Under normal circumstances, the yin and yang, qi, and blood in the human body are in a balanced and stable state. However, there can be instances of yin-yang imbalance. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), patients’ constitutions are differentiated based on various causes, such as yin deficiency and qi deficiency, leading to classifications like yin deficiency constitution and qi deficiency constitution. Different health preservation methods are required for different constitutions.
Among various constitutions, the yin deficiency constitution may lead to feelings of irritability. Therefore, when practicing health preservation, attention should be paid to the following five points. So, how can one determine if they have a yin deficiency constitution?
Individuals with a yin deficiency constitution are generally slender, and especially after noon, they may exhibit a flushed complexion, dry throat, feelings of restlessness, and heat in the palms and soles. Additionally, they may experience abnormal bowel movements, such as dry stools and yellow, concentrated urine. A common characteristic of these individuals is a preference for cold drinks.
1. Mental Nourishment
Individuals with a yin deficiency constitution often have an irritable temperament, frequently feeling depressed and prone to anger. This is due to the excess of yang fire disturbing the spirit. Therefore, those with a yin deficiency constitution should cultivate self-restraint and develop a calm and composed demeanor. In daily life and work, they should avoid conflicts with others, reduce emotional stimuli, and adopt a moderated lifestyle.2. Environmental AdjustmentSeasonal changes can significantly affect individuals with a yin deficiency constitution. They often feel heat in their palms and soles, dry throat, and prefer a cool living environment. During hot weather, those with yin deficiency may feel particularly uncomfortable, so they should take care to avoid high temperatures during hot seasons. The Huangdi Neijing mentions “nourishing yin in autumn and winter,” which is especially important for those with a yin deficiency constitution, particularly in autumn when the climate is dry, which can further damage the body’s yin fluids and exacerbate the condition.3. Dietary Care
Everyone needs to consume grains, but for individuals with a yin deficiency constitution, it is essential to follow the principle of “nourishing yin and restraining yang.” They should eat light foods such as sugarcane, sesame, glutinous rice, and tofu, and can moderately consume nourishing porridge, such as lily porridge and yam porridge. Among these, yam is an excellent herb for nourishing yin and generating fluids. Additionally, spicy and hot foods should be minimized, such as pepper and ginger.4. Physical ExerciseIndividuals with yin deficiency should avoid intense exercise and focus on nourishing the liver and kidneys. Suitable activities include Tai Chi and Bagua Zhang, which involve gentle movements.5. Medicinal Nourishmentfor Restoration
Individuals with yin deficiency must replenish what is lacking in their bodies. Therefore, it is essential to use TCM herbs that nourish yin and clear heat, such as Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon), Huang Jing (Polygonatum), Yu Zhu (Polygonatum), and Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berries), all of which have the effect of nourishing yin and clearing heat. A commonly used formula for nourishing yin is the Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia (Liu Wei Di Huang Wan), which contains Shu Di Huang (Rehmannia), Shan Zhu Yu (Cornus), and Shan Yao (Dioscorea), known for their strong yin-nourishing effects.Since individuals with a yin deficiency constitution may have different organs affected, the treatment methods vary accordingly. For example, those with lung yin deficiency typically use Bai He Guo Jin Tang (Lily Bulb Decoction), while those with liver yin deficiency may use Yi Guan Jian (Liver Nourishing Decoction). Here comes the advertisement timePublic account recommendationsProduct recommendations“Star mark us, let’s grow togetherClick the bottom rightto see, click the top right【…】Sharing is the best support for us
