As the COVID-19 pandemic ravages the globe, our country has dispatched multiple medical teams carrying a large amount of medical supplies to assist overseas, among which the traditional Chinese medicines Lianhua Qingwen (Lianhua Qingwen) and Jinhua Qinggan (Jinhua Qinggan) derived from ancient formulas were included. This highlights the significant role of traditional Chinese medicine in combating the pandemic.
Following the previous article that introduced four of the nine major constitutions in TCM, today we will introduce the remaining five, hoping to assist you in understanding your constitution, learning health preservation, and enhancing your pandemic protection.
Pinghe Constitution (Balanced Type)
Proportion of the population: approximately 32.75%. Individuals with this constitution have a well-proportioned and robust physique, a rosy complexion, smooth skin, thick and shiny hair, bright eyes, abundant energy, good sleep, and appetite. They are easy-going and cheerful, with strong adaptability to both natural and social environments. They tend to be less prone to illness.
Xueyu Constitution (Stasis Type)
Proportion of the population: approximately 7.95%. Common manifestations include: the skin often shows purple spots, dryness and roughness, a dull complexion or pigmentation, dark circles under the eyes, and conjunctival injection; they may experience bleeding gums when brushing teeth; they tend to be irritable and forgetful. They are prone to bleeding disorders, strokes, coronary heart disease, etc. Health-preserving dietary recommendation: Hawthorn and brown sugar soup.
Tan Shi Constitution (Phlegm-Damp Type)
Proportion of the population: approximately 6.29%. Common manifestations include: excessive and sticky sweating, dampness and sweating in the palms and soles, a feeling of heaviness and fatigue in the limbs, an oily sensation on the face, a sticky or sweet taste in the mouth, and frequent phlegm production; they have poor adaptability to the rainy season and humid environments. They are prone to diabetes, strokes, dizziness, cough and asthma, gout, hypertension, coronary heart disease, etc. Health-preserving method: diet should be light, avoiding fatty meats and sweet, sticky, oily foods. Suitable medicinal dish: Yam and winter melon soup.
Shire Re Constitution (Damp-Heat Type)
Proportion of the population: approximately 9.88%. Common manifestations include: prone to acne, itchy skin; often experiencing a bitter taste in the mouth and bad breath; sticky and unsatisfactory stools, a burning sensation during urination, and yellow urine; they tend to be irritable. They are prone to sores, jaundice, and heat-related diseases. Health-preserving method: consume more red beans, celery, and lotus root, which are sweet and cool foods. Suitable medicinal dish: Loach stewed with tofu.
Te Bing Constitution (Allergic Type)
Proportion of the population: approximately 4.91%. Common manifestations include: frequent nasal congestion, sneezing, and runny nose; prone to allergies from medications, foods, odors, pollen, etc.; skin is prone to urticaria, and may leave scratch marks; may even experience respiratory distress, tachycardia, asthma, and fainting as acute critical symptoms. They are prone to asthma, influenza, etc. Health-preserving method: avoid spicy foods, fishy and strong-smelling foods, and foods containing allergens. Maintain a clean indoor environment to avoid allergens.
Innate endowments vary in strength, dietary flavors differ in thickness, geographical locations have differences, and temperaments vary, leading to differences in constitution.
