Question
The relationship of the Five Elements in Daoism: Generating and Overcoming?
Dao
Gold, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth are the Five Elements.
Generating relationships are: Metal generates Water, Water generates Wood, Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal.
Overcoming relationships are: Metal overcomes Wood, Wood overcomes Earth, Earth overcomes Water, Water overcomes Fire, Fire overcomes Metal.
Daoism also explains the Five Organs of the human body using the “Five Elements”: the Kidney corresponds to Water, the Heart corresponds to Fire, the Liver corresponds to Wood, the Lung corresponds to Metal, and the Spleen corresponds to Earth. The so-called “generating” is: Kidney Qi generates Liver Qi, Liver Qi generates Heart Qi, Heart Qi generates Spleen Qi, Spleen Qi generates Lung Qi, Lung Qi generates Kidney Qi; the so-called “overcoming” is: Kidney Qi overcomes Heart Qi, Heart Qi overcomes Lung Qi, Lung Qi overcomes Liver Qi, Liver Qi overcomes Spleen Qi, Spleen Qi overcomes Kidney Qi.
The relationship between the “Five Elements” and the “Five Directions”: Wood governs the East, Fire governs the South, Metal governs the West, Water governs the North, and Earth governs the Center.
