Dear friends, hello! Today we will talk about a traditional formula, which one? Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan.
I may have introduced Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan before, and many friends have asked me why this formula is so miraculous. I have mentioned that it can treat gout, and it is said that many people now buy it in boxes at the pharmacy to take home. Many friends say that after taking it, their blood uric acid levels have really dropped, and the symptoms of gout have disappeared. I have heard many friends tell me this, and they are very happy.
What was this formula originally used for? This formula is mainly for gynecological issues and to support the body’s vital energy. Why is this formula so miraculous? Let me share with you about Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan.
Where did this formula come from? This formula originated in the Ming Dynasty, from a physician named Gong Tingxian, who mentioned Wu Ji Wan and Bai Feng Wan in his book Shou Shi Bao Yuan. Later generations combined them to create Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan.
Gong Tingxian was not an ordinary person; he was known as the top scholar in medicine. At that time, the prince of the Lu Wang family, a royal family with the surname Zhu, had a concubine who suffered from abdominal distension, with a very swollen belly and thin arms and legs, looking extremely weak and lacking energy. Many doctors could not cure her. However, when Gong Tingxian came, he prescribed a formula and adjusted it little by little, and surprisingly, he cured her. Many doctors could not do it, but he succeeded, showing his exceptional skills. The prince was very pleased and awarded him the title of top scholar in medicine, recognizing him as the best in the field. Gong Tingxian was very humble, saying it was too much praise, but his skills were indeed high.

What was he good at? He was skilled in nourishment. Gong Tingxian’s formulas contain many nourishing ingredients, which is related to his experience as a court physician. Later, he became famous and worked with high-ranking officials, so he was particularly adept at nourishment and had many methods. The Wu Ji Wan and Bai Feng Wan he created later combined into Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan, which is an excellent approach to nourishment.
From the name, we can see that the main ingredient of Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan is Wu Ji. So why use Wu Ji? What is Wu Ji? You may have seen it; Wu Ji can have white or black feathers, and its face and bones are black. Where is Wu Ji produced? The most authentic place for Wu Ji is Taihe County in Jiangxi Province. Gong Tingxian was also from Jiangxi, so he understood the nutritional value of Wu Ji.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believes that Wu Ji is neutral in nature and sweet in flavor. What are its effects? It can nourish yin, clear heat, tonify the liver and kidneys, and strengthen the spleen to stop diarrhea. If there is spleen deficiency leading to chronic diarrhea, Wu Ji is beneficial. If there is yin deficiency of the liver and kidneys causing false heat, Wu Ji is a good tonic. If we analyze it carefully, Wu Ji meat is indeed special. Generally, beef and lamb are warm in nature, chicken is warm, while duck and pork are cool. However, Wu Ji meat is nourishing and clears heat, primarily focusing on nourishing yin, which is quite unique because Wu Ji meat is indeed different.
Some may ask, is it really so? The color of Wu Ji is different from other chickens. The ancients said that this thing is good, is it really good? The ancients indeed discovered through practice that Wu Ji is indeed different. From ancient times to the present, it has been regarded as a particularly good nourishing delicacy. In the Tang Dynasty’s Shi Liao Ben Cao, there are already recipes for Wu Ji, showing how it was used to nourish postpartum women, indicating that Wu Ji had become a customary food for women at that time.
So is it really good? People still ask this question. Modern medicine and scientists have conducted extensive research on Wu Ji, and the results are very abundant. Compared to ordinary chickens, the content of various nutrients is indeed different, with many nutrients being significantly higher. For example, total amino acids, essential amino acids, and various trace elements are all present in higher amounts than in ordinary chickens. So you see, the experiences of the ancients are often validated today, which is a summary of practice, so there is indeed a difference.
In the formula Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan, Wu Ji is selected as the main herb for nourishing qi and blood, which is a unique and ingenious choice. Using animal products for nourishment is more effective than using plant-based tonics, so Wu Ji is used as the main herb.

