Cang Zhu (Atractylodes)
【Scientific Name】Cang Zhu (Atractylodes)
【Aliases】Chi Zhu, Xian Zhu, Mao Zhu, Guan Nan Zhu, Xian Jiang.
【Source】It is the dried rhizome of the Asteraceae plant, either Cang Zhu (Atractylodes lancea) or Bei Zhu (Atractylodes macrocephala). Harvested in spring and autumn, cleaned of soil, dried, and the fibrous roots removed.
【Preparation】Remove impurities, wash clean, soak, cut into thick slices, and dry.
【Properties and Channels】Flavor: Spicy and Bitter; Nature: Warm; Channels: Spleen, Stomach, Liver.
【Functions and Indications】Dries dampness, strengthens the spleen, dispels wind and cold, and improves vision. Used for damp obstruction in the middle jiao, abdominal distension, diarrhea, edema, beriberi, rheumatic pain, wind-cold common cold, night blindness, and blurred vision.
【Dosage】Internal use, decocted, 5-10g.
【Common Accompanying Formulas】
1. Cang Zhu Decoction
Ingredients: Cang Zhu 10g.
Preparation: Decoct in water for 30 minutes, take the juice, and consume warm in two doses within a day.
Effect: Treats abdominal distension, dampness obstructing the spleen, and loss of appetite.
2. Xian Zhu Powder
Ingredients: Cang Zhu, Mu Zei, Gan Cao each 30g, Chan Yi, Gu Jing Cao each 0.3g, Huang Qin 15g, She Tui 3g.
Preparation: Grind the above herbs into powder, take 1.5g twice daily with warm water.
Effect: Improves vision, treats blurred vision.
3. Shen Zhu Decoction
Ingredients: Prepared Cang Zhu, Fang Feng each 30g, Gan Cao 15g, Sheng Jiang, Cong Bai each 6g.
Preparation: Place the herbs in a clay pot, decoct in water for 30 minutes, take the juice, and consume warm in two doses within a day.
Effect: Treats exterior wind-cold invasion.
4. Cang Zhu Pill
Ingredients: Prepared Cang Zhu 30g, Shen Qu 15g.
Preparation: Grind the two ingredients into powder, mix with honey to form pills, take 9g three times daily with warm water or rice soup.
Effect: Treats abdominal coldness and lack of appetite.
【Precautions】
1. Contraindicated for those with yin deficiency and internal heat, or qi deficiency with excessive sweating.
2. Chinese herbal sachets can generally be used for half a month to a month; as the fragrance dissipates, the efficacy decreases, so it is recommended to replace the sachet when the scent weakens. Not suitable for pregnant women and those prone to allergies.
3. When using externally, keep away from flammable materials and pay attention to fire safety. Close doors and windows during smoking, and personnel should temporarily avoid the area. Not suitable for pregnant women and those prone to allergies.
