What is Cupping?
The cupping technique uses cups as tools, employing methods such as combustion, suction, and steam to create negative pressure inside the cup. This allows the cup to adhere to acupuncture points (腧穴, shùxué) or corresponding areas on the body, causing local skin congestion or bruising, thus serving as an external treatment method for disease prevention and treatment. It was historically known as the horn method (角法, jiǎofǎ) or suction tube method.
What is Flash Cupping?
Flash cupping is a type of cupping therapy where the cup is applied and then immediately removed, repeating this process multiple times until the skin becomes reddened. Flash cupping is suitable for areas where the muscles are relatively relaxed, suction is not tight, or where it is difficult to leave the cup in place, as well as for patients with numbness or functional decline in the skin.
What is Sliding Cupping?
Sliding cupping involves applying an appropriate amount of lubricant to the rim of the cup and the affected area. By utilizing the heat from combustion to expel air from the cup, negative pressure is created, allowing the cup to adhere to the skin’s acupuncture points. The cup is then moved back and forth over the affected area, resulting in skin congestion or bruising.
Effects: Relaxing muscles and promoting circulation, dispelling wind and dampness, alleviating cold and pain, and regulating yin and yang.
Indications: Neck, shoulder, waist, and leg pain, rheumatic pain, and externally contracted diseases. Different cupping techniques and locations are selected based on the specific condition.
