Vascular blockage is mostly caused by stasis blood (yuxue). Therefore, it is necessary to invigorate blood circulation and resolve stasis, and a herb known as the “good medicine for blood” comes to mind—Dan Shen (Salvia miltiorrhiza). Dan Shen is recognized in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as a herb that invigorates blood and resolves stasis. According to the Ben Cao Jing Shu, it is recorded: “Dan Shen is bitter and can drain, warm and can disperse, long-term use benefits energy, specifically enters the blood aspect, its function is to invigorate blood and promote blood flow.”
