After several years of the pandemic, people’s awareness of health preservation has gradually increased, with a heightened sense of valuing life! The younger generation, particularly those born in the 1990s and 2000s, now carry thermos cups when they go out, brew health teas in the office, and engage in practices like foot baths and learning Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). This is a positive phenomenon. The best doctors treat illnesses before they occur; do not wait until your body is in extreme pain or discomfort to see a doctor. It’s better to be safe than sorry, as time may not be on your side. Some people around us use certain products or practice specific health techniques to improve sub-health issues, but they see little change.Recently, I have been contemplating this issue, and the answer suddenly became clear to me.In summary: The ultimate goal of health preservation is to cultivate good habits.Health preservation is about developing habits, as persistent effort leads to success.
1. 70% of Diseases are Related to EmotionsThe Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon) states: “Anger harms the liver, joy harms the heart, overthinking harms the spleen, sadness harms the lungs, fear harms the kidneys.” “Anger causes qi to rise, joy causes qi to relax, sadness causes qi to dissipate, fear causes qi to descend, shock causes qi to become chaotic, and overthinking causes qi to stagnate.”Emotions are one of the important factors affecting human health, with 70% of diseases related to emotions. Therefore, maintaining emotional stability and a positive mindset is one of the keys to health preservation. To maintain emotional stability, we can adopt methods such as standing meditation, practicing Tai Chi, or engaging in conversations with friends and family to enrich our lives, relieve stress, and improve our emotional state. We can try to face life’s difficulties and challenges with a positive attitude, seeking opportunities and motivation for growth; we can also practice tolerance and understanding, maintaining a forgiving heart towards others’ mistakes and avoiding letting trivial matters affect our emotions.Take care of your heart, spend more time in quiet reflection, and learn to let go without complaints.
2. Controlling Your Diet is Also HealingAs the saying goes: “Illness enters through the mouth.” Controlling your diet can prevent many diseases, and some diseases can even heal themselves.Focus on healthy and nutritious eating, avoid excessive intake of high-calorie, high-fat, and high-sugar foods, and reduce the damage caused by poor eating habits.Often, eating is a way to cope with our emotions. We may indulge in food and drink when feeling down, or celebrate with food and drink when feeling happy. From a TCM perspective, health preservation is about subtraction. In fact, we do not need to eat so much; a feeling of 70% fullness is sufficient. This is the secret to staying away from diseases and not overburdening our digestive system. In addition to controlling our diet, we can also promote health by increasing our intake of dietary fiber. Dietary fiber helps the digestive system function properly, maintains intestinal health, and prevents constipation and other intestinal issues. At the same time, dietary fiber can lower cholesterol levels and prevent cardiovascular diseases.3. Nourishing Yang QiAll living things depend on the sun for growth; Yang Qi is like the sun. Without Yang Qi, what would happen to all living things? This illustrates the importance of Yang Qi for the body; nourishing Yang Qi leads to longevity and good health. Many modern people spend too much time sitting in offices, often for five to six hours at a time. After work, they collapse on the sofa, hardly moving, making it difficult for qi and blood to circulate and for meridians to remain open.If we do not exercise, the food we consume is also hard to digest, which can lead to the accumulation of dampness over time. Therefore, even on busy days, we should take time to stretch, walk, practice standing meditation, Tai Chi, and Ba Duan Jin (Eight Pieces of Brocade).Additionally, do not sleep in too late in the morning, as this is not conducive to the generation of Yang Qi; getting up early to stretch is beneficial. Avoid staying up too late at night, as this also depletes Yang Qi. Learn to adapt your health practices to the seasons. When the sun is out, take the opportunity to bask in the sun, especially on your back, as this is a way to absorb Yang Qi.People with abundant Yang Qi tend to be more energetic, confident, and have the vitality to accomplish tasks. Let’s work together to nourish our Yang Qi!
