Last week, I organized a group purchase for Jiawei Yuling Gao (Modified Jade Spirit Paste) on my public account, and I specifically mentioned that people with a damp-heat constitution should not take it.As a result, many damp-heat friends were crying in the bathroom…Is this discrimination against damp-heat people? Aren’t we all hard-working individuals? Why should we be discriminated against?Yes, it shouldn’t be like this, so the diet for damp-heat individuals is immediately arranged—today, I will specifically write about foods that are suitable for damp-heat people, to infuriate those who are neither damp nor hot!
Indeed, nine out of ten people are damp, and the remaining one is often not encountered.Dampness itself is a type of Yin evil, and once it exists in the body, it is difficult to metabolize unless the body’s spleen and qi are sufficient, and Yang qi is vigorous, to transform and expel the excess fluids. Now the problem arises: most people today have spleen deficiency and insufficient Yang qi, so how can they easily eliminate excess fluids? If you don’t believe it, just ask someone nearby to stick out their tongue for you to see; either it is wet and slippery, or there are obvious saliva lines, or there is thick and greasy tongue coating. They are all damp people. So how does one become damp-heat? Dampness is a tangible evil, while heat is an intangible evil. Once dampness is present, heat has a medium to reside in, so they immediately conspire together, forming damp-heat.Heat can be an external pathogenic heat, or it can be heat from food intake (such as excessive consumption of spicy and warming foods), or it can be damp evil that has accumulated for a long time and transforms into heat.Once damp-heat forms, it becomes quite difficult to treat—both dampness must be eliminated and heat must be cleared, and one cannot clear heat too vigorously, or it will easily lead to ice accumulation, essentially freezing the damp-heat, making it even harder to eliminate. So what to do? For damp-heat, the focus should be on eliminating dampness, with heat-clearing as a supplementary measure. Common herbal formulas for eliminating damp-heat include Sanren Tang (Three Nut Decoction), Wen Dan Tang (Warm Gallbladder Decoction), Long Dan Xie Gan Tang (Gentiana Decoction for Draining the Liver), and Ping Wei San (Calm the Stomach Powder). However, some people may not be able to differentiate their symptoms and are afraid to self-medicate, fearing that they might worsen their condition. Therefore, today I will recommend several dietary therapy methods that are relatively safe and won’t harm anyone even if the diagnosis is not entirely accurate.
Let’s first look at the obvious characteristics of damp-heat individuals:Overall characteristics: oily complexion, bitter mouth, yellow greasy tongue coating.Common manifestations: oily face and hair, prone to acne, bitter and dry mouth, heavy and fatigued body, sticky or constipated stools, short yellow urine, men prone to scrotal dampness and itching, women prone to yellow and excessive leukorrhea, or tofu-like discharge, red tongue body, yellow greasy coating, slippery and rapid pulse.Psychological characteristics: prone to irritability and anxiety.Individuals with this constitution are not suitable for tonifying, as it can easily increase body heat and lead to symptoms of excess heat. Overly rich foods can also burden the already weak spleen and stomach. To tonify, one must first eliminate damp-heat.The most commonly used foods that are both medicinal and edible for eliminating damp-heat are Yi Yi Ren (Coix Seed), Bai Bian Dou (White Hyacinth Bean), Fu Ling (Poria), and Chi Xiao Dou (Adzuki Bean). To be honest, these ingredients are not easy to cook; they are hard to soften, and even when cooked, their texture is average. Therefore, the best way to consume them is to grind them into powder and cook them with rice to make porridge.1. Yi Yi Ren and Bai Bian Dou Porridge.40 grams of Yi Yi Ren powder, 30 grams of Bai Bian Dou powder, and an appropriate amount of rice cooked together to make porridge. Consume in the morning and evening.Yi Yi Ren has the effect of clearing heat and eliminating dampness, while Bai Bian Dou can strengthen the spleen and transform dampness. Consuming this porridge regularly can significantly improve damp-heat constitution and strengthen the spleen and stomach. This is especially suitable for teenagers with damp-heat who are prone to acne, as Yi Yi Ren not only eliminates dampness but also has the effect of expelling pus and detoxifying.2. Fu Ling and Che Qian Porridge30 grams each of Fu Ling powder and Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed), an appropriate amount of rice, and a little white sugar.Wrap the Che Qian Zi in gauze and simmer in a clay pot for half an hour. After simmering, strain the liquid, add Fu Ling powder and rice to cook porridge, and finally add a little white sugar for flavor.Che Qian Zi can be purchased at pharmacies and has the effects of clearing heat, promoting urination, and stopping leukorrhea, while Fu Ling strengthens the spleen and eliminates dampness. Thus, this porridge is mainly used for those with yellow urine and excessive yellow leukorrhea.3. Chi Xiao Dou and Yi Yi Ren Porridge30 grams of Chi Xiao Dou powder, 40 grams of Yi Yi Ren powder, and an appropriate amount of rice.Cook the Chi Xiao Dou and Yi Yi Ren powder together with rice to make porridge.Chi Xiao Dou can promote urination, relieve edema, and detoxify. This porridge is particularly suitable for those with painful and yellow urination, as well as those with severe athlete’s foot and itchy toes with yellow discharge.4. Shan Zha and Bian Dou Porridge30 grams of Yi Yi Ren, 15 grams of roasted Bai Bian Dou, 15 grams of Shan Zha (Hawthorn), and an appropriate amount of brown sugar.Cook the above three ingredients together with water to make porridge, and add brown sugar for flavor after cooking. This recipe comes from the Compendium of Materia Medica and isused to treat menstrual irregularities or amenorrhea due to damp-heat obstruction. In this formula, Yi Yi Ren and Bai Bian Dou eliminate dampness, strengthen the spleen, and clear heat, while Shan Zha and brown sugar promote blood circulation and regulate menstruation. The above small recipes are very safe dietary therapies that can both regulate damp-heat constitution and be consumed purely as food. However, it is important to note that if you want to regulate your constitution, you must avoid certain foods during the consumption period, such as hot beef, lamb, and chicken, fried foods, and ensure early sleep without staying up late. Because no matter how good the medicine or dietary therapy is, it cannot overcome poor lifestyle and dietary habits.Medicine treats three parts of the disease, while seven parts rely on oneself.Alright, if you want to say goodbye to greasiness, then start by eating the right foods.