Wu Ji is used to nourish qi and blood, focusing on nourishing yin, combined with Lu Jiao Jiao as another main herb. What is Lu Jiao Jiao? You know that deer antler velvet is the soft antler that grows on deer. If you do not harvest it, it will harden and become deer antlers the following year. The antlers are very hard when they grow up. The antlers are boiled down, and the remaining residue is called Lu Jiao Shuang, which is white and has small holes; this is the basic framework of the bones. The concentrated juice is called Lu Jiao Jiao, which becomes solid pieces.
What is Lu Jiao Jiao used for? Lu Jiao Jiao is warming and tonifies essence and blood. It is a very famous tonic herb. Lu Rong (deer velvet) warms yang, tonifies yang energy, and strengthens the governor vessel, having a function of enhancing yang. However, Lu Jiao Jiao is milder and has a very interesting effect; it works on tonifying essence. We have previously discussed what essence is; it is fundamental to the human body. Tonifying essence is important, and we have mentioned that Shu Di Huang (Rehmannia) is very important for tonifying kidney essence. What else can tonify kidney essence? Lu Jiao Jiao can also tonify kidney essence.
Lu Jiao Jiao tonifies kidney essence, developing towards warming yang. So you see, it can warm yang, treating male impotence and female uterine coldness, stopping excessive menstrual bleeding and discharge. When a woman’s uterus is cold, it can lead to discharge, and Lu Jiao Jiao can help warm it. While warming, it can also tonify blood, which is puzzling; how can it warm yang and tonify blood at the same time? It is due to its essence tonifying effect, as essence generates both yin and yang. On one hand, it can tonify yang, and on the other hand, it can nourish yin and tonify blood, thus treating our kidney qi deficiency and physical weakness. Because of weakened kidney qi, various problems arise, such as lower back pain, weak yang energy, blood deficiency, male impotence, and female uterine coldness, etc. Therefore, it tonifies essence, especially reproductive essence, which is a characteristic of Lu Jiao Jiao.
In Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan, you can see that it combines Wu Ji, which is focused on nourishing yin, with Lu Jiao Jiao, which is focused on tonifying essence and slightly warming yang. So you see, both herbs are main ingredients; one focuses on nourishing yin, and the other on warming yang. Together, they are both animal products, which means they are easier for the body to absorb. Therefore, these two herbs are powerful in nourishing essence and blood, tonifying the liver and kidneys.
What else is included in this formula? You know, this is a formula for regulating women’s physical weakness, so women must nourish blood. What is added for nourishing blood? It includes Shu Di Huang, Bai Shao, Dang Gui, and Chuan Xiong, which is the Four Substance Decoction, the ancestral formula for nourishing blood. This formula contains the Four Substance Decoction combined with Wu Ji, making it excellent for nourishing blood. Therefore, if women have sufficient blood, their bodies will gradually recover; this is essential for regulating women’s health.
Indeed, women are different from men. Women have many opportunities to lose blood throughout their lives, so many women’s health issues are related to blood deficiency. When blood is insufficient, it can lead to many diseases. What should be done at this time? When regulating various diseases, it is essential to observe; if she has blood deficiency, she needs to nourish blood. After nourishing blood, you will find that women’s bodies will recover on their own. Why? Because when blood is sufficient, their bodies will adjust themselves. Therefore, the ancients said that women rely on blood for nourishment, which is true. When regulating women’s health, this must be taken into account.
So you see, this formula includes the Four Substance Decoction. On the basis of nourishing blood, what else is added? It adds herbs that tonify the spleen and qi. Why? Because qi and blood are mutually generated; if qi is insufficient, blood will also decrease. If blood is insufficient, it cannot carry qi, meaning there is no platform to support qi, and qi will dissipate. Therefore, if a woman is physically weak and has blood deficiency, does she have enough strength? No, she will feel tired every day and very fatigued. At this time, while nourishing blood, it is necessary to also nourish qi.
So this formula includes Ren Shen. Ren Shen is a primary herb for tonifying vital energy, especially tonifying lung qi. Ren Shen acts quickly, and when combined with Huang Qi, which is milder and softer, the combination is very complementary. Therefore, Ren Shen and Huang Qi together provide strong qi tonification.
