Today, I will teach you two commonly used methods in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to determine whether you have a blood stasis constitution, as well as how to differentiate and treat six common types of blood stasis syndromes. Let’s learn together!
First, let’s discuss the method for judging blood stasis. You can feel the pulse on the dorsum of your foot by tracing the area between the big toe and the second toe upwards. At this moment, calm your mind and feel the fluctuations of the pulse. If the pulsation gradually slows down, it indicates that you may have blood stasis in your body. Some may find this method too difficult, so I will share a simpler method: observing the tongue. If your tongue is dark purple, has patches on it, and the veins under the tongue are prominently raised and purple, this also indicates the presence of blood stasis in your body.
So, what should you do at this point? In TCM, we emphasize syndrome differentiation and treatment. The treatment methods for blood stasis caused by different reasons vary. Below, I will explain in detail how to address blood stasis caused by different factors.
First, Qi stagnation leading to blood stasis. If you often get angry, have significant emotional fluctuations, frequently feel a tightness in your chest, experience pain in the sides of your ribs when angry, and easily develop spots on your face, then look in the mirror at your tongue. If the sides of your tongue are noticeably higher than the middle, this is likely due to liver Qi stagnation causing blood stasis. We should focus on soothing the liver, regulating Qi, and invigorating blood circulation, which can be supported by the use of Xuefu Zhuyu Wan (Blood Mansion Removing Stasis Pill).
Second, phlegm-dampness causing stasis. If you are overweight, often feel heavy and sluggish, love to sleep, and even after long sleep still feel tired, have a sticky feeling in your mouth, experience edema in your limbs, and have sticky stools that often stick to the toilet, this is likely due to phlegm-dampness accumulation leading to Qi stagnation and subsequently blood stasis. Although this also falls under Qi stagnation and blood stasis, to address the root cause, we need to tackle the phlegm-dampness first, which can be aided by Xiao Jin Dan (Minor Golden Pill) that helps transform phlegm, disperse nodules, and invigorate blood circulation.
Third, Qi deficiency leading to blood stasis. Individuals with this condition often lack energy, are inactive, speak weakly, frequently experience dizziness and tinnitus, sweat easily, and sweat profusely with minimal exertion. Their complexion, lip color, and tongue body are pale, and the veins under the tongue may appear dark. This is commonly seen in Qi deficiency blood stasis. We say, “Qi is the commander of blood;” Qi deficiency leads to weak blood circulation, causing blood to stagnate in the vessels. At this time, we should focus on tonifying Qi, unblocking the vessels, and invigorating blood circulation, which can be supported by the use of Qi Shen Yi Qi Di Wan (Astragalus and Ginseng Qi Tonifying Pill).
Fourth, cold congealing blood stasis. The main characteristic of this type is a fear of cold, aversion to wind, a preference for warm water, and pain that worsens in cold weather, especially in the joints, which may feel like being pricked by needles. The extremities may also appear cyanotic or purplish, and women may experience dysmenorrhea. Their tongue color tends to be purple with a white coating. There is a saying, “Blood flows when warm and congeals when cold;” cold evil invading the body causes the meridians to constrict, narrowing the vessels and obstructing blood flow. At this time, we need to warm the meridians, invigorate blood circulation, and dispel cold to relieve pain, which can be supported by Shaofu Zhuyu Wan (Lower Abdomen Blood Stasis Dispelling Pill).
Fifth, heat in the blood causing stasis. This is the opposite of cold congealing blood stasis. Individuals with this condition fear heat, prefer cold drinks, have dryness in the mouth and throat, and may experience insomnia, dizziness, and headaches. Upon examining their tongue, it is often very red, indicating blood heat stasis. The blood becomes thick due to heat evil scorching it, leading to obstruction in the vessels. At this time, we need to clear heat, drain fire, and invigorate blood circulation, which can be supported by Liangxue Jiedu Keli (Cooling Blood and Detoxifying Granules).
Sixth, trauma leading to blood stasis. This is straightforward; after an injury, the affected area may exhibit bruising and swelling, and symptoms such as fever, dizziness, and headaches may also occur. This is due to external force damaging the meridians, preventing normal blood flow in the vessels and causing blood to seep outside the vessels, resulting in blood stasis. We can use Sanqi Fen (Notoginseng Powder) to stop bleeding, disperse stasis, and relieve pain.
