Diseases of the Organs and Meridians: Chapter One
【Original Text】
Question: Why does the superior physician treat diseases before they occur? The master said: To treat diseases before they occur means to recognize the disease of the liver and understand that it transmits to the spleen. One should first strengthen the spleen. If the spleen is strong in all four seasons and does not suffer from evil influences, then there is no need to tonify it. If the intermediate physician does not understand the transmission, sees the liver disease, and does not resolve the spleen, but only treats the liver, this is incorrect.
For liver diseases, use sour herbs to tonify, assist with bitter herbs, and benefit with sweet herbs to adjust.
The classics say: “When there is deficiency, supplement what is lacking; when there is excess, reduce what is surplus.” This is the principle. Other organs follow this principle.

Humans are endowed with the five constants and grow according to the wind and climate. Although the wind and climate can nurture all things, they can also harm all things, just as water can float a boat but can also capsize it. If the five organs are in harmony, the person will be peaceful and healthy. If external evil winds invade, many will perish. There are countless diseases, but they can be categorized into three types: First, when the meridians are invaded by evil, entering the organs, causing internal issues; second, when the limbs and nine orifices are obstructed, causing external skin issues; third, injuries from rooms, sharp instruments, or insects and beasts. By understanding this, all diseases can be resolved.
If a person can cultivate caution and not allow evil winds to disturb the meridians; if the meridians are properly aligned and have not transmitted to the organs, then treat it. If the limbs feel heavy and stagnant, then use guiding exercises, breathing techniques, acupuncture, and topical ointments to prevent the nine orifices from being blocked. Furthermore, one should not violate the laws of nature or suffer from animal disasters; rooms should not be depleted, and food should be balanced in cold, hot, bitter, sour, spicy, and sweet flavors, ensuring the body does not weaken, so that diseases have no way to enter the pores. The pores are where the San Jiao (Triple Burner) connects with the original essence, and the principles are the patterns of the skin and organs.(2)

Question: If a patient has a complexion that can be seen on the face, what does it indicate? The master said: If the tip of the nose is blue, and there is abdominal pain with cold bitterness, it indicates death. One says that abdominal cold and bitter pain indicates death. If the tip of the nose is slightly black, it indicates water qi; if yellow, it indicates cold in the chest; if white, it indicates loss of blood; if slightly red at the wrong time, it indicates death; if the eyes are perfectly round, it indicates convulsions, which are untreatable. Furthermore, blue indicates pain, black indicates labor, red indicates wind, yellow indicates difficulty in defecation, and bright colors indicate retained fluids.(3)
【Original Text】
Clear evil resides above, turbid evil resides below; great evils are in the exterior, while minor evils are in the interior. The evil that enters through the mouth is from food retention. The five evils in humans each have their own rules: wind affects the front, cold affects the evening, dampness harms below, mist harms above. Wind causes the pulse to float, cold causes the pulse to be tight, mist harms the skin and pores, dampness flows into the joints, food harms the spleen and stomach, extreme cold harms the meridians, and extreme heat harms the collaterals.(13)
【Original Text】
Question: What does it mean when a disease is urgent and requires treatment for both the interior and exterior? The master said: If a disease causes diarrhea and the body is in pain, one should urgently treat the interior; if the body is in pain but the bowel movements are self-regulating, one should urgently treat the exterior.(14)
【Original Text】
When chronic diseases are compounded by acute diseases, one should first treat the acute disease, and then treat the chronic disease.(15)
【Original Text】
For all diseases in the organs, if one wishes to attack them, one should follow the symptoms to attack them. For example, if there is thirst, use Zhu Ling Tang (Polyporus Decoction). The rest follows this principle.(17)

【Original Text】
In Tai Yang disease, if there is fever without sweating and aversion to cold, it is called “stiff spasm.” (1)
In Tai Yang disease, if there is fever with sweating and no aversion to cold, it is called “soft spasm.” (2)
【Original Text】
If the patient has a hot body and cold feet, a stiff neck, aversion to cold, occasional head heat, a red face, red eyes, and the head shakes alone, with sudden mouth closure and a stiff back, this indicates a spasm disease. If sweating occurs, cold dampness is present, and the exterior is more deficient, then aversion to cold is severe. If sweating has already occurred, the pulse is like a snake.(7)
The spasm pulse is tight like a string when pressed, moving straight up and down. One version states it is “tight and string-like.” The “Pulse Classic” states: “In spasm, the pulse is hidden and firm, moving straight up and down.” (9)

【Original Text】
When wind and dampness collide, the whole body is in pain, the method should be to induce sweating and resolve it. If it is continuously cloudy and rainy, and the physician says this can induce sweating, why is the sweating disease not cured? It is because inducing sweating, if it is excessive, only removes the wind, but the dampness remains, hence it does not cure. If treating wind and dampness, induce sweating, but only slightly so that it seems to want to sweat, then both wind and dampness will be removed. (18)
