What is Warming Yang Moxibustion?
Warming Yang Moxibustion utilizes the vacuum pressure and heat of the Yang warming can to distribute warmth throughout the body via the Shenque point (神阙穴, shénquè), combining the effects of cupping, fire therapy, and moxibustion. This technique is safe and easy to perform, suitable for a wide range of individuals. Regular practice of Warming Yang Moxibustion can replenish the body’s Yang energy, enhance immunity, and significantly benefit health, making it a preferred TCM specialty therapy.

What are the benefits of Warming Yang Moxibustion?
1. Warming and unblocking meridians: If there is blockage in the meridians, symptoms such as body aches and weakness may occur. Warming Yang Moxibustion can help to unblock the meridians and promote the smooth flow of Qi and blood through its heat.
2. Dispelling cold pathogens: In TCM, dampness is considered a Yin pathogen, which is sticky in nature. Cupping can promote the expulsion of dampness through specific acupoints, accelerating the elimination of waste and toxins from the body, thus aiding recovery. Warming Yang Moxibustion also effectively dispels cold pathogens. If the body is heavily burdened with dampness and cold, it may lead to abdominal pain and discomfort. Warming Yang Moxibustion is beneficial for recovery.
3. Regulating menstruation: Women experiencing irregular menstruation or dysmenorrhea, or those with blood clots during menstruation, can benefit from Warming Yang Moxibustion.
4. Supporting the body’s vital energy: In TCM, supporting the body’s vital energy is not simply achieved by consuming “tonic herbs.” The “Zheng Qi” (正气) is the primary state of health maintenance or achievement, primarily through ensuring the smooth functioning of the organs and the unobstructed flow of Qi and blood. When the meridians and blood flow are normal, nutrition is adequate, and the body is protected from external pathogens, the internal organs are nourished, and the body’s vital energy is sufficient for health.

Contraindications for Warming Yang Moxibustion
○ Individuals with severe weakness of the heart, lungs, or kidneys.○ Patients with malignant tumors, hemangiomas, or cancer.○ Women during pregnancy or menstruation.○ Individuals with allergies to herbal medicine should use caution.
From the “Zhong Zang Jing”: “Yang is the foundation of life, Yin is the basis of death…” “Following Yang leads to life, following Yin leads to death.” “All life comes from Yang, and all death also comes from Yang. Without Yang, there can be no life; when Yang departs, death ensues.”
Yang energy governs life and death. It determines the level of health. Yang energy is the driving force of the human body! Yang energy is akin to the engine of a car!
Health preservation is about solidifying Yang, while treating diseases is about addressing cold!
Cold corresponds to the kidneys and can easily harm Yang energy, leading to bodily harm. This can manifest as lower back and knee pain, susceptibility to wind and cold, and frequent nighttime urination. Additionally, deficiency of kidney Yang can also harm kidney Yin, which is the foundation of all bodily fluids. Insufficient Yin leads to dryness, resulting in symptoms such as dry throat, irritability, constipation, and dark, scanty urine. Furthermore, as the kidneys “govern bones and produce marrow that nourishes the brain,” insufficient kidney Yin can lead to insomnia, forgetfulness, and dizziness.
Five major signs indicating the need to replenish Yang energy!
1: Insufficient Yang energy
Fear of cold, cold hands and feet, poor digestion, lack of energy, pale and swollen tongue, or with tooth marks, and a deep, thin pulse.
2: Insufficient Heart Yang
Cold sensation in the chest and heart area, palpitations with slight exertion, low mood, and lack of laughter.
3: Insufficient Liver Yang
Listlessness, lack of vitality, lack of initiative, indecisiveness.
4: Insufficient Spleen Yang
Poor appetite, abdominal distension, cold abdomen, frequent diarrhea, poor digestion, feeling stressed, prone to depression.
5: Insufficient Lung Yang
Prone to colds, shortness of breath, cough, especially stubborn cough, chronic asthma, emotional instability, lack of assertiveness!
6: Insufficient Kidney Yang
Lack of energy, dark complexion, cold hands and feet, cold sensation below the waist, frequent urination, especially at night, memory decline, and tendency to give up halfway through tasks.
Replenishing Yang and treating cold with moxibustion has remarkable effects!
Warming Yang moxibustion is very powerful in cultivating and solidifying the body’s Yang energy. The “Shennong Bencao Jing” records:“Mugwort has the effects of warming Yang, warming the womb, dispelling dampness, and promoting blood circulation.”
Famous TCM physician Li Shizhen recorded in the “Bencao Gangmu”: “Fresh mugwort is slightly bitter and too pungent, while cooked mugwort is slightly pungent and too bitter; fresh is warm and cooked is hot, both are pure Yang. It can draw on the true fire of the sun and restore the original Yang. Consuming it can expel the three Yin and eliminate all cold and dampness, transforming the cold and lethal energy into harmony.”
When moxibustion is applied, it penetrates the meridians and treats hundreds of diseases, bringing health to those suffering from chronic ailments; its efficacy is indeed great.
For elderly individuals with weak energy in the lower abdomen and fear of cold, the use of warming Yang moxibustion is unparalleled. Warming Yang moxibustion is particularly suitable for those with cold constitutions to strengthen Yang and enhance health, being safe, comfortable, and painless.
The two main groups most suitable for warming Yang moxibustion:
1: Individuals with Spleen and Kidney deficiency and insufficient Yang energy
Many people, especially women, may exhibit pale complexion, lack of energy, tendency to be quiet, excessive sleepiness, fear of cold, fatigue, lower back and leg weakness, and clear, frequent urination. These are all signs of Spleen and Kidney deficiency and insufficient Yang energy.
2: Individuals with Yin-Yang imbalance and prolonged exposure to cold
The practice of warming Yang moxibustion has a history of thousands of years in China. Warming Yang moxibustion involves using fire to transfer the medicinal properties of herbs through acupoints and meridians to the painful areas of the body, utilizing its warmth and medicinal effects to promote Qi and blood flow, support the body, and dispel pathogens. Warming Yang moxibustion has the effects of harmonizing Yin and Yang, warming the meridians, dispelling cold, and replenishing Qi, thus serving both therapeutic and health-preserving purposes.
Conditions such as shoulder periarthritis, cervical spondylosis, lumbar spondylosis, and other joint pain; as well as gynecological dysmenorrhea, cold womb; and asthma, chronic gastroenteritis, and other symptoms caused by Yin-Yang imbalance and prolonged cold exposure can benefit greatly from warming Yang moxibustion!
