Identifying acupuncture points is a fundamental skill every TCM practitioner must learn. However, the human body has numerous and complex acupuncture points, making it challenging to accurately locate them, especially given their distribution. Today, I will share some mnemonic techniques for identifying commonly used acupuncture points to help you find them accurately!
Lung Meridian
Kong Zui Point: 7 cun above the wrist crease on the line connecting Tai Yuan and Qu Chi.
Qu Chi Point: At the outer end of the elbow crease, flex the elbow, at the midpoint of the line connecting Chi Ze and the outer upper condyle of the humerus.
Shao Shang Point: On the radial side of the thumb, about 0.1 cun from the corner of the nail.
He Gu Point: Between the first and second metacarpals, at the midpoint on the radial side of the second metacarpal.
Shou San Li Point: On the line connecting Yang Xi and Qu Chi, 2 cun below the elbow crease.
Stomach Meridian
Jia Che Point: At the bulge of the masseter muscle when chewing, at the depressed area when pressed.
Xia Guan: In the depression formed by the zygomatic arch and the angle of the mandible.
Tou Wei Point: On the side of the head, 0.5 cun above the hairline at the forehead, 4.5 cun lateral to the midline of the head.
Liang Men Point: In the upper abdomen, 4 cun above the navel, 2 cun lateral to the anterior midline.
Tian Shu Point: In the middle of the abdomen, 2 cun lateral to the navel.
Da Ju Point: In the lower abdomen, 2 cun below the navel, 2 cun lateral.
Shui Dao Point: In the lower abdomen, 3 cun below the navel, 2 cun lateral.
Gui Lai Point: In the lower abdomen, 4 cun below the navel, 2 cun lateral.
Liang Qiu Point: On the front of the thigh, 3 cun above the lower edge of the patella, on the line connecting the anterior superior iliac spine and the lateral edge of the patella.
Zu San Li Point: 3 cun below the outer knee eye (Xiyan), 1 transverse finger from the anterior edge of the tibia.
Shang Ju Xu Point: 6 cun below the outer knee eye (Xiyan), 1 transverse finger from the anterior edge of the tibia.
Tiao Kou Point: 8 cun below the outer knee eye (Xiyan), 1 transverse finger from the anterior edge of the tibia.
Xia Ju Xu Point: 9 cun below the outer knee eye (Xiyan), 1 transverse finger from the anterior edge of the tibia.
Feng Long Point: 8 cun below the outer knee eye (Xiyan), 2 transverse fingers from the anterior edge of the tibia.
Jie Xi Point: In the center of the transverse crease of the foot.
Nei Ting Point: On the dorsum of the foot, between the 2nd and 3rd toes, at the red-white flesh junction behind the toe web.
Spleen Meridian
Yin Bai Point: On the inner side of the tip of the big toe, about 0.1 cun from the corner of the nail.
San Yin Jiao: 3 cun above the tip of the medial malleolus, on the posterior edge of the tibia.
Lou Gu Point: On the line connecting the tip of the medial malleolus and Yin Ling Quan, 6 cun above the tip of the medial malleolus.
Di Ji Point: On the line connecting the tip of the medial malleolus and Yin Ling Quan, 3 cun below Yin Ling Quan.
Yin Ling Quan: On the inner side of the lower leg, in the depression below the posterior edge of the medial condyle of the tibia.
Xue Hai Point: On the inner side of the thigh, 2 cun above the medial condyle of the patella.
Da Heng Point: In the middle abdomen, 4 cun lateral to the navel.
Heart Meridian
Ling Dao Point: On the palmar side of the forearm, on the radial side of the flexor carpi ulnaris tendon, 1.5 cun above the wrist crease.
Yin Xie Point: On the palmar side of the forearm, on the radial side of the flexor carpi ulnaris tendon, 0.5 cun above the wrist crease.
Shen Men Point: At the ulnar side of the wrist crease, in the depression on the radial side of the flexor carpi ulnaris tendon.
Small Intestine Meridian
Hou Xi Point: On the ulnar side of the palm, slightly clenched fist, at the distal end of the transverse crease behind the fifth metacarpophalangeal joint.
Yang Lao Point: See above for point location.
Jian Zhen Point: Below the shoulder joint, 1 cun above the posterior axillary fold when the upper arm is adducted.
Jian Wai Yu Point: 3 cun lateral to the spinous process of the first thoracic vertebra.
Jian Zhong Yu Point: 2 cun lateral to the spinous process of the seventh cervical vertebra.
Qian Xue Point: Below the outer canthus of the eye, in the depression below the zygomatic arch.
Bladder Meridian
Can Zhu Point: In the depression at the medial end of the eyebrow.
Cheng Fu Point: At the midpoint of the gluteal fold.
Wei Zhong Point: In the center of the popliteal fossa.
He Yang Point: 2 cun below Wei Zhong on the line connecting Wei Zhong and Cheng Shan.
Cheng Shan Point: In the depression at the apex of the gastrocnemius muscle.
Kun Lun Point: In the depression between the tip of the lateral malleolus and the Achilles tendon.
Zhi Yin Point: On the outer side of the little toe, about 0.1 cun from the corner of the nail.
Kidney Meridian
Tai Xi Point: In the depression between the tip of the medial malleolus and the Achilles tendon.
Zhao Hai Point: In the depression below the tip of the medial malleolus.
Heng Gu Point: In the lower abdomen, 5 cun below the navel, 0.5 cun lateral to the anterior midline.
Qi Point: 3 cun below the navel, 0.5 cun lateral to the anterior midline.
Pericardium Meridian
Nei Guan Point: 2 cun above the wrist crease.
Ye Men Point: Between the 4th and 5th fingers, at the red-white flesh junction behind the toe web.
Zhong Zhu Point: On the back of the hand, behind the metacarpophalangeal joints of the 4th and 5th metacarpals.
Wai Guan Point: 2 cun above the wrist crease.
Zhi Gu Point: 3 cun above the wrist crease.
Gallbladder Meridian
Dai Mai Point: 1.8 cun below Zhang Men, level with the navel.
Yang Ling Quan: On the outer side of the lower leg, in the depression below the head of the fibula.
Xuan Zhong Point: 3 cun above the tip of the lateral malleolus.
Gan Meridian: Used less frequently for conditions related to the liver, pregnancy, and childbirth.
Ren Meridian
Zhong Wan Point: 4 cun above the navel. Xia Wan Point: 2 cun above the navel.
Shui Fen Point: 1 cun above the navel. Qi Hai Point: 1.5 cun below the navel.
Guan Yuan Point: 3 cun below the navel. Zhong Ji Point: 4 cun below the navel.
Du Meridian
Yao Yang Guan: In the depression on the midline of the back, below the spinous process of the 4th lumbar vertebra.
Ming Men Point: In the depression below the spinous process of the 2nd lumbar vertebra.
Da Zui: In the depression below the spinous process of the 7th cervical vertebra.
Ren Zhong Point: At the intersection of the upper third and middle third of the philtrum.
Tai Yang Point
Located in front of the auricle, on both sides of the forehead, above the extension line of the outer canthus.