Adding Shan Yao, which I have always mentioned, has a very strong effect on tonifying the spleen, lungs, and kidneys. When combined with Huang Qi, which tonifies middle qi and stabilizes the exterior, the combination of Ren Shen, Huang Qi, and Shan Yao is an excellent match for tonifying qi, benefiting the spleen, and nourishing effectively. Therefore, the selection of herbs in this formula is very precise.
When tonifying, if there is blood deficiency, there may be false heat. Why? Because blood deficiency and yin deficiency are often related; blood belongs to yin, and insufficient blood leads to insufficient body fluids. Therefore, insufficient body fluids can lead to yin deficiency, making it easy to generate internal heat. Those with blood deficiency and qi deficiency are prone to false heat. It may seem like heat, but it is not real heat; it is due to insufficient internal fluids and yin substances.
What should be done? The formula includes Sheng Di, Tian Dong, and Bie Jia. What are they for? They nourish yin and clear heat. I will nourish yin and replenish body fluids, supplementing yin substances to clear away this false heat. What else is included? Yin Chai Hu is also included. You may find this herb unfamiliar; we often talk about Chai Hu, but Yin Chai Hu is entirely different. This herb is specifically for clearing false heat caused by yin deficiency, effectively clearing away false heat. Therefore, in this formula, Sheng Di, Tian Dong, and Bie Jia, along with Yin Chai Hu, are all herbs that nourish yin and clear false heat. You see, they clear away false heat.
However, even so, some people may still experience heat after taking Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan, indicating that their yin deficiency is more severe. At this time, other herbs can be added, such as Liu Wei Di Huang Wan, or using Sheng Di, Sha Shen, and Mai Dong to decoct and take with Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan.
Some individuals may still feel a bit of heat after taking this formula because the herbs like Lu Jiao Jiao, Ren Shen, and Huang Qi are still warming tonics.
Next, what else is included in this formula? It includes Lu Jiao Shuang, Duan Mu Li, Sang Piao Xiao, and Qian Shi. These herbs have specific purposes. Lu Jiao Shuang is the residue left after boiling down the deer antlers, which is white with small holes and crumbles easily. In this formula, deer antlers are also used. What are deer antlers? Let me explain.
Deer antlers are the soft antlers that grow on deer. If the antlers are not harvested, they gradually harden and become deer antlers. The medicinal properties of deer antlers and velvet differ significantly. Deer velvet mainly tonifies and warms kidney yang, while deer antlers, although they come from the same source, have different medicinal properties. What do they do? In addition to tonifying the kidneys, deer antlers have a weaker tonifying effect than velvet, but they also promote blood circulation and detoxify.
What do we treat with this? For example, if someone has sores due to blood stasis, where qi and blood are stagnant, the ancients said that evil qi remains in the blood. At this time, deer antlers can help expel this evil qi, thus treating sores, swelling, and blood stasis. Therefore, in ancient formulas, deer antlers are used for large sores and blood toxicity, often combined with other herbs for regulation.
It should be noted that the treatment directions of deer velvet and deer antlers are quite distinct. Deer antlers are more focused on detoxification and are particularly good at resolving heat toxins and restoring the smooth flow of qi and blood. This is the important function of deer antlers. Generally, the formula Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan uses Lu Jiao Shuang and Lu Jiao Jiao, which are derived from boiling deer antlers. However, I believe that using deer antlers directly is more potent because it is a single herb.
So why do we say that Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan can treat gout? Because gout is essentially metabolic waste in our body, which can be considered an external evil, a toxic evil that remains in the body and cannot be eliminated. The deer antlers in the formula can help dispel this evil qi, thus if we combine Lu Rong, Lu Jiao Jiao, Lu Jiao Shuang, and deer antlers, I believe that including deer antlers is particularly appropriate because they have strong effects in promoting blood circulation, reducing swelling, detoxifying, and resolving blood stasis.
