Hello everyone, I am Lin Suifang, the Director of the Gastroenterology Department at a top-tier hospital.
As we age, the likelihood of blood stasis increases. Today, I will discuss the formula from Zhang Zhongjing’s work, “Jin Gui Yao Lue” — Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan.
In this formula, Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig) promotes blood circulation and resolves stasis, while Fu Ling (Poria) transforms phlegm and promotes urination. Together, they enhance the effects of phlegm transformation and diuresis. Tao Ren (Peach Kernel) and Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Root) invigorate blood and resolve stasis, while Shao Yao (Peony) alleviates pain. The entire formula works to resolve stasis, eliminate phlegm turbidity, and open the blood vessels.
Many people use Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan to treat gynecological diseases, such as uterine fibroids and cysts. In TCM, there is a saying, “Different diseases, same treatment.” The main function of Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan is to invigorate blood and resolve stasis, therefore it can treat any disease related to blood stasis.
Therefore, if you have the following conditions, you can consider using it for adjustment:
First, stabbing pain in the chest. It feels like being pricked by needles, radiating to the shoulder blades and causing pain in the back area.
Second, palpitations. Often feeling a tightness in the chest, with a darker complexion and lips.
Third, insomnia, unable to sleep at night, and even if you do fall asleep, you have many dreams and wake up in the middle of the night, unable to fall back asleep.
Fourth, dizziness and blurred vision, feeling heavy-headed, and even experiencing blackouts and blurred vision.
Fifth, if you have chronic constipation, with stools resembling sheep droppings, accompanied by a feeling of fullness in the lower abdomen, this is due to blood stasis obstructing the flow of body fluids, leading to insufficient fluids in the intestines.
However, medication should be used with caution. I once treated a 43-year-old Ms. Zeng, who heard about this TCM formula online and took Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan. As a result, after taking two boxes, her menstrual flow became alarmingly heavy, and she developed a sore throat and inflammation, feeling more fatigued and experiencing symptoms like dizziness, indigestion, and palpitations. She quickly stopped the medication and sought medical advice.
This friend’s condition was actually easy to treat, as the essence lies in deficiency not receiving nourishment, with a constitution of excess heat. For those with excess heat, using the warming and damp-transforming Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan is like adding fuel to the fire. The increased fatigue and exhaustion mentioned is due to deficiency not receiving nourishment.
Recommended formula: a modified combination of Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis), Shu Di Huang (Rehmannia), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum), Bai Shao (White Peony), Dan Shen (Salvia), and Xian Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena) was given. After two courses of treatment, Ms. Zeng reported that she no longer experienced heat symptoms, and her fatigue improved.
Thank you all for your patience in reading this. If you have any questions, feel free to share and read it a few more times.
I am Dr. Lin Suifang, Chief Physician of the Gastroenterology Department at Guangzhou Medical University Affiliated TCM Hospital. Women should pay attention to their menstrual health. I have seen many patients with early menstruation and heavy menstrual flow who only seek help when they are severely deficient due to excessive blood loss, as no one educates them and they are too shy to speak up. Excessive blood loss leads to a lack of nourishment for the organs, resulting in numerous diseases. By the time they reach extreme deficiency, it is difficult to treat.
