“Bloodletting at the Four Seam Points” has always been used to treat children’s food accumulation and poor appetite.
I remember over twenty years ago, an elder sister who loved TCM taught me how to “bloodlet at the Four Seam Points” and did it on me. I felt no change in my body and thought that “bloodletting at the Four Seam Points” was only suitable for children, not adults.
The Four Seam Points commonly used to treat children’s food accumulationare also suitable for adults.
It wasn’t until two years ago that I saw a netizen say they used the Four Seam method to enhance their 27-year-old son’s appetite, which made me reconsider the importance of “bloodletting at the Four Seam Points.” After that, I started doing it on myself and on my apprentices.
During the process, I visually observed everyone’s blood; indeed, only my blood was bright red, crystal clear, and the blood droplets stood upright, while my apprentices’ blood was dark, thin, and the droplets fell flat and scattered.
The next day, everyone had an improved appetite, felt that food was delicious, and felt hungry more easily, indicating that bloodletting at the Four Seam Points is equally effective for adults.
From last year to this year, I have performed bloodletting at the Four Seam Points on myself about five times, all during times when my appetite was not very good, and afterwards, my appetite improved.
My kidneys are not very good; every time I squeeze my little finger, water can be expelled. It seems that my kidneys, which have been sick since childhood, will not easily return to normal, and being able to coexist peacefully with them daily is commendable.
Later, I began to perform bloodletting at the Four Seam Points on patients who came for treatment, as I found that after “bloodletting at the Four Seam Points,” they could drink 2-3 bowls of ginger, red date, and longan soup.
If they did not undergo “bloodletting at the Four Seam Points,” most people could not drink that much ginger, red date, and longan soup. Because of poor appetite, my treatment progress was slow.
Now, “bloodletting at the Four Seam Points” has become my opening line when treating patients. By observing the quality of a person’s blood after “bloodletting at the Four Seam Points,” and checking which finger expels water, bubbles, or fatty particles, I can roughly assess their physical condition.
The relationship between the Four Seam Points and the five zang organs and six fu organs
I have also discovered that if there is a small blood vessel passing through the Four Seam Points, it indicates that the corresponding organ has long-term pathological changes. When bloodletting, I must aim for this small blood vessel, and a stream of blood will flow out, clearly unblocking the organ connected to that finger.
In treating many children, I also found that the amount of yellow fluid expelled from each finger is related to the child’s physical condition.
Let me repeat the correspondence between fingers and organs: (Don’t know how to locate the points? Follow the “Meridian Techniques” public account, click on point search, or input any acupoint to find it!)
○ Index Finger——Spleen and Stomach
The index finger is directly related to the digestive and absorption functions because the Large Intestine Meridian passes through it. Children with poor appetites tend to expel the most yellow fluid from the Four Seam Points on the index finger, while other fingers expel less or none.
○ Middle Finger——Heart
The Meridian Techniques public account indicates that the Heart Meridian passes through the middle finger, thus connecting to the heart, heart qi deficiency, and excess heart fire. The yellow fluid expelled from the Four Seam Points on the middle finger is abundant, and children often have a red tongue tip and easily develop hangnails, indicating they are prone to excess heat and irritability.
○ Ring Finger——Liver and Gallbladder
The ring finger is closely related to the Liver and Gallbladder as the Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian passes through it. The phenomenon of expelling a lot of yellow fluid from the ring finger is often seen in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), who tend to sweat a lot, are irritable, and have poor self-control.
○ Little Finger——Kidneys
The little finger is associated with the Kidney Meridian and Small Intestine Meridian, closely linked to the heart, kidneys, uterus, and testicles. A lot of yellow fluid expelled from the little finger is often seen in children with weak kidneys, enuresis, or nephritis.
○ Thumb’s Shaoshang Point——Throat
I never neglect the thumb when performing “bloodletting at the Four Seam Points,” but where is the Four Seam Point on the thumb? I don’t know, so I always prick the outer side of the thumb nail root at the “Shaoshang Point” to clear the meridians in the throat area, which is always beneficial.
Procedure for Bloodletting at the Four Seam Points
① First, wrap a cotton thread around the base of the index finger and tighten it.
② Disinfect the area between the index finger’s joints with an alcohol swab.
③ Once the alcohol dries, use a “blood glucose needle” to prick the center of the joint.
④ Squeeze out blood; usually, 4-6 drops are sufficient.
⑤ Then, repeat the same method on the middle finger, ring finger, little finger, and thumb, and then do the same on the other hand.
Note: For individuals with weak bodies, it is safer to perform bloodletting after drinking ginger, red date, and longan soup; those who are too weak may faint at the sight of blood.
Classic Cases of Using the Four Seam Points for Treatment
[Case 1] Cured of stubborn gastritis after more than ten years
Once, a friend suffered from gastroesophageal reflux gastritis for over ten years, taking medication for over a decade without improvement. I relied on “bloodletting at the Four Seam Points,” combined with moxibustion and dietary therapy, and cured it completely in just two days. It has been six months since then without a recurrence.
I found small blood vessels at the Four Seam Points on his ring finger and pricked directly. Blood gushed out immediately. I felt that this one needle played a crucial role in curing his gastroesophageal reflux gastritis, indicating that there is a certain relationship between gastroesophageal reflux and liver meridian stagnation.
Afterwards, I advised him to avoid all cold and cool foods, and to drink water infused with three roasted dates and ten longans daily, which helped to soothe the liver, regulate qi, and warm the spleen and stomach. With these measures, his stubborn gastroesophageal reflux gastritis never recurred, and he also simultaneously cured his severe insomnia.