This formula also includes Qing Hao, which replaces Bie Jia in the original formula. What is the function of Qing Hao? Qing Hao also helps to dispel evil qi. When a person feels external heat or an external evil invades the blood and yin, it can help clear the heat evil from the blood and yin. Therefore, the ancients said it can clear damp-heat from the blood, which is a very important function. In the past, there was a formula called Qing Hao Bie Jia Tang, which used Qing Hao to help dispel the evil qi from within.
Some friends may ask, why add herbs that dispel evil qi to a nourishing formula? The reason is that individuals with insufficient righteous qi may have false heat, and sometimes external evils may be lurking inside. Therefore, there is often a bit of hidden evil qi in the body. At this time, if you can nourish qi and blood while also dispelling evil qi, clearing false heat, and helping the body recover, it will truly restore health. Therefore, in such formulas, it is often beneficial to add a bit of herbs that help dispel evil qi.
So think again, why can Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan treat gout? In fact, gout, such as high blood uric acid, is also a type of waste that cannot be metabolized, which can be considered a form of evil qi that needs to be expelled. Therefore, adding Qing Hao to help the body clear this evil qi is the intention behind it, which is why Tong Ren Tang’s Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan is very effective after using Qing Hao.
What are the differences between Lu Jiao Shuang and Lu Jiao Jiao? Lu Jiao Jiao is more potent, while Lu Jiao Shuang is milder. It also warms and tonifies kidney yang, entering the liver and kidney meridians, and tonifies the kidneys to assist yang. Lu Jiao Jiao tonifies essence and blood, having a warming effect on the kidneys. Lu Jiao Shuang tonifies kidney yang, and its properties are warming, not hot. It is generally used to treat impotence caused by kidney yang deficiency, as well as diarrhea and frequent urination due to kidney yang deficiency.
In addition to tonifying kidney yang, it also has astringent and hemostatic effects. This astringent property has special applications, such as in cases of excessive menstrual bleeding due to kidney yang deficiency. At this time, Lu Jiao Shuang is particularly effective, as it can help astringe. Astringent herbs, such as Long Gu (dragon bone), can be tested by licking; you can feel it stick to your tongue. Lu Jiao Shuang has a similar property, with many holes that can easily adhere.
In addition to Lu Jiao Shuang, the formula also includes Duan Mu Li, which also has astringent and hemostatic properties. Why include Duan Mu Li? Because some women with spleen and kidney deficiency may experience discharge, such as white or yellow discharge. At this time, what is needed is to nourish the vital energy while also astringing. Lu Jiao Shuang and Duan Mu Li can fulfill this role.
Next, what other herbs are included in this formula? It includes Sang Piao Xiao and Qian Shi. What is Sang Piao Xiao? It is the egg of the mantis, which is known for its large forelimbs. The mantis lays its eggs in a spongy substance, which is called Sang Piao Xiao. We have many of these in our yard, and they hatch into small mantises.
What is the function of Sang Piao Xiao? It is often used in formulas for children who wet the bed, treating this condition. Sang Piao Xiao can help tonify the kidneys and astringe essence, having astringent effects. Therefore, for children who frequently urinate at night, or adults with nocturnal emissions, premature ejaculation, etc., Sang Piao Xiao is often included in the formula.
So you see, the ancients gradually discovered the connections between various substances through experimentation. They found that many things could adjust our bodies after being used as medicine, which is indeed a great wisdom. Now, looking at this, I can only think that it can hatch small mantises, which is amusing, but how it treats diseases may not be immediately apparent. The ancients gradually discovered these through practice.
Additionally, Qian Shi is included in this formula. What is the function of Qian Shi? Qian Shi tonifies the spleen and kidneys, benefiting the kidneys and astringing essence, and it also stops diarrhea. Its special function is astringent. For children with nocturnal enuresis due to insufficient kidney qi and unstable spleen qi, or adults with nocturnal emissions, premature ejaculation, etc., Qian Shi is also beneficial. It is also an astringent herb.
