Acupuncture points are a crucial part of the human body, and health treatments based on these points are also an important therapy in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).There are over four hundred acupuncture points in the human body, each with different locations, functions, and levels of importance.However, the following ten acupuncture points are extremely significant in TCM and are the focus of health maintenance and wellness.
1. Zu San Li (足三里)
Located on the anterior lateral side of the lower leg, 3 cun below the knee joint, one finger breadth from the anterior border of the tibia.
Firstly, it supports the body’s vital energy and strengthens the spleen and stomach;
Secondly, it promotes metabolism and strengthens the body;
Thirdly, it enhances the function of the endocrine system and boosts immunity.
Stimulating Zu San Li has preventive and therapeutic effects on diseases of the digestive system, nervous system, blood system, circulatory system, endocrine system, urinary system, and reproductive system, especially for digestive system diseases, where its effects are particularly pronounced.
2. Guan Yuan (关元穴)
Located in the lower abdomen, on the anterior midline, 3 cun below the umbilicus.
Firstly, it nourishes the root and stabilizes the source.
Secondly, it tonifies the kidneys and strengthens yang, regulates menstruation, clears heat, and promotes dampness. This point is effective for nourishing the kidneys, stabilizing the foundation, regulating qi, and enhancing reproductive health.It is the place for men to store essence and for women to store blood.
Thirdly, it supplements deficiency and stabilizes the foundation.This point can enhance reproductive system function, improve immunity, prevent aging, and treat various deficiencies.
3. Zhong Wan (中脘穴)
Located in the upper abdomen, on the anterior midline, 4 cun above the umbilicus.
Firstly, it regulates the spleen and stomach;
Secondly, it descends counterflow and resolves stagnation.This point has the effects of harmonizing the stomach, tonifying deficiency, promoting digestion, and stopping vomiting.
4. Nei Guan (内关穴)
Located on the palmar side of the forearm, 2 cun above the wrist crease, on the line connecting Qu Chi (曲池) and Da Ling (大陵).
Firstly, it regulates qi and invigorates blood;
Secondly, it calms the spirit and stabilizes the mind.
5. He Gu (合谷穴)
When the index finger and thumb are brought together, a muscle bulge appears at the web of the hand, resembling a hill.
Firstly, it clears heat and releases the exterior;
Secondly, it relaxes the muscles and dispels wind, promoting gastrointestinal function.The primary function is to clear heat and relieve pain.
6. Yong Quan (涌泉穴)
Located on the sole of the foot, in the depression at the front of the foot when the toes are curled, approximately at the junction of the anterior 1/3 and posterior 2/3 of the line connecting the toes and the heel.
Firstly, it clears the mind and awakens the spirit;
Secondly, it calms the spirit and stabilizes the mind;
Thirdly, it clears heat and disperses wind.
Regular cupping on this point can guide the kidney’s empty fire and the turbid qi of the upper jiao downward, and has the effects of soothing the liver, brightening the eyes, clearing the throat, and calming the heart.It can lower blood pressure, promote local blood circulation, and help prevent age-related numbness and swelling of the hands and feet.
7. Yang Ling Quan (阳陵泉)
Located on the lateral side of the lower leg, in the depression just below the head of the fibula.
Firstly, it promotes circulation and relieves stiffness;Secondly, it clears heat and benefits the gallbladder.
8. Feng Chi (风池穴)
Located at the nape of the neck, just below the occipital bone, in the depression between the sternocleidomastoid muscle and the upper trapezius muscle.
Firstly, it clears the heart and brightens the eyes;Secondly, it clears heat and disperses wind;
Thirdly, it opens the orifices and promotes circulation.
9. Yin Men (殷门穴)
Located on the back of the thigh, on the line connecting Cheng Fu (承扶) and Wei Zhong (委中), 6 cun below Cheng Fu.
Firstly, it promotes circulation and relieves stiffness;
Secondly, it opens the meridians.
10. Ming Men (命门穴)
Located in the lower back, on the posterior midline, in the depression below the spinous process of the second lumbar vertebra.
Firstly, it tonifies the kidneys and regulates menstruation;
Secondly, it regulates the intestines and stabilizes prolapse.
