The Wind-Cold common cold is often caused by exposure to cold, typically presenting with severe chills, mild fever, no sweating, nasal congestion, runny nose, and a preference for warm drinks.
Treatment can be achieved through moxibustion at Dazhui (大椎), Feishu (肺俞), Fengmen (风门), Fengchi (风池), and Hegu (合谷) points.
1. Dazhui (大椎) Point
Located below the spinous process of the 7th cervical vertebra on the posterior midline, Dazhui is the meeting point of the Governing Vessel (督脉) and all Yang meridians, governing the Yang energy of the body. It has a strengthening effect on Yang and is one of the key points for health maintenance. Moxibustion at Dazhui can effectively enhance the body’s immunity and prevent influenza.
2. Feishu (肺俞) Point
Located on the back at the level of the 3rd thoracic vertebra, 1.5 cun lateral to the spinous process, Feishu is where the Qi of the lungs emerges from the back, governing the body’s defensive Qi and protecting the body’s righteous Qi from external pathogens.
3. Fengmen (风门) Point
Located 1.5 cun lateral to the spinous process of the 2nd thoracic vertebra, Fengmen is the gateway for wind pathogens. Moxibustion at this point can disperse wind and cold, treating Wind-Cold common cold.
4. Fengchi (风池) Point
Located at the nape of the neck, in the depression between the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles, this point can release the exterior and disperse cold, treating symptoms such as headache and neck pain caused by colds.
5. Hegu (合谷) Point
Located on the back of the hand, between the first and second metacarpal bones, at the midpoint of the radial side of the second metacarpal bone.
When performing moxibustion, if there is nasal congestion on the left side, moxibustion should be done on the right Hegu point. If the right side is congested, moxibustion should be done on the left hand.
Moxibustion can be performed using a portable moxa stick or gentle moxa, for 10-15 minutes per point until the cold is resolved. Alternatively, a moxa stick can be used for two points, which is simple and convenient.
It is important to note that with the recent low temperatures, care should be taken to keep warm before, during, and after moxibustion to prevent cold from entering the body and worsening cold symptoms.
