In the land of Tianzhong, Lian Qiao is one of the most common flowering shrubs and is among the first flowers to bloom in early spring. After the long winter, despite the wind and light chill, it brings the message of spring with its golden blossoms. Lian Qiao blooms before its leaves in early spring, with a delicate fragrance and vibrant golden color, making it charming and lovely. The ancient poem “Guan Ju” describes Lian Qiao flowers as “A thousand steps of Lian Qiao untouched by dust, the fragrance descends lazily painting the spring’s delicate brows.”
Lian Qiao is first recorded in the “Shen Nong’s Herbal Classic,” with a bitter taste and slightly cold nature. It enters the Lung, Heart, and Small Intestine meridians. It has functions of clearing heat and detoxifying, reducing swelling and dispersing nodules, and dispersing wind-heat. It is used for carbuncles, lymphadenitis, mastitis, erysipelas, and wind-heat colds. Its efficacy has been praised by physicians throughout history, with Ming Dynasty’s Li Shizhen even calling Lian Qiao the “Holy Medicine for Sores.” For thousands of years, Lian Qiao has been one of the widely used and cost-effective medicinal materials.
Lian Qiao belongs to the Oleaceae family and the Forsythia genus, flowering from March to April and fruiting from July to September. The medicinal use of Lian Qiao is derived from its dried fruit. In autumn, the fruit is harvested when it is initially ripe and still green, impurities are removed, steamed, and dried, known as “Green Lian Qiao,” with the best being those that are green and uncracked; when the fruit is fully ripe, it is harvested, dried, and impurities removed, known as “Old Lian Qiao,” with the best being those that are yellow, with large petals and thick shells. Lian Qiao fruit is often combined with Jin Yin Hua (Honeysuckle) in medicinal preparations, such as “Wei C Yin Qiao Pian” and “Shuang Huang Lian Oral Liquid,” which have broad-spectrum antibacterial effects. Jin Yin Hua can cool the blood and stop dysentery, with a stronger inhibitory effect on typhoid bacilli than Lian Qiao; Lian Qiao can clear heart heat, with a better inhibitory effect on dysentery bacilli and influenza viruses than Jin Yin Hua.
Lian Qiao is a treasure, as its entire plant is useful for greening, while its tender leaves can be made into Lian Qiao tea. The health benefits of Lian Qiao leaves are increasingly recognized, and modern pharmacological studies show that Lian Qiao leaves have protective effects on the liver, anti-lipid oxidation, anti-aging, immune regulation, and enhanced stress resistance. Making tea from Lian Qiao leaves has a promising future.
