Understanding Daoyin Anjiao from a Western Medicine Perspective (Part 1)

Introduction

Recently, I stumbled upon a small sharing I wrote three years ago. At that time, I had just started learning Daoyin Anjiao (导引按蹻), practicing it daily, and was in a passionate relationship with acupuncture points. Reading articles back then, you could feel the curiosity and excitement of a TCM novice, along with a certain naivety!

In August three years ago, I was first introduced to Daoyin Anjiao, a method of treating diseases by pressing acupuncture points with a single finger. I was skeptical. As a Western medicine practitioner, I needed logic and evidence; this method seemed a bit mystical. However, I later learned that it is indeed profound and full of wonders!

I officially believed in the effectiveness of Daoyin Anjiao during a meeting. One morning, I woke up with a stiff neck, unable to turn my head without moving my whole body. I arrived at the meeting like this, and the president of the Lanzhou Zheng’an Gathering, Wang Hong, noticed my immobility. He pressed his middle finger on my Tian Zong (天宗穴) point, and within five minutes, I felt a gentle current flowing from my shoulder to my fingers, much more comfortable than electricity. Miraculously, half an hour later, my neck was free to move.

In October of the same year, the first offline beginner class for Daoyin Anjiao was held in Lanzhou. I met the real-life teacher, Master Fu, who inherited this ‘mystical art.’ From then on, I boldly advanced on the path of learning Daoyin Anjiao, not just acquiring knowledge but also enjoying the process! Since I started learning Daoyin Anjiao, I have been able to resolve my own health issues, and my family has benefited as well. My mother suffers from bradycardia (窦性心动过缓), with a heart rate of only 50 beats per minute. The hospital suggested a pacemaker over a decade ago. After a consultation with Master Fu, he provided five sets of acupuncture point prescriptions. After cycling through them five times, my mother’s heart rate increased to 58-60 beats per minute, and she appeared much more energetic. I remember that winter, my mother lay on the sofa, sunlight streaming through the window onto her. She fell asleep shortly, and as I watched my elderly mother bathed in sunlight, I felt immense happiness. That was the warmest moment I had shared with her over the years. Additionally, attending Master Fu’s classes was incredibly enjoyable! From Acupuncture Point Codes (穴位密码) to Zang Xiang Theory (藏象学), his voice became my background music while doing housework, making life much less dull! I laughed out loud many times at his stories!

I also used Daoyin Anjiao to treat colleagues for issues like dysmenorrhea, rhinitis, stomach pain, and oral ulcers… Whenever I was uncertain, I consulted Teacher Xiao Jun. Notably, in May of this year, a classmate of mine had a high fever of 40°C. After the fever was reduced at the county hospital, she developed anuria and was diagnosed with acute renal failure, transferred to the provincial hospital’s ICU. When I visited her, she, usually lively and cheerful, was lying there with various tubes attached, looking pale and murmuring, ‘Save me!’ I quickly took her pulse, which was weak at both the cun and chi positions, and she had persistent vomiting. After discussing with Teacher Xiao, we first tonified (补) the Neiguan (内关) point for over an hour, as she had damp-heat in her body. Then we tonified (补) the Taiyuan (太渊) and Taixi (太溪) points, feeling a deep chill. After nearly four hours of treatment, she was able to urinate and expressed a desire to drink water, feeling a sense of relief in her chest. That night, I left the hospital after eleven o’clock. The early summer night sky was so clear after a light rain, with stars twinkling. I remembered how I often gazed at the starry sky in high school, pondering the secrets of the vast universe. When choosing my major, I initially wanted to study astronomy and physics to understand the celestial bodies, but I succumbed to my father’s persuasion and filled out medical school applications, which has always been a regret in my heart! A cool breeze blew, and I suddenly realized that the human body is a small universe, and those acupuncture points are like the sun and moon in our bodies. Learning Daoyin Anjiao has fulfilled my youthful dream!
