Understanding Hand Gua Sha in Traditional Chinese Medicine

It is well known that the ear represents an inverted human body, with the earlobe corresponding to the head, and the ear is filled with acupuncture points. Similarly, the hands are also covered with holographic acupuncture points. The holographic theory suggests that corresponding reflex zones for various body parts can be found on the hands. By examining the palm, we can gain insights into diseases and the overall health of the body. Additionally, by pressing and scraping the corresponding areas, we can achieve a therapeutic effect on the body.

The Origin of Hand Gua Sha

The Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon) discusses the relationship between the palms and the five internal organs: Heart governs the blood vessels; when the blood is abundant, the palms appear red and shiny; Spleen governs the muscles; when the spleen qi is sufficient, the hand muscles are robust and flexible; Liver governs the tendons, and its manifestation is in the nails; when the liver is harmonious and blood circulation is smooth, the shape and movement of the fingers are normal, and the nails are moist; Lungs govern the distribution of defensive qi and the warmth of the flesh; when lung qi is unobstructed, the palms are well-hydrated and appear normal; Kidneys govern the storage of essence and bones; when kidney essence is abundant, the palms are strong and firm, and grip strength is normal. These discussions are based on the fundamental theories of the internal organs and meridians, thus scraping the hands can serve a health-preserving and regulating function.
