Kidney Yang can be likened to the fire of the human body, which is fundamental to maintaining Yang Qi. Just as a pot requires fuel, insufficient Kidney Yang leads to a state of quietness and suppression in bodily functions that should be active and “boiling.” This can result in symptoms such as cold intolerance, cold hands and feet, discomfort from air conditioning in summer, and increased sensitivity to cold in winter, requiring more clothing and blankets than usual. In severe cases, it can affect reproductive function and sexual quality.
So how should one regulate Kidney Yang deficiency?
1. Dietary Yang Supplementation
Minimize the intake of foods that promote internal cold. Many people enjoy cold drinks in summer, but this is not suitable for those with Kidney Yang deficiency. Foods that are bitter and cold, which clear internal heat, such as bitter melon, grapefruit, and watermelon, are also inappropriate. “Nurturing Yang in spring and summer, nurturing Yin in autumn and winter” is a guiding principle; thus, individuals with Kidney Yang deficiency can consume Yang-nourishing foods in spring and summer, such as lamb and beef, to increase internal Yang Qi.
2. Sanfu Plaster
Summer is the season for storing Yang Qi, and the Sanfu period is the hottest time of the summer, making it an excellent opportunity to support Yang. Many hospitals are now actively promoting the use of “Sanfu Plaster” for health maintenance, which is particularly suitable for those with Kidney Yang deficiency.
Many cases of Kidney Yang deficiency are caused by excessive dampness obstructing the flow of Yang Qi. What Chinese patent medicines can help eliminate dampness from the body?
1. Ping Wei San (Pingwei Powder)
This formula primarily consists of Cang Zhu (Atractylodes) for dampness removal and Hou Po (Magnolia Bark) for promoting Qi and strengthening the spleen, making it suitable for those with dampness affecting the spleen and stomach and digestive dysfunction.
2. Huo Xiang Zheng Qi San (Agastache Correct Qi Powder)
This formula contains Bai Zhu (White Atractylodes), Fu Ling (Poria), Da Fu Pi (Areca Peel), and Huo Xiang (Agastache), combined with ginger juice to support Yang, and Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel) and Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica) to promote Qi and harmonize the middle. It can dispel exterior pathogens, eliminate dampness, and regulate Qi.
3. Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria)
This formula consists of Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Fu Ling (Poria), Bai Zhu (White Atractylodes), Ze Xie (Alisma), and Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig). Zhu Ling and Fu Ling are effective in clearing water dampness, Bai Zhu has strong damp-drying properties, Ze Xie promotes urination and drains dampness, and Gui Zhi helps to warm Yang and transform Qi. It is commonly used for symptoms such as edema, facial swelling, difficulty urinating, and loose stools caused by excessive dampness.
