Understanding Damp-Heat
Damp and Heat are two distinct pathogenic factors; each can be eliminated individually (by expelling dampness or clearing heat), but when they intertwine, it becomes very difficult to regulate. Ancient texts have long discussed damp-heat, stating, “Damp and heat stew together, like oil wrapped in flour,” and “due to dampness, it feels like being wrapped; when heat prevails, there is swelling.” When dampness and heat combine, it is like oil mixing with flour, making it hard to separate. When dampness is excessive, the head feels wrapped; when heat is excessive, the body experiences a sensation of swelling. This swelling includes not only edema but also the formation of lumps and acne, as the body cannot expel it and must find an outlet. Prolonged dampness inevitably generates heat; if the spleen is deficient and dampness is excessive without regulation, it will eventually evolve into a damp-heat constitution. A vivid analogy: damp-heat is like a pile of straw in the countryside, soaked by rain, where reaching in feels overwhelmingly hot and humid.
Symptoms of Damp-Heat Constitution: Please self-assess, thank you
1. Stools are sticky and unsatisfactory, always feeling unclean after a bowel movement, and it is difficult to flush away.
2. Repeated occurrences of acne, boils, and sores on the tongue and mouth.
3. Oily hair and shiny skin, especially on the nose and forehead, with washing being ineffective.
4. Yellow and greasy tongue coating, with a red tongue body.
5. Irritable temperament and lack of patience.
6. Bitter taste in the mouth or unusual odors, even halitosis.
7. During urination, there is a burning sensation in the urethra, and the urine is dark yellow.
8. Skin often itches for no apparent reason.
If you meet more than four of these criteria, you can be classified as having a damp-heat constitution. These symptoms should be frequent; occasional occurrences do not count.
The above are common symptoms; damp-heat can vary and is not limited to the spleen and stomach. It can also manifest as liver and gallbladder damp-heat (leading to jaundice), damp-heat descending (causing excessive yellow vaginal discharge, prostatitis, genital dampness, menstrual irregularities), large intestine damp-heat (hemorrhoids, moist anus), bladder damp-heat (painful urination), lower limb damp-heat (athlete’s foot), and cardiovascular damp-heat (angina), etc. Targeted treatment plans will be proposed later.
Differences in Damp-Heat Between Thin and Overweight Individuals:
Thin individuals with abscesses: Deep-seated pus-filled abscesses are essentially caused by damp-heat, which can easily harm the liver and gallbladder, evolving into cholecystitis or hepatitis. Thin individuals often have insufficient qi and blood or body fluids, making treatment more challenging due to its hidden nature.
Overweight individuals with carbuncles: Red, swollen, hot, and painful, with pus that can drain. Overweight individuals have excessive qi and blood, which tends to flow outward, manifesting as carbuncles. This is a yang condition that will eventually self-abscess, which is, in fact, a good thing as it provides an outlet for damp-heat.
1. “Yang deficiency easily leads to cold dampness, while yin deficiency easily leads to damp-heat”
“Wherever evil gathers, its qi must be deficient.”
Damp-heat, as a pathogenic factor, can invade the human body primarily due to insufficient righteous qi, which refers to kidney yin deficiency. This means that the yin essence is insufficient to support yang, failing to provide a sufficient material basis for the generation of yang qi. This results in yang qi being hyperactive yet empty, unable to transform food and fluids into essence, ultimately leading to water dampness. When water dampness encounters yang (heat), it becomes damp-heat, which injures the spleen, leading to spleen deficiency, further impairing the transformation of essence, creating a vicious cycle. Why is there yin deficiency? Why is there insufficient yin fluid? This situation is common, as excessive indulgence and staying up late can deplete yin fluids. Symptoms of yin deficiency include irritability, insomnia, night sweats, tinnitus, and weight loss.
Solution approach: If you have a damp-heat constitution along with symptoms of yin deficiency, you should first nourish yin and supplement yin, and then expel dampness and strengthen the spleen. Merely expelling dampness and strengthening the spleen addresses the symptoms but not the root cause.
2. Congenital constitution factors
Everyone has different innate gifts and constitutions, and maternal influence is significant. There is a saying, “If the mother is cold, the child is cold; if the mother is hot, the child is hot.” If one is born with a damp-heat constitution, it can be quite troublesome to regulate. From another perspective, female friends with damp-heat should take care to regulate it seriously, or it may be passed on to the next generation.
3. Excessive consumption of rich, spicy, and fatty foods/alcohol
*Rich and fatty foods: Such as pork belly, fried foods, and greasy dishes, which can easily burden the spleen, leading to spleen deficiency and inability to transform.
*Excessive alcohol consumption. The fermentation process of alcohol is a damp-heat process, and drinking too much can easily lead to internal damp-heat.
*Excessive spicy foods. For example, hot pot, spicy skewers, and boiled fish, especially since the base ingredients are often spicy, can harm the spleen and stomach, leading to spleen deficiency.
*Excessive sweet and greasy foods. Such as cakes, durian, and mango.
*Seafood. Cold and raw foods harm yang, leading to insufficient spleen yang, which can cause damp-heat.
*Barbecue. Especially in summer, enjoying skewers and beer late into the night can lead to problems over time.
*Irregular eating habits, overeating, and poor digestion can accumulate within the body, breeding damp-heat.
4. Staying up late harms yin
I have encountered many older friends who regret not understanding the consequences of excessive indulgence and staying up late in their youth, resulting in various problems later on: First, I repeat for the thousandth time: Please do not stay up late!
5. Liver Qi stagnation
Poor emotions lead to liver qi stagnation, resulting in qi stagnation and blood stasis, which inevitably affects the spleen and stomach’s transformation, causing damp-heat with no way out. Solution: Soothe the liver, regulate qi, invigorate blood, strengthen the spleen, and clear heat and resolve dampness.
6. Poor living environment
This falls under external dampness. External dampness can also harm the body. The southern climate is humid and hot, especially with heavy rainfall in summer, which can lead to damp-heat, causing many people to develop acne on their faces.
People from the north moving to the south may initially find it easy to develop a damp-heat constitution due to the unfamiliar environment. Long-term residence near the sea, where humidity is high, can also lead to a damp-heat constitution.Solution: Since the environment cannot be changed, find ways to prevent and expel dampness.
7. Air conditioning
The advent of air conditioning has changed the way humans interact with nature. In summer, sweating is natural, and yang qi should flourish. However, with air conditioning, the temperature is too low, preventing sweat from being released, which can lead to damp-heat over time.Solution: Air conditioning can be used, but do not set the temperature too low.
8. Random supplementation
Not all constitutions are suitable for supplementation. For example, in a damp-heat constitution, supplementation is like pouring oil on a fire; the body is already too hot, and with spleen deficiency unable to transform, adding more will only exacerbate damp-heat symptoms. Before nourishing, it is essential to assess the situation! One should have independent thinking; analyze specific situations rather than follow trends.
9. Random medication
*Many medications are cooling and can harm yang; insufficient spleen yang will also be unable to transform water and dampness, leading to heat over time.
*Some medications can assist yang, leading to yang hyperactivity and yin deficiency, which generates damp-heat.
Therefore, please do not take medications on your own, including some Chinese patent medicines, especially not for long-term use.
