“The Yellow Emperor asked: I have heard of the Nine Needles and Nine Chapters, and you have thus divided them into nine, totaling eighty-one chapters, which I have comprehended. The classic states that the rise and fall of Qi can tilt left and right. The upper adjusts the lower, and the left adjusts the right. Where there is excess or deficiency, it is compensated or drained through the channels. I understand this. These are all shifts of the Ying Wei (Nourishing and Defensive Qi), arising from the vacuity and solidity, not from evil Qi entering the channels from outside. I wish to know how evil Qi exists in the channels and what the symptoms of the patient are. How should it be treated?” Qi Bo replied: “The sage’s measurements must correspond to heaven and earth; thus, heaven has its fixed degrees, the earth has its rivers, and humans have their meridians. When heaven is warm and earth is mild, the rivers are calm; when heaven is cold and earth is frozen, the rivers coagulate; when heaven is hot and earth is heated, the rivers boil and overflow; when sudden winds and storms arise, the rivers surge and swell. When evil enters the meridians, cold causes blood to coagulate, heat causes Qi to flow freely, and when vacuous evil enters as a guest, it is like the rivers encountering wind. The movement of the meridians is also sometimes surging, sometimes calm, and its flow in the meridians is variable, sometimes large, sometimes small; when large, evil is present; when small, it is balanced. Its flow is not constant, existing in Yin and Yang, and cannot be measured. Therefore, observe it through the three positions and nine pulses. When suddenly encountered, stop its path early. Inhale to retain the needle, do not let Qi be obstructed. Remain calm for a long time, do not let evil spread. Inhale to rotate the needle, to obtain Qi. When the pulse is called, it should be fully released; all Qi must exit, hence it is called draining.” — Huangdi Neijing: On the True Evil of Separation and Combination
(Continuing from the previous text) He continued to ask, “These are all shifts of the Ying Wei, arising from the vacuity and solidity, not from evil Qi entering the channels from outside,” he summarized, indicating that these changes and adjustments in the body belong to the excess of Ying Wei, which is the excess of Ying Qi and Wei Qi, formed by the vacuity and solidity of Qi and blood, and not due to evil Qi invading the channels from the outside.
Thus, the Yellow Emperor summarized the previous content and began to inquire, “I wish to know how evil Qi exists in the channels and what the symptoms of the patient are. How should it be treated?” (Please follow WeChat: pengxinboshi) At this moment, the Yellow Emperor asked what the symptoms of the patient are when evil Qi invades the meridians and how to treat it. Qi Bo began to answer, “The sage’s measurements must correspond to heaven and earth; thus, heaven has its fixed degrees, the earth has its rivers, and humans have their meridians.” Here, a key term is fixed degrees, referring to the positions of the stars, as ancient astronomy divided the celestial sphere into 365 degrees based on the positions of the stars, hence called fixed degrees. This means that heaven and earth are natural; Qi Bo first mentions heaven, then earth, and then humans, indicating the relationship between heaven, earth, and humanity.
Qi Bo said: “The sage’s measurements must correspond to heaven and earth,” meaning that a cultivated practitioner, when formulating treatment principles, must first observe the natural changes of heaven and earth. For example, heaven has its fixed degrees, which is 365 degrees, the earth has rivers, and the human body has meridians. These three are mutually influential and can be analogized. How can they be analogized? (Please follow WeChat: pengxinboshi) Next, Qi Bo began a discussion that we can summarize in four words: Heaven and Humanity Correspond. Heaven refers to the natural world, and humanity refers to the human body. He said: “When heaven is warm and earth is mild, the rivers are calm; when heaven is cold and earth is frozen, the rivers coagulate.” If the climate of heaven and earth is mild, it means the weather is very warm and gentle, and the rivers will flow calmly and steadily. If heaven is cold and earth is frozen, the rivers will stagnate and not flow, which actually describes the changes in the natural world.
Next, he said: “When heaven is hot and earth is heated, the rivers boil and overflow; when sudden winds and storms arise, the rivers surge and swell.” He stated that if the weather is extremely hot, the rivers will boil and overflow, meaning the flow of the rivers will speed up and boil. If a storm suddenly arises, the rivers will surge violently. He provided four situations: one is mild weather, one is cold and frozen earth, another is extremely hot weather, and the last is sudden storms. He presented these four examples, and then he transitioned to the topic of evil Qi, which relates to changes in the body.
He said: “When evil enters the meridians,” meaning that external evil invades the body and enters the meridians, “cold causes blood to coagulate, heat causes Qi to flow freely,” indicating that if the pathogenic evil invades the meridians, excessive cold will cause stagnation of Qi and blood. Excessive heat will make Qi and blood flow smoothly and rapidly. “When vacuous evil enters as a guest, it is like the rivers encountering wind. The movement of the meridians is also sometimes surging, sometimes calm,” meaning that when pathogenic evil invades the meridians, cold will cause stagnation of Qi and blood, while heat will make Qi and blood flow smoothly and rapidly. If vacuous evil and wind invade, it will be like rivers encountering a storm.
“It is also like the rivers encountering wind,” meaning that the fluctuations in the meridians will cause surging waves, and this situation will arise. The surging here refers to the rising, similar to the rising in the Longzhong Dui. In this case, the meridians will also exhibit a surging condition. We all know that once external evil enters the body, when we take the pulse, we will find it is a floating pulse, indicating that Qi and blood have already surged. If the pulse is rapid, the condition is severe, and the pulse count indicates heat, and this is an external condition. Some pulses are tight, some are slippery, and some are wiry; these are all different. This indicates what? The invasion of external evil.
“Its flow in the meridians is variable, sometimes large, sometimes small; when large, evil is present; when small, it is balanced; its flow is not constant,” meaning that Qi and blood also flow in the meridians, and the flow is variable. However, when we take the pulse at the cun (寸口) position, we will feel that sometimes it is large and sometimes small; large indicates the presence of pathogenic evil, also called the progression of the disease, while small indicates the retreat of pathogenic evil, meaning the disease is retreating. The flow of evil Qi does not have a fixed position, referred to as “its flow is not constant.” (To be continued)
