In the cold winter, it is essential to keep warm, “Dispelling cold means warming” is the general principle of winter health. However, it is inevitable that some people will be harmed by cold pathogens, experiencing stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting, chest tightness, and even coughs caused by cold pathogens.
To cope with the arrival of cold waves, today I will introduce a commonly used Chinese herb, “Dried Ginger” (Gan Jiang), which has a spicy taste and warm nature, and is associated with the Spleen, Stomach, Kidney, Heart, and Lung meridians. It can warm the middle, disperse cold, return yang, and warm the lungs to transform phlegm.
Why choose dried ginger instead of fresh ginger? Fresh ginger is good for treating cold pathogens invading the surface of the body, while dried ginger targets cold pathogens that penetrate directly into the organs, effectively dispelling cold trapped in the organs and meridians.
02Using Dried Ginger for Spleen and Stomach Cold
◎Image authorized by Shetu NetworkCold in the Spleen and Stomach is generally caused by two reasons: first, cold pathogens directly invade, harming the yang qi of the Spleen and Stomach, leading to “Spleen and Stomach Excess Cold Syndrome.” Recently, with the drop in temperature, it is common for wind-cold pathogens to directly harm the Spleen and Stomach.
On the other hand, improper diet, prolonged consumption of cold and cool foods, harms the yang qi of the Spleen and Stomach, resulting in “Spleen and Stomach Deficiency Cold Syndrome.”Dried ginger warms the middle and disperses cold, suitable for both deficiency and excess, making it a key herb for warming the middle jiao.
When there is cold in the Spleen and Stomach, the functions of digestion and warmth are impaired, leading to cold pain in the abdomen, vomiting, and diarrhea. The treatment principle is to warm the middle and disperse cold, tonifying the Spleen and harmonizing the Stomach. Here are two small herbal combinations to recommend:
🔸If vomiting is caused by Spleen and Stomach cold syndrome, Dried Ginger + Pinellia (Jiang Ban Xia), where dried ginger warms the middle and disperses cold, and Pinellia stops vomiting by descending the qi, together they warm the middle and stop vomiting.
🔸If diarrhea is caused by Spleen and Stomach cold syndrome, Dried Ginger + Fried Atractylodes (Chao Bai Zhu), which warms the middle while tonifying the Spleen and resolving dampness, stopping diarrhea.

Coronary heart disease is prevalent in winter, often due to lower temperatures and the onset of cold, or worsening of existing conditions. Friends with such risks must ensure to warm the yang and disperse cold in winter; do not wait until discomfort arises to warm the yang, you can try this small tea recipe:
🔸Small Tea Recipe:Dried Ginger 5g, Fresh Ginger 3g, 3 Red Dates (broken), appropriate amount of brown sugar, boil in water for 10 minutes as a tea, which can have preventive health effects.
Dried ginger not only warms the middle jiao of the Spleen and Stomach but also warms the Heart Yang, ensuring smooth circulation of the heart vessels; Dried Ginger + Fresh Ginger can expel the stagnation and cold pathogens from the body, allowing qi and blood to flow smoothly.

Treating Cold Phlegm Cough
Dried ginger enters the Lung meridian, dispersing cold and transforming phlegm. Cold phlegm retained in the lungs can cause cough, producing thin, white, foamy sputum that is difficult to resolve, often combined with Schisandra (Wu Wei Zi).
Dried ginger warms the lungs, while Schisandra astringes the lungs; together they stop cough and wheezing, effectively assisting in the treatment of cough caused by cold phlegm in the lungs. Both “Xiao Qing Long Tang” and “Ling Gan Wu Wei Jiang Xin Tang” utilize these two herbs.
If you have not paid attention to warmth in winter and develop a cough after getting cold, you can try Dried Ginger + Green Onion Roots, steeped in water to drink; if the cough caused by cold pathogens lasts longer, with white phlegm and itchy throat, you can use Dried Ginger + Schisandra steeped in water.
A single herb, Dried Ginger, cleverly combined, can solve common health issues simply and effectively, truly remarkable~
