Managing Liver Qi Stagnation: A Spring Guide to Nourishing Liver Qi and Blood

Today marks the beginning of spring, a wonderful opportunity to regulate the constitution of liver qi stagnation.

During this time, I have noticed an overwhelming number of individuals suffering from liver qi stagnation!

How can you determine if you have a constitution of liver qi stagnation? It is quite easy to assess.

In our body, there is a meridian called the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. If there are symptoms such as distension, pain, lumps, or discomfort along this meridian, it is highly likely that you have a constitution of liver qi stagnation.

As shown in the image, the red line indicates the path of the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian.

Now, let’s look at the areas of our body where the gallbladder meridian runs.

It traverses the outer chest, the hypochondriac region, the shoulder and neck area, the forehead, the lower back, and the lower abdomen…

Therefore, when I assess whether someone has a constitution of liver qi stagnation, I often ask them two questions:

1. Do you experience breast distension or pain before or during your menstrual period?

2. Do you have any discomfort in your shoulders and neck?

If the answer to both questions is affirmative, it is very likely that they have a constitution of liver qi stagnation.

Additionally, I will ask if they often have cold hands and feet, feel easily irritated, or experience negative emotions. I will also examine their tongue (individuals with liver qi stagnation typically have a red tip and a dark purple tongue body).

Individuals can also self-assess to see if they belong to the constitution of liver qi stagnation.

Now is the perfect time of year, as it is spring. If you identify with this constitution of liver qi stagnation, what are you waiting for? Seize this precious time of the year to properly regulate your body!

——Stretch Your Body

In the morning, open the curtains to let the sunlight into your room. Start with a big stretch, extending your arms, neck, and lower back as far as possible. Imagine you are like a tree that has had plenty of water and nutrients, stretching tall and proud, becoming the most beautiful tree in the forest.

If you have time, you can do half an hour of yoga in the morning, whether it’s Tree Pose or Cat Pose, as long as it allows you to stretch your body fully.

Go outdoors to connect with nature and soak up the sun.

The spring sun is warm and gentle, and the feeling of the spring breeze on your face is soft and pleasant. The most convenient, inexpensive, and natural way to nourish the liver in spring is to find a sunny, warm day and engage in outdoor activities.

Connect with nature, observe the birds, admire the flowers, touch the tender shoots that have just sprouted, and listen to the gentle flow of spring water. This beautiful nature is the best prescription for soothing the liver.

If you often strain your eyes and wear glasses, take advantage of the spring to find an open space and fly a kite. Your eyes will feel relaxed as they follow the distant kite. Flying a kite in spring is the best way to nourish the liver and improve eyesight.

——Brew a Cup of Flower Tea

Drinking flower tea that soothes the liver and relieves stagnation in spring doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes I see individuals asking me for complex tea recipes, and I think, it’s too troublesome. While it may be good, can you stick with it? If you can’t maintain it, then no matter how good the dietary remedy is, it will be in vain; inconsistent efforts yield no results.

Your liver qi did not become stagnant overnight, and similarly, relieving liver stagnation is not something that can be resolved in a day.

In spring, drink rose tea; a simple brew of rose is sufficient. It will fill the entire spring with fragrance. Rose is warm in nature, and if you are concerned about it causing heat, you can add a few mulberries. Rose and mulberry tea is a simple yet effective beauty and menstrual regulation tea.

——Tap and Pat to Boost Your Yang Qi

In spring, the body tends to itch easily because it is a season of rising yang energy. Your body’s yang energy is breaking through the yin obstruction, and during this process, the righteous and evil energies clash, causing qi and blood to impact the vessel walls, which can lead to skin reactions. You don’t need to worry too much about the meridians or directions; just use a tapping tool to tap wherever it itches, helping the qi and blood and yang energy to flourish.

These itchy areas can also be treated with guasha. I find that a gentle scrape can bring out red marks, which helps to clear the meridians and can also help to release heat from the body. After scraping, the itching will subside, and the skin will feel warm and relaxed.

——In Spring, Not Only Soothe Liver Qi but Also Supplement Liver Blood.

The previous methods discussed were for soothing liver qi, but as night falls, it is time to supplement liver blood.

If you want to soothe liver qi and nourish the liver, it is not enough to just relieve liver stagnation; you must also supplement liver blood. Insufficient liver blood can also lead to liver stagnation. Some individuals with liver qi stagnation symptoms do not improve because they focus solely on soothing the liver while neglecting the blood, treating only the symptoms without addressing the root cause.

Postpartum women are particularly prone to liver qi stagnation due to insufficient liver blood, which affects the smooth flow of liver qi.

Supplementing liver blood is the fundamental approach to regulating liver qi stagnation!

About an hour after dinner, when your stomach is slightly empty, you can brew a cup of mulberry syrup. Mulberries are excellent for nourishing liver blood and can also aid sleep. If you don’t have mulberry syrup, a small handful of dried mulberries will suffice. Take your time to chew slowly and swallow gently.

To put it simply, liver blood is the root. With a strong root, liver qi can grow straight and healthy like a young sapling.

Spring is here; it’s time to strengthen your roots!

——Indulge in a Luxurious Rose Tea Foot Soak at Night.

I have long recommended adding a few rose petals to your foot soak or bath. Many individuals have given me feedback saying, “Fairy, I did this, and my skin has improved greatly!”

Roses are truly wonderful; they can be used for tea and foot soaks. Your stomach will feel fragrant, and your feet will also smell delightful.

Some may think this is extravagant, but compared to spending hundreds or thousands on cosmetics, is it really that extravagant?

If you must call it indulgent, then indulge; as long as the money is spent wisely, it doesn’t feel extravagant.

Roses are very suitable for foot soaks because they are light, fragrant, and warm in nature, which can penetrate the skin and relieve stress, adjust emotions, and provide moisturizing and whitening effects on the skin.

Save some money on cosmetics this spring and try adding a few rose petals to your foot soak; your skin will tell you that this is not extravagant, but rather worthwhile.

However, when choosing roses, opt for those that are half-opened, as they contain more rose essential oil, and the active ingredients are more easily released.

——Don’t Forget to Massage the Four Gates Acupoints in Spring!

Many individuals enjoy looking at their phones or playing games before bed, which can significantly affect sleep.

If you want to sleep beautifully in spring, you need to put your phone away and give yourself a few minutes to massage the Four Gates acupoints.

The Four Gates acupoints are excellent for soothing liver qi and regulating the body’s qi mechanism. In modern society, many people suffer from qi stagnation:

We encounter many individuals with bad tempers, heavy resentment, depression, or suicidal thoughts; these are all signs of qi stagnation.

I highly recommend this set of acupoints. Some individuals have tried it, while others have not persisted, and some have completely disregarded it. While I feel sorry for them, I won’t force anyone.

To massage the Four Gates acupoints, start from the left Hegu to the right Hegu, and from the right Taichong to the left Taichong, and persist for several minutes.

In fact, using acupoints requires a unity of body and mind. If you hurriedly treat this as a task and then go back to gaming, it’s better not to do it at all.

When massaging acupoints, your mind should be calm. Push aside distractions, silence your phone, and while massaging, feel the changes in your body. Only when body and mind are unified can you achieve better results.

Spring is truly one of my favorite seasons and the best time for individuals with liver qi stagnation to regulate their bodies. If you identify with this constitution, take advantage of spring to improve your health!
