Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Treatment for Flat Warts
Author/Le Yangzi
The patient is the daughter of a classmate of the author, aged 9. The patient developed flat warts on her face at the age of 5, which increased in number over time. Treatments including cryotherapy, topical medications, and puncturing the warts with steel needles were ineffective, and the condition recurred.
Diagnosis: The patient is small in stature, with a pale complexion and a slightly greasy white tongue coating.
Diagnosis: Flat warts.
Pattern Differentiation: Spleen Qi deficiency with dampness obstructing the skin. The spleen’s inability to transport water and dampness further obstructs its function, leading to dampness infiltrating the Stomach meridian of the Yangming.
Treatment: Strengthen the spleen and transform dampness, harmonize the spleen and stomach.
Prescription: Modified Xiao Jian Zhong Tang (Minor Construct the Middle Decoction). Ingredients include: Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig) 10g, Bai Shao (White Peony) 20g, Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) 6g, Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-Fried Licorice) 6g, Da Zao (Jujube) 4 pieces, Mai Ya (Barley Sprout) 50g, Bai Zhu (White Atractylodes) 10g, Fu Ling (Poria) 10g, Sheng Yi Ren (Job’s Tears) 50g, Chi Xiao Dou (Adzuki Bean) 30g. A total of 6 doses, taken 1 dose per day, divided into 3 servings.
Acupuncture: First, needle the blood Dong’s unique acupuncture point, Zhi Wu (Control Filth) point 3 times (indicated for wounds that do not scab), then apply intradermal needles at Si Ma (Four Horses) point. A total of 3 treatments, once daily.
The patient took 17 doses of medicine and underwent acupuncture treatment 3 times, resulting in complete recovery.
Follow-up with the patient for 3 years, with no recurrence.
Note: The patient’s condition was due to spleen deficiency obstructing its transport function. Bai Zhu and Fu Ling strengthen the spleen and transform dampness, while large doses of Sheng Yi Ren and Chi Xiao Dou can drain dampness, allowing the spleen to function properly. Once the spleen is functioning well, the spleen and stomach harmonize, and the flat warts on the face can be eliminated. The Si Ma point, with 6 needles on each side, invigorates lung Qi to strengthen the skin’s meridian Qi; the Zhi Wu point, as the name suggests, treats various phlegm-damp or blood stasis conditions that prevent skin healing. The combination of these therapies can strengthen the spleen, transform dampness, distribute lung Qi, and eliminate filth. Thus, the patient’s 4-year stubborn condition was cured in 17 days.
