Recently, Ms. Li suffered from neck and right shoulder pain, which caused her sleepless nights. After applying topical ointments and taking painkillers without improvement, her daily life and work were greatly affected. To recover quickly, Ms. Li visited our Acupuncture Rehabilitation Department for treatment.
After diagnosis, it was determined that Ms. Li’s 颈部和右肩部疼痛 (neck and right shoulder pain) was due to the disharmony of Qi and blood in the neck, with 瘀血 (stagnation of blood) obstructing the neck, leading to blocked meridians and insufficient nourishment to the muscles and bones. In addition to conventional treatments, the Acupuncture Rehabilitation Department introduced 储药罐疗法 (Medicinal Cupping Therapy) for Ms. Li.
The medical staff used techniques such as 循经闪罐 (meridian cupping), 调理走罐 (regulatory cupping), and 辨证留罐 (diagnostic cupping) to promote blood circulation in Ms. Li’s neck and shoulder, allowing the medicinal liquid to fully permeate the skin surface. After a week of treatment, Ms. Li’s neck and right shoulder pain symptoms significantly improved, and her sleep quality and mental state also improved.
QUESTION
What is Medicinal Cupping Therapy?
ANSWER
To enhance the clinical efficacy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in treating diseases and better serve patients, the Acupuncture Rehabilitation Department introduced a unique nursing project in 2023—储药罐疗法 (Medicinal Cupping Therapy). This technique utilizes new technologies and projects within the hospital and has shown good clinical results.
Medicinal Cupping Therapy involves placing different herbal liquid components in a cup, using the negative pressure generated inside the cup for local transdermal absorption, and applying it to selected acupuncture points.
Advantages
Medicinal Cupping Therapy is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, combining the benefits of cupping and medicinal treatment. It is applied to meridians and acupoints, achieving clinical effects such as promoting Qi and blood circulation, resolving blood stasis, and unblocking meridians. It provides both the physical therapeutic effects of cupping and the permeation effects of medicinal treatment.
Effects
Promotes blood circulation and removes blood stasis, warms the meridians and disperses cold, expels wind and dampness, and alleviates pain.
Indications
Medicinal Cupping Therapy is effective for treating cervical spondylosis, lumbar disc herniation, shoulder periarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, soft tissue injuries, and various stubborn pain conditions.
Contraindications
Use with caution in pregnant women, contraindicated for those with allergic constitutions, skin ulcers, and active bleeding disorders.