As you can see, this formula includes several astringent herbs: Lu Jiao Shuang, Duan Mu Li, Sang Piao Xiao, and Qian Shi, all of which tonify the liver and kidneys, tonify the spleen and kidneys, and have astringent effects. Therefore, it is very effective for women experiencing discharge due to insufficient righteous qi.
This formula also includes Dan Shen, which is well-known for promoting blood circulation and unblocking meridians. Individuals with insufficient righteous qi often lack the strength to promote blood circulation, leading to blood stasis. Therefore, using herbs to invigorate blood and resolve stasis is necessary to open the meridians. If the meridians are open, women can have normal menstruation; otherwise, blood stagnation will occur. Generally, using only blood-invigorating herbs is not sufficient for these weak women, as it may further deplete their righteous qi. Therefore, I will tonify the righteous qi first, and then add a bit of blood-invigorating herbs, which will be more effective. Thus, Dan Shen is included.
Additionally, Xiang Fu is added, which regulates qi and soothes the liver. When liver qi is unblocked, it is better for regulating menstruation, as women’s menstrual blood is closely related to liver regulation. If liver qi is stagnant, qi and blood cannot flow smoothly, leading to irregular menstruation. Therefore, when regulating women’s menstruation, it is essential to soothe the liver and regulate qi. This is because women are particularly susceptible to emotional distress and external influences. Therefore, this formula includes Xiang Fu, along with Gan Cao, which harmonizes the other herbs, completing the formula, which is Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan.
So what does Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan primarily treat? This formula primarily treats women’s qi and blood deficiency, which is the root cause of many diseases. Due to qi and blood deficiency, what symptoms may arise? For example, the body may feel particularly weak, often fatigued, and experience lower back and knee soreness. Due to qi and blood deficiency, menstrual flow may be insufficient, leading to irregular menstruation. Additionally, insufficient qi and blood can lead to discharge.
Therefore, in cases of physical weakness, using Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan can nourish qi and blood, regulate menstruation, and stop discharge. Menstrual flow will gradually increase, and discharge will slowly diminish. When righteous qi is sufficient, the body will recover. Thus, this formula primarily nourishes women’s qi and blood deficiency.
Many people say that after taking Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan, their skin improves, their complexion looks good, and their overall condition is better. Why? It is due to the original qi and blood deficiency. Once qi and blood are replenished, you will find that your complexion improves, and your appearance gradually changes. Some say it is a beauty tonic, which is indeed suitable for women.
However, everyone must remember, who should not use it? It is essential to clarify that if there is severe blood stasis, the focus should be on resolving stasis. This formula is not primarily for resolving stasis; it mainly nourishes and astringes, tonifying both yin and yang, and nourishing qi and blood. It provides nourishment while adding a bit of blood-invigorating herbs like Dan Shen and regulating qi with Xiang Fu. However, this blood-invigorating effect is not sufficient for those with severe blood stasis.
Individuals with severe blood stasis may experience pain when pressing on the abdomen, have a thick tongue coating, and exhibit signs of blood stasis, such as dark circles under the eyes and a bluish complexion. Such individuals are not suitable for this formula, as it is primarily for those who are particularly weak. Of course, if this formula is combined with herbs that resolve stasis, it would be even better. However, using Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan alone is not suitable for those with severe blood stasis, especially if menstrual irregularities are caused by blood stasis.
Secondly, if liver qi stagnation is particularly severe, for example, if a woman has irregular menstruation due to emotional distress, such as anger, leading to missed periods, it may not be due to qi and blood deficiency but rather due to stagnation. In this case, it is better to use herbs that soothe the liver and regulate qi, such as Jia Wei Xiao Yao Wan.
Aside from women, can others use it? I often tell everyone about Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan. It is indeed very beneficial for women, especially after childbirth or miscarriage, as it effectively nourishes qi and blood. In the past, this formula was commonly used in the imperial court, as seen in the drama Da Zhai Men, where the palace specifically requested Tong Ren Tang to produce Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan.
