Their tongue is pale red, swollen, with tooth marks on the edges, and their pulse is weak and slow. This is the Qi deficiency constitution. Such individuals prefer quiet environments, feel uncomfortable eating or drinking cold foods, tend to have loose stools, and their urine is clear. They are often introverted and melancholic.
【Disease Tendencies】Prone to colds, with weak resistance to illness and difficulty recovering. They may also suffer from organ prolapse, such as gastric ptosis.
【Nurturing Methods】
1.Eat more foods that tonify Qi and strengthen the spleen, such as soybeans, white lentils, shiitake mushrooms, jujubes, longan, and honey.
2.Engage in gentle exercises like walking or Tai Chi, and regularly massage the Zusanli (足三里) point.
3.Those who sweat easily or frequently catch colds can take Yu Ping Feng San (玉屏风散) for prevention.
2. Balanced Constitution
【Constitution Identification】 Energetic, with good sleep. The body is well-proportioned and robust, with a healthy complexion. The eyes are bright, the sense of smell is acute, the tongue is pale red with a thin white coating, the pulse is harmonious, and the lips are rosy. They are not easily fatigued, have abundant energy, good sleep and appetite, normal bowel and bladder functions, and a cheerful disposition. They are less prone to illness, but should not neglect regular health maintenance and good dietary habits.

【Nurturing Methods】
1.Do not overeat or starve; avoid excessively cold or hot foods.
2.Eat more whole grains, vegetables, and fruits, and limit greasy and spicy foods. Young people can choose running or ball games, while the elderly should engage in moderate walking or Tai Chi.
3. Phlegm-Damp Constitution
【Constitution Identification】Individuals with a phlegm-damp constitution are often overweight with a soft abdomen, oily skin, and tend to sweat excessively. They may have puffy eyes and feel drowsy. Symptoms include chest tightness, excessive phlegm, a sticky or sweet taste in the mouth, and a heavy body. Their complexion may be pale yellow or dull, with normal or loose stools and little or cloudy urine. The tongue is swollen with a white greasy coating, and the pulse is slippery.
【Disease Tendencies】Prone to diabetes, stroke, and chest obstruction.
【Nurturing Methods】
1.Maintain a light diet, consuming more foods like scallions, garlic, seaweed, winter melon, radishes, kumquats, and mustard.
2.Limit fatty meats and sweet, sticky, or greasy foods.
3.Consider using phlegm-resolving and damp-dispelling formulas. The most notable characteristic of phlegm-damp individuals is their “broad and plump” appearance with a soft abdomen.
4. Damp-Heat Constitution
【Constitution Identification】 The damp-heat constitution is characterized by a body that is either overweight or emaciated, with an oily face and nose, prone to acne and sores. The tongue is red with a yellow greasy coating, and the pulse is often slippery and rapid. Symptoms include a bitter taste in the mouth, dry mouth, bad breath, fatigue, red eyes, sticky stools, and a burning sensation during urination. Individuals may have a quick temper, and men may experience dampness in the scrotum, while women may have increased yellowish vaginal discharge.

【Nurturing Methods】
1.Maintain a light diet, consuming more cooling and neutral foods such as mung beans, water spinach, amaranth, celery, cucumbers, winter melon, lotus root, and watermelon. Limit spicy and warming foods.
2.Avoid smoking and drinking, and do not stay up late or overwork.
3.Engage in moderate long-distance running, swimming, hiking, and various ball sports. Daily use of Liu Yi San (六一散), Qing Wei San (清胃散), and Gan Lu Xiao Du Dan (甘露消毒丹) is recommended.

They are also prone to insomnia.

1.Eat more cooling and moistening foods, such as mung beans, winter melon, sesame, and lily bulbs. Limit warming and drying foods.
2.Maintain a regular midday rest and avoid staying up late.
3.During intense exercise, control sweating and replenish fluids promptly.
4.Consider taking Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (六味地黄丸) or Qi Ju Di Huang Wan (杞菊地黄丸) as needed.
6. Qi Stagnation Constitution
【Constitution Identification】Individuals with a qi stagnation constitution are often slender and have a poor ability to adapt to mental stress. They frequently feel gloomy, sigh without reason, are sentimental, melancholic, and sensitive. They may feel fearful or easily startled, experience palpitations and insomnia, and have a sensation of fullness or pain in the chest and ribs, belching, or a feeling of obstruction in the throat. They may also experience breast tenderness, poor sleep, and dry stools. Their tongue is pale red with a thin white coating, and their pulse is thin and wiry.

1.Eat more foods that promote Qi circulation, relieve stagnation, aid digestion, and invigorate the spirit, such as wheat, scallions, garlic, seaweed, radishes, kumquats, and hawthorn.
2.Avoid stimulating beverages like tea and coffee before bedtime.
7. Yang Deficiency Constitution
【Constitution Identification】Individuals with a yang deficiency constitution are often quiet and introverted, with a pale complexion and weak muscles. They frequently feel lethargic and are sensitive to cold, often having cold hands and feet. They prefer warm foods and drinks, feel uncomfortable with cold foods, may experience loose stools, and have clear and abundant urine. Their tongue is pale and swollen with tooth marks, and their pulse is deep, slow, and weak.

1.Eat more warming and Qi-tonifying foods, such as scallions, ginger, garlic, Sichuan pepper, leeks, chili peppers, and black pepper.
2.Limit raw and cold foods like cucumbers, lotus root, pears, and watermelon.
3.Self-massage the Qihai (气海), Zusanli (足三里), and Yongquan (涌泉) points, or regularly moxibustion on Zusanli and Guanyuan (关元).
8. Allergic Constitution
【Constitution Identification】Individuals with an allergic constitution are prone to allergies, such as pollen allergies, asthma, and skin conditions like urticaria. They may frequently sneeze and have a runny nose even without a cold. They may also have congenital physiological defects or hereditary diseases with vertical inheritance, and maternal influences on fetal growth and related disease characteristics. This special constitution is referred to as “Te Bing Constitution” in TCM.

【Nurturing Methods】
1.Maintain a light and balanced diet, with appropriate combinations of coarse and fine grains, and a reasonable mix of meat and vegetables.

They may have red streaks in their eyes, and often feel pain, forgetfulness, and irritability. Women may experience dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, or dark clots in menstrual blood. 1.Eat more foods that invigorate blood circulation, dissolve masses, promote Qi flow, and soothe the liver, such as black beans, kelp, nori, radishes, carrots, hawthorn, vinegar, and green tea.
2.Limit fatty pork and ensure adequate sleep.
3.Consider taking Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan (桂枝茯苓丸) and other formulas.