[Case 2] Immediate effect, fever reduction in 15 minutes
Once, a friend’s daughter had a high fever, and after trying various methods, the fever would not subside. I asked over the phone if her whole body was burning hot, and she confirmed it was a dry heat. I suggested trying “bloodletting at the Four Seam Points.”
She later told me that when she pricked the ring finger, blood gushed out, which scared them quite a bit. However, after 15 minutes, her fever began to subside, and within half an hour, her temperature dropped from 40°C to 36°C, and she did not have another fever.
This seems to indicate that this dry heat is related to excess liver fire; by reducing liver fire, the fever can also be alleviated.
[Case 3] Emergency pain relief case
Mr. Wei, 46 years old, a staff member of this hospital. Generally thin, with spleen and stomach deficiency and cold.
One night in February 2004, after excessive drinking, he experienced severe stomach pain and went to the emergency room, where he received an atropine injection for relief. The next morning around 7 AM, the pain returned, worse than before, and he could not walk.
He requested my consultation, and I performed bloodletting at the Four Seam Points. When I finished one hand, the pain lessened, and after finishing both hands, the pain completely stopped.
[Case 4] Abdominal distension for 4 years, treated with “bloodletting at the Four Seam Points + moxibustion + cupping,” with no recurrence
Ms. Fan, 47 years old, a bank officer.
Main complaint: abdominal distension for over 4 years. When the distension was severe, her abdomen would swell significantly, with poor sleep and constipation. Percussion revealed a tympanic sound, and the patient was in great pain.
Various examinations ruled out organic disease, and treatment with both Chinese and Western medicine showed no significant effect, with symptoms fluctuating.
In March 2004, her symptoms worsened, accompanied by headaches and periumbilical pain, and she was referred to me for treatment.
After performing bloodletting at the Four Seam Points, I added moxibustion on Shenque and Zusanli, and cupping on the back. After one treatment, her abdominal distension significantly reduced, and after ten treatments, all symptoms disappeared. Follow-up has shown no recurrence.
[Case 5] Vomiting case
Ms. Chen, 34 years old, from Hongtong, comes from a wealthy family. Due to conflicts with her husband, she had long-term reduced food intake, which later developed into vomiting whenever she ate, with symptoms fluctuating for nearly 3 years.
In July 2003, her vomiting became severe, leading to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, and she was admitted to my hospital’s special care ward. Upon examination, she was found with a basin at her side, continuously salivating, mostly gastric fluid and saliva, appearing lethargic, pale, with a pale tongue and little coating, and a weak, rapid pulse.
After one treatment using the above method, her salivation significantly decreased, and after two needle treatments, she stopped vomiting. A total of seven treatments led to her recovery and discharge. After discharge, she continued with herbal therapy and has not relapsed since.
[Case 6] Anorexia case
Ms. Zhang, 8 years old, a student, consulted in May 2003.
Her mother reported that the patient had no appetite and showed no interest in any food, was thin, had a large head, chicken breast, pale complexion, and was easily susceptible to colds.
Bloodletting at the Four Seam Points was performed, and three fingers expelled a white, watery liquid.
After one treatment, her appetite improved, and after three treatments, no white liquid was expelled. Afterward, she was given three doses of herbal decoction for conditioning and recovered.
Now she looks like a different person, with a rosy complexion and significant increases in height and weight, and she rarely catches colds.
Insights on Bloodletting at the Four Seam Points
Today, I pricked each blood vessel around the Four Seam Points on every finger to observe the reactions. I found that when pricking the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and little finger directly at the blood vessels, blood did not flow out. However, when pricking the ring finger’s blood vessel, blood flowed out, but not with much force.
I realized that as long as the pathways within the body are clear, even if pricking directly at the blood vessels, blood will not flow out. If any organ is not functioning smoothly, whether pricking at the Four Seam Points or around them, blood will flow out. The greater the force of the blood flow, the more severe the corresponding organ’s blockage.
Recently, I felt an increase in internal heat due to trying moxibustion, which caused some excess liver fire, leading to a reaction in the ring finger’s blood vessel.
The body is truly amazing; the more I study, the more interesting it becomes.
However, since today I only pricked the blood vessels around the Four Seam Points and did not prick the Four Seam Points themselves, I found there is still a difference:
① Pricking the Four Seam Points opens the appetite and unblocks the meridians;
② Only pricking the blood vessels around the Four Seam Points does not open the appetite, but clearly reduces heat and also expels some qi;
③ Pricking both the Four Seam Points and the surrounding blood vessels opens the appetite, unblocks the meridians, and reduces heat.
Scope of Treatment for the Four Seam Points
I personally feel that “bloodletting at the Four Seam Points” not only has the effect of enhancing appetite but also significantly unblocks the meridians. When used appropriately, it can treat many ailments.
The treatment range of the Four Seam Points is gradually expanding beyond just treating children’s malnutrition and whooping cough.
Conditions such as stomach pain, abdominal pain, abdominal distension, throat pain, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, hiccups, heat stroke, fever, cold, asthma, and pediatric convulsions have shown remarkable effects. Some have even found it effective for treating insomnia, neurasthenia, boils, gout, and menstrual irregularities.
Treatment course: Generally 1-2 times a week; for severe cases, 1-2 times daily. A course of treatment consists of 5-7 sessions.
It must be reiterated that strict disinfection is essential; bloodletting at the Four Seam Points is prohibited for patients with bleeding tendencies or blood disorders. (For more content, please follow the Meridian Techniques public account)
