Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a treasure of Chinese culture, having made significant contributions to the health of our people over thousands of years. The dosage form is the manifestation of TCM, representing the final form of the product and closely related to the preparation and administration of TCM.
The Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon) is the first systematic medical classic in China, which includes various dosage forms such as decoctions (tang), pills (wan), powders (san), elixirs (dan), and topical preparations (tuji), integrating drugs with their forms and pioneering the development of TCM dosage forms. The Shennong Bencao Jing (Shennong’s Classic of Materia Medica) is the first monograph on materia medica in China, emphasizing: “Some medicines are suitable for pills, some for powders, some for decoction, some for wine infusion, some for paste decoction, and some can be used in multiple forms, while others should not be used in decoctions or wines, depending on the properties of the medicine, which should not be violated.”
Different medicinal properties require different dosage forms to achieve the desired therapeutic effects. The traditional dosage forms in TCM include pills (wan), powders (san), pastes (gao), elixirs (dan), wines (jiu), tinctures (lu), decoctions (tang), and tablets (ding).
