Symptoms of Kidney Yang Deficiency
Kidney Yang deficiency (Shen Yang Xu) refers to insufficient Kidney Yang, leading to cold extremities, aversion to cold, lack of energy, and the most typical manifestation is decreased sexual function, especially reduced hardness, scrotal contraction, and frequent urination.
Kidney Yang deficiency is a type of deficiency-cold syndrome caused by the decline of Kidney Yang, resulting in inadequate warming and impaired transformation.
This condition is often caused by a constitution of Yang deficiency, aging-related Kidney depletion, prolonged illness harming the Kidneys, or excessive sexual activity.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the Kidneys govern water, and Kidney Yang plays a role in the transformation and vaporization of fluids. If Kidney Yang is insufficient, the ability to vaporize and transform is weakened, leading to symptoms such as clear and frequent urination.
Kidney deficiency often accumulates over a long period; thus, one should not hastily use potent tonics or unclear kidney-strengthening medications but should instead gradually regulate the condition.
01 “Treatment and Prevention”
Dietary Therapy: Warming Yang and Nourishing the Kidneys
Dietary formula for Kidney Yang deficiency: Cucumber seeds + Fennel seeds + Chive seeds + Euryale seeds
Cucumber seeds: Cucumber seed powder can regulate the interaction between organs, promote cell regeneration, regulate meridians, and nourish the brain and cerebellum, enhancing memory and coordinating body balance. It effectively promotes calcium absorption, with rapid and optimal results.
Fennel seeds: Fennel seeds can be used medicinally, warming Yang, dispelling cold, regulating Qi, and alleviating pain, primarily treating cold stomach, vomiting, and lower back pain. The Chinese Pharmacopoeia lists fennel preparations as commonly used for invigorating the stomach, dispelling cold, moving Qi, and relieving pain. Fenchone in fennel can promote the maturation of bone marrow cells and their release into peripheral blood, significantly increasing white blood cell counts, particularly neutrophils, and can be used for leukopenia.
Chive seeds: Chive seeds are warm in nature, slightly sweet in taste, and have effects of nourishing the Kidney Yang, benefiting the liver, and securing essence. Clinically, they are mainly used for impotence due to Liver Yang deficiency and insufficient Kidney Yang, lower back and knee cold pain, as well as nocturnal emissions, enuresis, frequent urination, and leukorrhea due to Kidney deficiency.
Euryale seeds: Euryale seeds are first recorded in the Shennong Bencao Jing, classified as a superior herb, also known as ‘Ji Tou Zi’. It has been documented in various editions of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia as the dried mature seeds of the aquatic herb Euryale fox, possessing beneficial effects on the Kidneys, securing essence, tonifying the Spleen, stopping diarrhea, and dispelling dampness. It is primarily used for treating nocturnal emissions, enuresis, frequent urination, chronic diarrhea due to Spleen deficiency, and leukorrhea. It is often referred to as “water ginseng” and “water longan”, being a traditional medicinal material and a precious natural supplement.

Running Exercise:
From personal experience, running is the best way to regulate Spleen deficiency, but exercise should be moderate, and one should run only after an hour of eating, according to one’s capacity.
Improving Sleep Quality
Through running, the blood and oxygen supply to the brain can increase by 25%, thus improving nighttime sleep quality.
“Ventilation” Effect
During running, lung capacity can increase from an average of 5.8 liters to 6.2 liters, while the oxygen-carrying capacity in the blood also significantly increases.
“Pumping” Power Increase
During exercise, the heart rate and efficiency significantly improve, along with increased heart rate, blood pressure, and vascular elasticity.
Promoting Health
Running can promote the production of white blood cells and pyrogens, which can eliminate many viruses and bacteria in our body.
Maintaining Stability
Regular jogging practice can enhance the resistance of tendons, ligaments, and joints to injury, reducing the likelihood of exercise-related injuries. Additionally, the skin, muscles, and connective tissues can become firmer.
Eliminating Tension
Jogging can suppress the secretion of adrenaline and cortisol, two hormones that cause tension, while releasing “endorphins” that promote relaxation.
Staying Young
Regular exercise increases the secretion of growth hormone (HGH), which can tighten the skin and delay aging.
