Traditional Chinese Medicine Gāofāng (Pastes)

Commonly known as: Qióng chī wán, fù hē tāng, and gāofāng used by emperors and high officials.

This means that in ancient times, sick people, the poor took pills, the rich drank soups, and emperors and high officials used gāofāng preparations.

Gāofāng, also known as gāo (pastes) or gāo zī, originated in the Han and Tang dynasties and flourished in the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is one of the eight ancient dosage forms in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which include pills, powders, pastes, elixirs, wines, tinctures, soups, and tablets.

Based on different body constitutions and clinical manifestations, gāofāng is established with specific herbal formulas, carefully prepared through decoction, concentration, and the addition of auxiliary materials to create a thick semi-liquid or gel-like dosage form. It generally consists of about 20 to 30 types of Chinese herbs, providing excellent nourishing effects. Traditional gāofāng is stored in porcelain jars (pots, bowls), which are prone to mold. Modern single-dose packaging allows for one bag to be taken at a time, facilitating long-term storage, portability, and convenient logistics, making it the preferred treatment form for chronic disease patients. Clinically, it is newly used for conditions such as hypertension in youth, depression, insomnia, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and its complications.

Four Major Features of Dàlóng Medical Clinic’s Gāofāng

1. 【Famous Herbs】 Selection of authentic medicinal materials; Authentic medicinal materials, also known as local medicinal materials, are a specialized term for high-quality and pure medicinal materials. As the ancients said: “All herbs, plants, and insects produced in their respective regions lose their properties if removed from their origin.” TCM has always placed great importance on the use of authentic medicinal materials, such as Dāngguī (Angelica) from Gansu, Gǒuqǐ zǐ (Goji Berry) from Ningxia, and Huánglián (Coptis) from Sichuan. To ensure the efficacy of gāofāng, our clinic insists on selecting authentic medicinal materials, with each ingredient carefully selected and processed with meticulous techniques, ensuring high quality.

2. 【Famous Methods】 Strict operation and exquisite craftsmanship in the preparation process; For thousands of years, TCM has accumulated rich theoretical knowledge and processing experience in the preparation of gāofāng. The preparation of gāofāng involves several processes including honey refining, soaking, decocting, concentrating, collecting the paste, and storage. Our clinic has purchased modern gāofāng production equipment (liquid vacuum concentration decoction machine), which allows for low-temperature concentration, reducing the loss of components caused by prolonged heating, combining traditional and modern techniques to ensure the efficacy of gāofāng through strict and exquisite preparation processes.

3. 【Famous Ingredients】 Selection of superior auxiliary materials; The selection of auxiliary materials is one of the key aspects in the preparation of gāofāng. Our clinic does not add any preservatives during the preparation process, and commonly used auxiliary materials (yellow wine, honey, rock candy, xylitol, maltose, etc.) are all certified by national quality standards, resulting in a mildly sweet taste and good mouthfeel, suitable even for diabetic patients.

4. 【Convenience】 Simple packaging, easy to carry; Traditional gāofāng is stored in porcelain jars (pots, bowls), which are prone to mold due to the long duration of use. New single-dose packaging allows for one bag to be taken at a time, facilitating long-term storage, preventing spoilage, and making it easy to carry.
