Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) decoctions are characterized by their simplicity, convenience, effectiveness, and affordability. The correct method of taking these decoctions can yield significant benefits. Below are the methods for taking decoctions:
1. Method of Taking
1. Warm intake: After preparing the decoction, allow it to cool to 30~37℃ before taking. This method is suitable for most TCM decoctions.2. Hot intake: For medications treating wind-cold colds, they should be taken hot to achieve the purpose of inducing sweating. Medications that dispel cold and promote circulation are more effective when taken hot.3. Cold intake: Decoctions can be taken cold after cooling. This is suitable for heat-clearing and detoxifying medications, especially in summer.
2. Timing of Intake
1. Before meals: This usually refers to taking the decoction 30~60 minutes before meals. Medications for intestinal diseases should be taken before meals, as the liquid can directly contact the digestive tract mucosa in an empty stomach, allowing for quicker passage through the gastrointestinal tract and better absorption.
2. After meals: This usually refers to taking the decoction 30 minutes after meals. Stomach-tonifying medications and those that may irritate the gastrointestinal tract should be taken after meals to reduce damage to the gastrointestinal mucosa. Medications with higher toxicity should also be taken after meals to avoid rapid absorption and side effects.
3. Before bed: Some calming and sleep-inducing medications can be taken half an hour before bed, as this is when the concentration of the medication in the blood is highest, allowing for maximum efficacy.
4. On an empty stomach: Tonic herbs should be taken on an empty stomach for optimal absorption. Anti-parasitic medications should also be taken on an empty stomach to allow the medication to act directly on the parasites in the intestines, achieving better results.
3. Dosage
Decoctions are generally taken twice a day, divided into morning and evening doses, with each dose being approximately 200ml.
4. Dietary Restrictions
During the period of taking decoctions, it is generally advised to avoid eating raw, cold, or cool foods. Spicy foods should also be avoided, as well as fish and other foods that may provoke reactions. These foods are difficult to digest and can irritate the gastrointestinal tract, affecting the absorption of the medication and thus its efficacy.
