lower back pain and leg numbness had greatly improved, and she no longer needed to rely on her crutch to walk, exclaiming the wonders of TCM.

Zhao Qingbo has a deep affection for Traditional Chinese Medicine. Whether for the development of his department or the hospital, he exhausts his brain to contribute ideas and plans, striving to let TCM shine and benefit more people. He has published a paper in a national journal titled “A Brief Discussion on the Syndrome Differentiation and Acupuncture Treatment of Shoulder Periarthritis.” He said, “I hope patients can truly benefit from TCM, spending less money to get well. I am responsible for my patients, and even more so for the hospital. Healing is not divided between TCM and Western medicine; it is all about pure medicine. I hope to revitalize TCM, and we in my department will lead the way.”

In his white coat, he is a representation of many good doctors, embodying integrity and courage. With his superb medical skills and quality service, he brings health and peace to the masses, adhering to the simple and sincere pursuit of a healer’s heart, which is the most fundamental aspiration of a TCM practitioner.