This is not a fictional story; the director of Da Zhai Men was the adopted son of the Tong Ren Tang manager, so he understood the situation. The plot is not fabricated. In the palace, women needed Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan for nourishment, so it was specifically requested from Tong Ren Tang. Indeed, whether in the palace or among common people, when women experience qi and blood deficiency after childbirth, using Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan for nourishment is very appropriate and effective.
◎ Hand-drawn at age eight
Aside from women, can both men and women use it after surgery when they are severely qi and blood deficient and physically weak? Of course, it can be used. For example, if men feel particularly weak and have insufficient qi and blood, often feeling fatigued, can they use this formula? Absolutely.
This medicine is not gender-specific; a single formula does not distinguish between genders.
I have told everyone that Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan can also help regulate gout. Many friends, after hearing my introduction, were surprised, asking how it could work since it is a women’s tonic. However, gout occurs when we consume rich foods, such as seafood, leading to elevated blood uric acid levels that cannot be metabolized, resulting in deposits and crystallization causing gout. In this situation, our past treatment methods involved expelling the waste, helping you eliminate it, and clearing damp-heat to reduce symptoms.
Another method is to avoid certain foods altogether, such as seafood, beer, mushrooms, tofu, etc., which requires many dietary restrictions. On the other hand, we help you eliminate waste, and over time, blood uric acid levels can gradually decrease. However, these methods are temporary; if you stop, you will find that blood uric acid levels rise again. Therefore, these methods can be used temporarily to help clear damp-heat during acute episodes, alleviating symptoms.
But what is the fundamental treatment? Why does blood uric acid accumulate? It is because your righteous qi is insufficient to metabolize it. At this time, I need to support your righteous qi, tonifying the liver and kidneys, and tonifying the spleen and kidneys. Once your righteous qi is enhanced, you will be able to expel what needs to be expelled and retain what should be retained. This ability will improve, allowing your body to distinguish between good and bad substances, expelling waste while retaining beneficial substances. Once this ability is enhanced, your body can gradually eliminate waste and lower blood uric acid levels. This is the principle behind Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan treating gout.
Indeed, since I promoted it, many friends have had good results. One friend said that his brother-in-law was initially embarrassed to take it, worried about being seen taking Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan, as many businessmen in Guangdong care about their image. He threw away the box and took the pills discreetly. As a result, after taking them, his blood uric acid levels normalized, which had previously been very high. Now he can eat seafood without any issues, and he is very happy.
Why can he eat seafood without any problems? It is because his body’s righteous qi has improved, allowing him to expel waste and retain beneficial substances. This is the result of the various qi-supporting ingredients in Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan. Sometimes, TCM formulas indeed have this subtlety; when these herbs are combined, they can achieve remarkable effects. You may not have thought of it initially, but through clinical experience, it has been found to have this effect. Analyzing the combination of the formula reveals that its pairing is very clever.
Therefore, I believe that in the future, the indications for Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan may expand. Perhaps based on research, the treatment of gout may be added to its indications. When regulating, it is important to note that during acute episodes or when damp-heat is evident, it is still necessary to clear damp-heat using Long Dan Cao or other formulas to expel damp-heat from the body. Then, you can take Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan consistently, which will be very beneficial.
Some friends may not have damp-heat; they are simply weak, with spleen and kidney deficiency leading to high blood uric acid levels. For such friends, you can directly take Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan. Therefore, I heard at Tong Ren Tang that many people buy it in bulk, and they share it with each other, receiving very positive feedback. This is a treatment method that the common people have gradually discovered.
In fact, this method is not something I invented; it is something that the common people have found to be very effective. Many people have benefited from it, and they have provided feedback to me, asking why taking this has actually cured their gout. They find this method a bit strange; is there any rationale behind it? I have discovered that there is indeed a rationale, so I recommend it to more friends, and many have indeed benefited. It seems that TCM formulas, especially traditional ones, contain great mysteries. If you study them carefully, you can apply them to various conditions, as many diseases can be regulated with traditional Chinese patent medicines.
Dear friends, today we have discussed traditional formulas. If you have time, we can talk more about formulas. Thank you all, and see you next time!
